Review for Shattered Souls by Erica Lucke Dean

Shattered Souls by  Erica Lucke Dean

Kindle Edition, 1st, 290 pages

Publication: May 18th 2021 by Red Adept Publishing

From Goodreads…
Don’t miss the explosive conclusion to the Flames of Time trilogy.

Ava Flynn walked through flames to erase the past and bring her little brother, Josh, back from the dead. But the reboot doesn’t come without strings. While navigating her new reality, Ava must avoid Maddox... without fracturing the timeline. If she fails, she may never find Laith again.

With her own heart at stake, Ava scours time for the key to unraveling the curse binding her soul to both Laith’s and Maddox’s. One brother is the love of her life. And the other... Not even death will stop him from keeping them apart.

As Ava’s present collides with the brothers’ pasts, she discovers that breaking the curse might have unintended consequences. And this time, her soul isn’t the only one on the line.

My Thoughts… I had so much hope for Ava Flynn.  I needed her to figure out who her soul mate was and make a life with him.   Was it Maddox?  Was it Laith?   In book two we learned who was the “better” brother, but would that truly be who she ends up with?   Book three answers all my questions and let me very happy.

Ava was truly fearless.   She knew that the curse had to be broken and was willing to do whatever needed to break it.   She jumps time, she works with a witch, and she puts her own life on the line just to find her happy ending.    I really enjoyed working through the curse with her and figuring out what would need to be done to break it.  I liked the mystery of the different times and the uncertainty of what would be changed as she went through time reliving her life.

The brothers and Ava became people I was invested in.   I wanted to be sure Josh, Ava's brother, was taken care of also.   They had all lost so much throughout the years that I needed them to be okay and to find their happiness.    Erica Lucke Dean wrote the perfect final book in this series.   I will miss these characters but they will always be some of my favorites.

The Flames of Time series must be read in order.   I actually went back and read books one and two before starting book three because there was a gap of time between publishing.   That is my only complaint, Erica Lucke Dean kept me waiting for the wonderful final book in this series.   The good news for anyone who has not read the series yet is that all three books are now available, and you can read them without waiting for the next one to be released.   I highly recommend purchasing all three and devouring them just like I did.

Meet Erica Lucke Dean.. After walking away from her career as a business banker to pursue writing full-time, Erica moved from the hustle and bustle of the big city to a small tourist town in the North Georgia Mountains where she lives in a 90-year-old haunted farmhouse with her workaholic husband, her 180lb lap dog, and at least one ghost.

When she’s not busy writing or tending to her collection of crazy chickens, diabolical ducks, and a quintet of piglets, hell bent on having her for dinner, she’s either reading bad fan fiction or singing karaoke in the local pub. Much like the characters in her books, Erica is a magnet for disaster, and has been known to trip on air while walking across flat surfaces.

How she’s managed to survive this long is one of life’s great mysteries.

Review for The Break-Up Book Club by Wendy Wax

The Break-Up Book Club by  Wendy Wax

Paperback, 384 pages

Publication: May 18th 2021 by Berkley Books

Breakups, like book clubs, come in many shapes and sizes and can take us on unexpected journeys as four women discover in this funny and heartwarming exploration of friendship from the USA Today bestselling author of Ten Beach Road and My Ex-Best Friend's Wedding.

On paper, Jazmine, Judith, Erin and Sara have little in common - they're very different people leading very different lives. And yet at book club meetings in an historic carriage house turned bookstore, they bond over a shared love of reading (and more than a little wine) as well as the growing realization that their lives are not turning out like they expected.

Former tennis star Jazmine is a top sports agent balancing a career and single motherhood. Judith is an empty nester questioning her marriage and the supporting role she chose. Erin's high school sweetheart and fianc
develops a bad case of cold feet, and Sara's husband takes a job out of town saddling Sara with a difficult mother-in-law who believes her son could have done better - not exactly the roommate most women dream of.

With the help of books, laughter, and the joy of ever evolving friendships, Jazmine, Judith, Erin and Sara find the courage to navigate new and surprising chapters of their lives as they seek their own versions of happily-ever-after.

My Thoughts…A book club that gets together and talks about books, life, and anything else they can.   As the book club continues to get together it becomes more of a group of friends.   They share their lives, their dreams of the future, and their histories.  I loved seeing how close they all worked to get and how their lives intertwined as each one had their own struggles and successes.

The friendships Jazmine, Judith, Erin and Sara have are unique in that if not for the book club they may not have met.   Yet, they come together, have each other’s backs as needed, and support each other through all the ups and downs of life.   The other members of the book club have smaller roles in their lives but they also are great friends.

I really enjoyed this beach read that was not quite a fluffy book.   There was family drama, work issues, and life problems but through it all friendship won out.

I always read the prologue and/or messages from the author and the message Wendy Wax wrote had me tearing up.   I struggled to read during Covid, I cannot imagine writing a book during Covid.

About the author
I was raised in the northeastern United States, in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country, and resided in a half-dozen homes or towns throughout my growing up years. My father was a reverend with a flourishing career, moving the family to various parishes as his calling dictated, which I view in a positive light as I was exposed to different communities and lifestyles. After graduating from high school at the age of seventeen, I shook off my less worldly roots when I moved with my father to Massachusetts, a seemingly more sophisticated and progressive state. It was there that I embarked on a learning journey, thrilled at living so close to the sea in the artsy and historic fishing village of Gloucester, the hex signs and covered bridges soon a fond memory.

Thrilled to begin college in New England, I jumped in with both feet and managed to excel in biological and psychological studies, despite majoring in dating. Throughout my school years, I dabbled in poetry and short stories, purely for personal self-expression. I experimented with a couple of creative writing classes, but never pursued my secret desire of a writing career, feeling the vocation was too self-indulgent, not sensible enough for my German blood. I remained focused on psychology and received a Bachelor of Arts degree, upon which I secured my very first “real” job as a Senior Psychiatric Counselor at a group home for adults with mental illness. Wanting to further my learning, I attended Suffolk University in Beacon Hill in Boston, and graduated two years later, obtaining a Masters degree in Counseling and Human Relations.

Soon afterward, feeling weighed down by too many sunless days and frigid winters, I decided to move to a much lighter state, and settled in bustling Pinellas County in southwestern Florida. Over the next twenty years I concentrated further on my work in counseling and social services and became a licensed practitioner. During these years, my career included being a social services director for a nursing center, program manager for a rehabilitation agency, social services consultant for nursing centers, program director of an Alzheimer’s unit, and a hospice counselor.

Several years ago, due to a deep longing to express my feelings in an alternative manner, I literally sat down one day and began writing my first novel. The resultant book, The Resurrection of Hannah, (published in 2011) had been born out of a series of powerful dreams, along with compelling and coexisting experiences that inspired me to create a story that would capture the strength of my emotions. I had a yearning to shape a tale based around individuals in my life that I believed would make engaging characters. I had a strong desire to experience a higher level of creativity, to literally produce something out of nothing– a fascinating and challenging endeavor I could not ignore. It was during this time that I moved to Houston for three years, where I started a private practice as a psychotherapist and became a certified clinical hypnotherapist.

But I grew “antsy” as my father used to say and decided to move back to friends and family in Florida and worked again at the local Hospice, then more recently in community and private mental health. Once bitten by the writing bug, I could not help but pen my second work of fiction, The Fear of Things to Come, published in the summer of 2012. I am now in the process of writing another novel in what I consider a unique collection of adventure stories, the third in the Samantha Clark Mystery Series.

Review for The Girl I Used to Be by Heidi Hostetter

The Girl I Used to Be by Heidi Hostetter

Synopsis:

In her years of acting the perfect wife to Marc, Jill had built walls around herself so high that nobody could reach her. Now she has no money, nowhere to live and a future as uncertain as it was the day Marc first asked her—the shy, trusting new assistant—to lunch. Jill hadn’t known then what sort of man he really was…

When Jill Goodman’s picture-perfect marriage implodes, she’s heartbroken. Still reeling from the shock, the only thing she receives in the hasty divorce settlement is the deed to her husband’s sprawling beach house on the New Jersey shore. Overpriced, with a dark history and a crippling mortgage far outside her means to pay—the house is a symbol of everything Jill’s lost. She hates the sight of it, but knows she must face it if she’s to move on.

With no other choice, Jill travels to Dewberry Beach intending to sell the house quickly—but the task is not as easy as she expects. Still, she can’t help but be charmed by the little town’s leafy streets, sweetly old-fashioned ways and even the unexpected attentions of a handsome local with dark eyes and a teasing smile. For the first time, she can see a path back to the girl she was before she met her husband…

Then Jill dives deeper into the house’s dark past and Marc’s part in it, and she stumbles across a terrible secret that changes everything. Torn between the right choice and the easy one, Jill realizes the key lies with her ex-husband. But he would do anything to keep the truth from coming to light…

An emotionally gripping read that will keep you turning the pages late into the night, perfect for fans of Amanda Prowse, Elin Hilderbrand and Diane Chamberlain.

My Thoughts… Jillian married Marc and thought she found her prince charming.  Until his charm wore off and she learned how much of a snake he really is.    The prenup says the divorce must be done in a certain way and Marc jumps right on that before Jillian can process it all.   It ends up with Jillian just wanting her freedom, so she agrees to the terms as long as she gets the house that was mortgaged in her name without her knowledge.

I love the relationship with Jill and Ellie.  Even with Marc pushing them apart, Ellie never gives up on Jill.   When things are rough, they come together, figure out where Jill should be heading, and how she can get there.    Their friendship is strong, true, and real.

The Girl I Used to Be is a story of friendship and finding yourself.   There are wonderful characters, some you will like some you will hate.   This is a fun and quick read.

Review for Maybe We Will by Melissa Foster with a Giveaway

Embracing Her Heart (The Montgomerys Book 1) by [Foster, Melissa]
NEW RELEASE........
From Melissa Foster, the New York Times bestselling author of She Loves Me, comes a sexy and heart-warming novel about finding love—and family—where you least expect it.

When chef Abby de MessiĆ©res returns to Silver Island with her sister to get their late mother’s affairs in order, she expected to inherit her mother’s bistro along with their childhood home, not to discover a half sister they never knew existed, and a handsome vacationer camped out on her mother’s patio.

Workaholic Aiden Aldridge has been sent to Silver Island on a work-free vacation, armed with a “Let Loose list,” and ordered to get a life by the much-younger sister he raised after the death of their parents. After years of focusing on his sister’s well-being, he’s blindsided by his intense attraction to the gorgeous, free-spirited Abby.

Aiden might not know much about chilling out, but he’s excellent at striking deals. He helps Abby with the restaurant in exchange for her help in tackling the items on his list. Sparks fly as Aiden and Abby work, and play, side by side. Intimate conversations lead to steamy kisses and undeniable passion. But there’s more to Aiden than Abby knows, and when the truth comes out, their new romance is put to the test, as the two find out if true love really can conquer all.

My Thoughts… If you have not traveled to Silver Island, then you are missing out.    Silver Island is a wonderful community where the residents look out for each other, protect each other, and love each other.    Abby has returned after her mother passes away and realized that everything she was running away from is everything she wanted, including re-opening her father’s bistro.   Aiden has come to Silver Island for the first time as a forced vacation.   His “Let Loose List” from his sister has many items that he has never done but when he meets Abby, he knows that he wants to do everything on that list and more with Abby.

Aiden is an extremely wealthy man with a heart of gold while Abby is a dreamer.   Their lives should be leading such different paths that they never should cross but when they come together it is how life should be.  Their lives just make sense when they are together, they hardly know each other but after one breakfast they share their lives, dreams, and heartaches. I love Aiden’s attentiveness to Abby’s need to find her own way in life and the way he offers her help with the business knowledge he has.  Abby takes Aiden’s structured life and shows him how to let go, how to have fun again, and how to live for himself.

Melissa Foster has brought the characters and the island to life.   I want to go hang out at Silver Island.  I want to eat at Abby’s bistro.

Maybe We Should (Silver Harbor)
An emotional and sexy novel about guarded hearts, finding love, and families lost and found by Melissa Foster, the New York Times bestselling author of Maybe We Will.

After spending years wondering who she was, tattoo artist Cait Weatherby finally found her answers on the sandy shores of Silver Island. With two half sisters she never knew existed, a group of friends she adores, and a devastatingly charming admirer who flirts with her at every turn, she’s ready to figure out her next steps. The trouble is, Cait lives in the shadows of a dark past, and she can’t afford complications that might cause her to lose the family she’s only just found―complications like blue-eyed boatbuilder Brant Remington, who is as open as she is guarded. If only the sexy charmer would take the hint…

Brant is Cait’s opposite in every way, but he’s drawn to everything about the sexy newcomer―from the quiet strength that rivals the caution in her mossy-green eyes to her tough facade that he can’t wait to strip away.

As Brant works his magic, Cait’s walls come down. But as sweet as that feels, Cait knows how quickly good things can turn bad. It’s going to take more than a little trust to beat the ghosts of her past and claim the future they both deserve.
