Afraid to admit her love life is a total disaster, Meredith blurts out that she’s seriously involved with a very special man—a boatbuilder in Maine. She never expects that small slip to get spun into a story about her supposed engagement.   Or that the paparazzi will track the guy down…   Derrick Albright is laid-back about many things. Being hounded by the press about some imaginary engagement to a woman he’s only met once—and couldn’t stand—isn’t one of them. Then Meredith actually shows up at his cabin in Blue Hill, Maine, with an apology, a pot roast, and a proposal—play along until she secures her TV deal, and she’ll help him win back his ex.   It’s a simple plan, but if they have any chance of pulling it off, they’ll have to survive each other first...   Each book in the Blue Hill Brides series is STANDALONE: * The Duplicate Bride * The Matchmaker Bride

Exclusive Excerpt:

Derrick had just finished making coffee when he heard a car door pop open. He set his mug down on the counter and scowled. Another reporter? Really? It had only been a couple hours since the last round had come through, though he’d been smart enough not to answer the door and eventually they left. Instead of fielding questions he had no answers to, he’d been busy googling Meredith, trying to track down her phone number. As soon as he got rid of whoever the straggler was, he’d give in and call Brent. Maybe his wife, Hope, would be able to get him Meredith’s number. He intended to call and demand some answers. What had the infuriating woman said? Or maybe it hadn’t been her at all? Maybe one of her unhinged fans had started this rumor. But how did he get roped into it? He yanked open his front door, prepared to do battle with the paparazzi. Then he froze at the sight of that cobalt blue convertible. Meredith Galanes stepped out onto his gravel drive and his heart lurched. He’d had to put up with the woman for an entire week during Brent’s wedding last summer, and had hoped to never see her again. Yet, here she was, up close and personal, teetering in his direction in towering sandals and a flouncy dress, with her long dark curls bouncing behind her. She held a large Crock-Pot in her hands, which she grasped with oven mitts. For an instant, it was hard to believe he was really seeing her and this wasn’t some kind of weird dream. About Meredith? Not a chance. “I can explain!” she said, traipsing toward his cabin. This he had to hear. “Can’t wait.” She approached his covered stoop, her spindly heels clack-clack-clacking against the flagstones hedged by flowering bushes. This was no dream. It was her, all right. In the flesh. And smelling like honeysuckle at the height of summer. Despite himself, he’d never forgotten her perfume, or, well... pretty much anything about her. “Want to tell me what’s going on?” She stared up at him with big, dark brown eyes and Derrick’s heart slammed against his chest. “It was a simple mistake.” “Simple? Your publicity posse was here not more than an hour ago.” “Ah, um...yeah. About that.” She peered over his shoulder and into his empty living room. “Can we talk inside?” “What are you even doing in Blue Hill?” he asked, not budging. She smiled and shot him a flirty grin. “I came here to surprise you.” Consider him surprised. And more than a little ticked off. What kind of nerve the woman had. “You’re not the first one today.” She winced. “I heard.” “And?” She shoved her Crock-Pot under his nose in a peace offering. A delectable aroma wafted toward him. For the love of all things edible, it smelled just like a pot roast. A very delicious pot roast. Derrick hadn’t enjoyed a homecooked meal in months. She pressed forward into his cabin and he inched back. “Hungry?” “No.” Derrick’s stomach betrayed him with a rumble. “Uh-huh. I brought this for dinner.” Dinner? What? “No, no, no...” he said. “You are no way—no how—staying—” But, before he could finish, she used one of her shoes as a lever and kicked the door shut.

Review for Three Words for Goodbye by Hazel Gaynor, Heather Webb

Three Words for Goodbye by Hazel Gaynor, Heather Webb

Paperback, 400 pages

Publication: July 27th 2021 by William Morrow Paperbacks

Genre:  Historical Fiction, WWII

From Goodreads:  From Hazel Gaynor and Heather Webb, the bestselling authors of Meet Me in Monaco, comes a coming-of-age novel set in pre-WWII Europe, perfect for fans of Jennifer Robson, Beatriz Williams, and Kate Quinn.

Three cities, two sisters, one chance to correct the past . . .

New York, 1937: When estranged sisters Clara and Madeleine Sommers learn their grandmother is dying, they agree to fulfill her last wish: to travel across Europe—together. They are to deliver three letters, in which Violet will say goodbye to those she hasn’t seen since traveling to Europe forty years earlier; a journey inspired by famed reporter, Nellie Bly.

Clara, ever-dutiful, sees the trip as an inconvenient detour before her wedding to millionaire Charles Hancock, but it’s also a chance to embrace her love of art. Budding journalist Madeleine relishes the opportunity to develop her ambitions to report on the growing threat of Hitler’s Nazi party and Mussolini’s control in Italy.

Constantly at odds with each other as they explore the luxurious Queen Mary, the Orient Express, and the sights of Paris and  Venice,, Clara and Madeleine wonder if they can fulfil Violet’s wish, until a shocking truth about their family brings them closer together. But as they reach Vienna to deliver the final letter, old grudges threaten their reconciliation again. As political tensions rise, and Europe feels increasingly volatile, the pair are glad to head home on the Hindenburg, where fate will play its hand in the final stage of their journey.

My Thoughts:  Three Words for Goodbye is a story set in Europe pre–World War 2.  The look at the world as it seems unaware of the war that is heading for them was interesting but also scary.  While there was talk of Hitler and his army, it was mostly about two estranged sisters who vow to carry out their dying aunts last wishes.  In doing so they get the extraordinary opportunity to visit three historic cities and learn about the aunt’s life before she was their aunt.

The relationship between Clara and Madeleine was tough.  They did not see eye to eye on anything except that they had to follow Violet’s plan and fulfill her wishes.   In their traveling they meet interesting people, see amazing places but most of all they learn to rely on each other.  They see things that they will never forget while making memories to last a lifetime.

This is a historical fiction story, but it had many twists.   There were unexpected discoveries, secrets revealed, pasts forgiven but not forgotten, and families reacquainted.  I loved every word in this book.   The descriptions of the people, locations, and surroundings brought the story to life while the emotions and reactions of the characters made them real.   I was unable to put the book down and recommend picking up your own copy and losing yourself in the travels of two sisters, following their aunts last wishes.

**Thank you, Heather Webb, and NetGalley for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

Arriving back at her home estate, the first thing Rose does is visit her stepsister Sarah’s grave, taking her younger sister, Maggie, along. After a forced retreat at the cousins', Rose looks forward to some normalcy and a return to routine. Not to mention the unexpected upcoming ball hosted by their elusive neighbors to introduce their son Henry, who has been away. Perhaps this mysterious Henry may become interested in Rose. Or most likely he would become her younger sister's fourth suitor and Rose would endure more “old maid” banter.

With the oppressive heat and unpredictable weather, Rose and Maggie are caught in a sudden severe thunderstorm. Maggie makes it back before the sky unleashes its fury, but Rose is caught behind. She really doesn’t mind, however, because she loves the rain and the wind and the gardens and could stay outside their stuffy mansion forever. Away from the wardrobe.

In the midst of the storm, Rose is cut by a briar and becomes caught in the mud. She sees a woman on their front porch. ๐˜”๐˜ข๐˜จ๐˜จ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ?

“Help me, Maggie!” But the woman is gone.

“As he makes clear through his lively prose,… Chris utilizes a series of vignettes to provide, in a self-effacing style, very thoughtful examples of how hard work, coupled with solid personal, family, community, and business values, are the basis from which strong managers and entrepreneurs can succeed… Chris not only tells some wonderful stories, but for many of us, he brings back some long lost memories.” – Jeff Glajch, Chief Financial Officer, Graham Corporation (from the Foreword)

Scenes from an Italian Entreprenuer

Even the simplest of life’s activities can build the most enduring memories. More important, in subtle ways they can offer lessons that stand a lifetime. When fully absorbed, these lessons can yield powerful results. In his book One Up On Wall Street, Fidelity’s superstar investor Peter Lynch explains how everyday investors can profit just by paying attention to the companies in their own backyard. Similarly, it is these same “backyard” (and sometime front yard) experiences of our youth that provide the lessons needed to reach the highest of heights in the business world. Much has been written of the proverbial lemonade stand and how it teaches budding entrepreneurs the meaning of business. This book takes place in the real-life world of a small family-owned and operated pizza stand in one of America’s most popular and prosperous annual fairs – the Erie County Fair – and follows through the events that led a young adult to learn invaluable lessons that, in the future, would help him become a successful entrepreneur.

Chris Carosa takes a series of mundane, everyday events not unlike what many experienced growing up – if they grew up working in their grandparents’ pizza stand at the Erie County Fair! What’s amazing is he takes these vignettes of his life as a Carney and connects the dots to come up with more than a dozen general rules – told through 54 specific lessons – he’s followed in all his entrepreneurial ventures. Mr. Carosa tells these stories through the same conversational and, at times, self-effacing style his readers have become familiar with.

Among the 54 Fascinating Lessons, You’ll Discover:

  • The Four Fundamental Basics of a Winning Business
  • What Always Comes First (despite what you might think!)
  • The Only Color that Matters
  • Why the Odds are Never in Your Favor (and how to change that)
  • What You Must Do if You Really Want Something
  • The Two Secrets of Making Memorable Presentations
  • How Exactly the Peloponnesian War Ties Into a Pizza Stand at the Erie County Fair
  • The One Concept All Successful Businesses Must Embrace
  • The Six Rules of a Good Carney
  • The Relationship Between Good Marketing and Good Engineering
  • If You Loved the Peloponnesian War Reference, You’ll Treasure the Thermopylae Metaphor
  • Why You Must Have a Plan C
  • And, Finally, Why You Must Always Think Outside the Pizza Box!

About Christopher Carosa
Christopher Carosa was born on the third floor of Mercy Hospital in Buffalo, New York on a hot summer morning in mid-July, 1960. Barely a Kindergartner, he and his younger brother produced a daily newspaper (for just one day, and mainly as an excuse to type on their mother's vintage typewriter). He conducted his first public reading in first grade at the age of six, where he read a story he wrote about "Herbie the Helicopter" (sort of like "the little train that could" except with rotors instead of wheels).

Later, as a teenage rebel who detested all things literature and English class, he once joined with a small band of classmates in tenth grade who refused a class assignment to read a novel and write an analysis of it. The teacher gave each of the renegade students a stern choice: "either do the assignment or write your own novel." While all his friends bowed to their instructor and did the assignment, Mr. Carosa held firm. He wrote his first novel "Armageddon" (a geo-political sci-fi epic set in the not-so-distant future). His teacher gave him an "A" and went so far as to suggest the budding scientist might have a dual career as a writer a la Isaac Asimov.

The young Carosa laughed at the suggestion, but remained a closet author, coming out rarely and when it was least expected. He agreed to serve as treasurer of his high school literary magazine Equinox, but only if the editors agreed to publish his sophomoric send-up of Star Trek. They reluctantly acceded to his demands. He went on to oversee a then record-breaking sale of the flimsy carbon-copy annual, mostly by offering to personally autograph every copy sold ("You never know," he told unsuspecting buyers, "I might be famous some day.")

Despite his best efforts, such as organizing a union of AP English Students (U.A.P.E.S.) and leading a "strike" where the entire class skipped one day, he passed his English classes. He found his antics fared no better in college, where his mocking essays failed to incite the professor, who instead enjoyed them for their "change of pace."

Now a full-fledged adult, Carosa began writing in earnest the last few weeks of his college career. With hours of computer time left in his account and his senior thesis complete, he spent his remaining time using an archaic word processor to create entertaining tidbits for his friends.

And that was it.

The author within him went into hiding. He still wrote, but no one knew. He accumulated pages and pages, then floppy disks and floppy disks and then finally hard drives full of creative content. Some of it will never see the light of day (and probably shouldn't). Some of it you see here and will continue to see.

Audiobook Review for Hot For Love by Melissa Foster

Publisher's Summary

Discover the magic of New York Times best seller Melissa Foster's stories and see why millions of fans have fallen in love with the fiercely loyal and sassily sexy characters in the Love-in-Bloom big-family romance families.

All Love in Bloom books can be enjoyed as stand-alone novels or as part of the larger series.

Trixie Jericho is on a mission to start her own miniature horse business. She’s sick of being told her idea is cute and wants nothing more than to be taken seriously. When rancher and sought-after freestyle-horse-trainer Nick Braden offers an opportunity she can’t refuse, Trixie jumps on it. The problem is she also wants to jump on him, but the bullheaded, big-muscled, motorcycle-riding cowboy doesn't mix business with pleasure. Little does he know, Trixie has never backed down from a challenge, especially one she wants more than her next breath. Saddle up, big boy, because this boot-stompin’, risk-taking, Daisy Duke-wearing cowgirl isn’t afraid to play dirty.

Love-in-Bloom novels feature alpha-male heroes and smart, empowered women. They're flawed, funny, passionate, and relatable to listeners who enjoy contemporary romance and women's fiction.

My Thoughts…

Audiobook Review:  Savannah Peachwood and Aiden Snow are phenomenal narrators.    They took the feisty, strong-willed Trixie and brought her spirit to life with their voices.   The tough, alpha male Nick was made real through the tone and emotions of the narrator's voices.   I had already read Melissa Foster's written version of Hot for Love.   I thought I had a good understanding of their relationship but hearing the words gave me such a better understanding of Trixie and Nick.   I love hearing their emotions and their feelings, the characters are brought to life as I listen.

eBook Review: Trixie Jericho is a spitfire.   Growing up with only brothers she has always had to prove herself.   Prove that she can keep up with the boys, prove that she can handle herself, and prove that she can follow her own dreams.    Nick Braden, sigh, has offered Trixie his house as a home base for the next month to figure out what it will take to start her own miniature horse business.   He has no doubt it will be hard to share his house with Trixie since he has been attracted to her and has had feelings for her forever.

I just have to say that I love, love, love these two together.   They challenge each other, they push each other, and the trust each other.   Nick pushes Trixie to start her business, purchase her horses, and make her dreams come true.   Trixie pushes Nick to let people in, open up about his past, and to let her in.   Both knew that they needed to find their happy ever after and knew that that happiness was dependent on them being together.

Their fights, their making up, and the loving was always exactly right.    Neither lost their spunk by being together.   They both stood their ground, opened their hearts, and fell into each other.

Exclusive Excerpt:

Elyse woke with the arm of the Captain around her waist, his hand resting on the curve of her hip. Her head laid on his chest. She made a sound that was more of a kitten’s mew. Elijah looked down into her face. “Good morning, brat.” Elyse’s sleep-fogged brain couldn’t comprehend his sarcasm, so she snuggled closer to his chest and sighed her contentment. Elyse’s eyes flew open when she realized her head lay on his chest and her proximity to him. She sat up, her hands splayed on the ground, and she stared into his gorgeous brown eyes. My breath. Her hand flew up to cover her mouth. “I think I need a toothbrush,” she said. ~*~*~ He was stunned into silence as his eyes roamed her face, her tousled hair, loosened from her bun as she had slept, fell in soft waves to curl around the curves of her breast and hips. The cleavage she unknowingly displayed, and that delightful tiny mole on the top of her left breast. Her eyes, Purple? No, amethyst. Porcelain skin and pink pouty lips. He had never seen a more beautiful woman, and he shook his head to clear his thoughts. Focus man, focus. He leaned over and grabbed his rucksack. Opening a side pouch, he pulled out a spare toothbrush still wrapped in clear plastic and handed it to her. “I guess I came prepared.” He handed her his canteen. “It’s Kool-aid.” “You brush your teeth with Kool-aid?” she asked incredulously. He gave a wry grin. “Not just any Kool-aid, grape Kool-aid. Fresh water when we can find it can be nasty. This covers the taste of the iodine pills we use to sanitize the water.” He picked her bobby pins off his chest and the ground next to him and handed them to her. “You have ten minutes then we move out.”   “Seven men were ready within ten minutes. You took twice as long.” The Captain stated as she moved to pass him on the path. “Girl. I had to brush my teeth, wash my face. Thank God Mountain had water. I had to fix my hair and eat another nasty C-ration. I thought I did pretty well.” He grunted, rolling his eyes in response.

When I pull up to Tara’s home, I’m both displeased and impressed. On one hand, It’s a big beautiful white farmhouse with a wraparound porch. It looks timeless and unique. Much like Tara herself. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn she picked this home for herself. But it’s very far off the road and isolated on about twenty acres of farmland. A single mother and her kids shouldn’t be out here all by themselves. And tonight, she’s solo. If she caught me checking on her, there’s no way I could play it cool like I was in the neighborhood.

There is no neighborhood.

By the time I gradually drive up her private gravel road, I’m soaked to the core. As I get closer, I can barely make out anything in front of me, but I see her slight frame sitting on the steps with her head in her hands. She’s sitting on a porch in the eye of an oncoming storm. My bike has a loud purr, but she doesn’t even look up.

Her environmental awareness is shit. We’ll have to work on that.

I turn off the engine and hit the kickstand. Taking my helmet off, I approach. She’s shuddering…crying.

Only when I call her name does she look up.

“Tara, what’s wrong?” I force myself to calm down; I can’t spook her.

When she looks at me and I’m not prepared for what I see. I expected shock and even some anger. I thought she might wonder how the hell I got to her home. I thought she’d accuse me of stalking her and order me away. Instead, she looks wrecked. Her eyes are weak from crying. Her beautiful skin is red, raw from her tears. And her lips are trembling. The entire scene is a knife straight to my heart.

“What happened,” I growl, losing tolerance for this entire scene.

She sniffles. “Jason… he… he…” That’s as far as she gets before her body crumbles into itself, tormented with fresh tears. I get out of the rain and join her on the porch. Sitting next to her, I pull her into my arms. She crawls into my lap and sobs on my chest for a good five minutes. I stroke her hair and soothe her with firm circles to her back, placing soft kisses in her wet hair.

“Shh Angel. It’s going to be alright. No one is going to hurt you. But you’ve got to tell me what happened. Did Jason hurt you? Can we go inside and talk about it?”

She lifts and looks at me with a defeated gaze. “

No. That’s just it. I can’t get inside. Jason had the locks changed while I was at work tonight. I can’t even get into my house!”

The tree branches are swaying, and the wind grows fierce. We have to get out of here soon.

“Angel, listen to me. You can tell me all the details later, and I promise I will help you get back into your house. But this storm is picking up and no locksmith will come by in this weather tonight. Is there anywhere I can take you? You need shelter. What about your mother’s? or Symone’s?”

She grabs on to my leather cut with a frantic look. “No! Please. It’s too embarrassing. My mother has enough to deal with, she doesn’t need to know I’m homeless too. At least not tonight. And I don’t want the kids to find out. Symone and Rhue have done so much for me already. I just can’t ask them for another thing.”

Her pride is admirable, but silly given the circumstances.

“Then come home with me.” I say it on impulse, but I’m certain it’s what I want.

“What?! No, I can’t impose. That wouldn’t be proper.”

I chuckle. “Angel, if we don’t get inside soon, this storm will scatter our proper bodies across the marsh. It is going to be a level two within the hour. I have a four-bedroom home on Kiawah. You will have your own room and bed, and you can take tonight to think through your options and rest. I promise you my intentions are honorable.”

She looks at me for a long moment with a partially opened mouth and I’m sure she’ll say no. But then she closes it to bite her bottom lip and my dick rouses to attention.

Down, boy.

I can’t touch her. She doesn’t need that right now. Finally, she purses her lips in a little determined grimace and nods yes. “Ok, Cameron. Thank you.”

I smile. “Great. But we can’t ride my bike in this weather. I was taking a chance driving it over here, but that’s a chance I was taking on myself alone. Can we take your truck?”

She stands and sticks out her hand to help me up. I laugh at the gesture. She’s sweet, but I have at least 100 pounds on her. Still, I take her hand.

“You can park your bike here. No one should bother with it.” She looks down at the floor of her porch and crosses her arms in front of her. “I’m so sorry Cameron, this is crazy. Are you sure it’s OK for me to impose on you like this? I can get a hotel room or something. I was so shocked, I kind of just fell and landed here.”

I pinch her chin and raise her eyes to mine.

“Tara, you are never an imposition. You are a privilege. How often does one get to host an angel?”

She finally smiles, and I pull her in close to whisper alongside the shell of her ear.

“I’m going to take excellent care of you, for as long as you allow it. Let’s Go.”

We turn toward the car and dash out into the storm, hand in hand.

Hopefully, by tomorrow all will be clear.

Cover Reveal for All I Want for Christmas by S.L. Sterling

Title: All I Want for Christmas: A Contemporary Romance Holiday Collection
Author: S.L. Sterling
Genre: Contemporary Romance (Holiday)
Release Date: September 10, 2021
Cover Design: Thunderstruck Cover Design

From USA Today Bestselling Author S.L. Sterling comes this collection of slow-burn holiday romances guaranteed to warm your heart on a cold winter's night.

Included in the Collection is On A Silent Night, Back to You this Christmas and Fireside Love.

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart...

Five years ago, I lost my best friend. The last words he ever spoke to me were a plea to look out for his wife. I never meant to fall in love with her. I even ran from my feelings. Not that it did any good. Three years later, I still can't get her out of my mind. Now, I’m going to try to win her back.
Hopefully, I’m not on Santa’s naughty list because it will take a Christmas miracle to win her back.

After Jackson died, I didn’t expect to find love again. Still, things with Brody just felt... right. Which made it that much more confusing when he left with no explanation. Since then, I’ve worked on rebuilding my life. I started fresh in a new town, and even have a new man in my life. All of which complicates things when Brody shows up in search of a second chance.
Hang the mistletoe and string the lights, he’s going to need more than a jolly ole elf for me to consider re-gifting him my heart.

This Christmas, all I wanted was to wallow in self-pity until the woman I thought was the love of my life could explain why she left me at the altar. Instead, my buddy, Zach forced holiday merriment on me. I thought it was going to be a tinsel-laced nightmare... until his sister, Alexa, showed up. Turns out, she grew up into a gorgeous present I was insanely tempted to unwrap. Lucky for me, she shared my desire to meet under the metaphorical mistletoe... and let things heat up from there.

For the first time in months, Laura, my ex, wasn’t haunting my thoughts like the Ghost of Christmas Past. Which, of course, is exactly why she had to pick that moment to call and say she wanted to talk. I could only hope St. Nick had a playbook in his sleigh because things were about to get complicated.

I hated my job. I had no social life.
Somehow I had become so predictable after my last relationship ended, that the cashier at the local food mart already had my favorite wine bagged and waiting for me behind the counter when I walked in on Friday afternoon.
I needed to get away, from everything.
So when my best friend, Addie, called up and offered me a FREE weekend getaway, how could I say no.
Promises of a quiet weekend with a good book, warm fires, and flannel pajamas? Yes, please!

It had been eighteen months.
Eighteen months, since I had lost my wife in a car accident and learned that our marriage had been nothing but one big lie.
I’d done nothing but work and mope around my sister’s house, so when she told me to take her cabin for the weekend. Time alone, surrounded by nature and the fresh cold mountain air was exactly what I’d been needing.
However, my plans of being alone in the wilderness quickly vanished when I walked through the doors of the cabin and found my sister’s best friend drunk and half-naked on the floor of the very same cabin.
I’d hidden my crush on her for years. Perhaps, not well enough. After all, Addie must have set this up.
The weekend was about to get a lot more interesting.
