New Release from Fallon Raynes, Author of Temptress

Title: Temptress
Author: Fallon Raynes
Genre: Action Thriller
Release Date: December 24, 2021

Temptress is a short story originally featured in the best seller: Make Them Pay - A Thriller Anthology.

When local bars become the hot target for thieves, Detective Reyes is reminded that temptation comes in many forms.

Kent, Grady, and Red have the bait and switch routine down to a science. Although, Red is the newest member to the tiny crew, she's the biggest weapon in their arsenal. She's hot as sin and the poster child of distractions. Kent and Grady knew she was going to help them pilfer all the dive-bars in the town they'd set their sights on. It would be easy money with her in the spotlight.

There was just one small problem. They hit Lucky's bar first. A bar that was owned by the father-figure of Detective Reyes, of the Midland Law Enforcement Center.

Detective Ricky Reyes is on the hunt to catch the thieves that stole what wasn't theirs. Will he catch the band of thieves before they skip town? Will justice be served?

Chapter 1

A vision in a red dress and spiky, black heels fluttered into the bar. Her short, flared skirt danced at her long legs from the rush of the evening breeze coming through the open door. She brushed a strand of flame-red hair behind her ear. The door closed, darkening the room. The lady in red stood there at the entrance as she searched the dimly lit surroundings. Behind the bar was Frank, the owner of the outdated bar called Lucky’s. He stood frozen with his gaze on the woman, his mouth agape.

Grady smirked, thinking the guy’s sad old eyes had probably never seen the likes of this gal. His gal, in fact, and aptly nicknamed “Red,” her favorite color.

Finally, she found what she was searching for—or more accurately, whom. Grady grinned and made a “tipping of the hat” motion. Red’s full lips turned up in a smile as she sashayed over to him. He held out his arms, and she threw herself into his embrace. Her skirt twirled up as he swung her around a few times before setting her down for a kiss. He sucked in a deep breath of air and tasted her sweet perfume. He looked around, noticing the patrons at the bar and pool table were just as enthralled with them as he had hoped they would be.

She pulled herself away and blushed demurely. Ah, she’s good, Grady thought. He steadied her and offered the chair next to the pool table. The sharp smacking of the balls resumed. He smirked, winked, and then headed to the bar to get her a drink and refill his whiskey.

When he returned, he gave her another quick wink as he set an icy mug of beer in front of her. She took a quick sip and seductively licked the foam off her lips. He had to admit, Red was hard to ignore. And that was exactly what they wanted.

Her grand entrance had actually worked. No one had seen Kent come in and slip to the back office. Their plan was in motion. When her knees started to bounce slightly—a hint that she was getting anxious—Grady pushed down on them gently. He took his thumb and started tracing circles on the fair skin of her inner thigh.

He nodded slightly toward the bar, and she casually turned to look in that direction. The bartender’s eyes locked with hers, and she ran her tongue along her top lip while Grady’s hand wandered up her skirt. She was definitely the main attraction this evening. Grady continued the play, stroking the inside of her leg with his rough hand. His phone buzzed in his pocket—once, then two more times.

That was the signal. Show time. Grady slid Red’s chair closer to him, put his arm around her back, hand on her shoulder. He lightly squeezed three times to relay the message. Red stiffened, and he looked directly into those green eyes and gave her a smile of assurance. Everything will be fine.

EXCERPT:

Cade flinched at the sound of her bedroom door slamming. He leaned his shoulder against the side of the house and let out a sigh. “I don’t get it. What did I say?”

Nora put a hand on his arm. “Nothing. She’s a teenager, so her moods are going to be all over the place.”

“But I thought things were going so well. She was even laughing at lunch.”

“Which might be part of the problem. Remember, she just lost her mom and has been uprooted to this new place. She might feel guilty for having fun or for enjoying this farm—like if she starts to like you and Bryn too much, that it will be a betrayal to her mom.”

“You might be right.” He offered her a smile. “What’s that advice gonna cost me?”

She grinned up at him. “One baked ziti dinner.”

“Done. I’ll even throw in a slice of pie.” He tried to laugh, but the anguish of the situation was getting to him, and he dropped his chin to his chest. “Ya know, I consider myself a pretty tough guy, but this parenting stuff is rough.”

Nora took a step toward him. “I have to warn you that I’m a hugger by nature, and it’s killing me not to be able to offer you a hug. Like I’m totally comin’ in hot right now, so if you don’t want to be smothered in a hug, you need to stop me now.”

The idea of wrapping his arms around Nora had emotions burning his throat. Which was weird since his feelings toward women weren’t generally led by his heart. But something about this woman, with her sunny attitude and her giving nature was getting to him. He opened his arms, and she stepped into them and wrapped herself around him.

He let out his breath as she sunk into him, and he bent his head and buried his face in her hair. “You feel good,” he whispered, then cleared his throat. “I mean this feels good.”

“So do you,” she murmured into his chest.

She pulled back, but he wasn’t ready to let her go and kept his arms circled around her waist. She looked up at from under long eyelashes, and he couldn’t tear his eyes away.

There was something here. He knew it, and he was sure she did too. The electricity between them was almost visible as if it shimmered in the air. They’d been teasing and flirting and touching the last few days, but this felt different. This was more than playful flirtation.

He dropped his gaze to her mouth and wanted to groan. Her lips were plump and parted, as if just begging to be kissed.

He leaned down and softly grazed her lips with his—not quite a kiss but enough to feel the soft catch of her breath and the delicious enticement of her mouth.

“What’s this going to cost me?” he whispered, but he already knew the answer.

It was going to cost him everything.

Blurb:

"You got married on your divorce-cation?"

That would unfortunately be correct.

I was hanging with the girls, celebrating my divorce when I saw him, my crush, sitting in the corner of the bar all alone. Being single and looking for a wild night, I asked him if he wanted to join me. To my delight, he said yes.

Drinks were consumed, fun was had and then . . . one drunken conversation with a cranky gondolier in Las Vegas led to an Uber lift through a drive-thru wedding chapel with the incredibly hot, British bad boy, Pike Greyson.

On paper, it seemed like I hit the jackpot. And if I wasn't fresh from a toxic marriage, I would have absolutely noticed the finer things about him.

But I wanted nothing to do with being married, so when I arrived back home from my eventful weekend in Vegas, the last thing I expected to see was a new doting husband already moved in.

I asked for an annulment, he pulled a Ross Geller and said no.

That's right, he said NO! Instead, he asked for three months to prove we could be good together.

Insanity clearly knocked him in the head and the only way I could convince him to give up on our sham of a marriage was to show him just how wrong we were for each other. Only problem with that was, he saw right through my every prank, every trick, and every yearning emotion I attempted to mask.

When a New York supermodel and a Texas cowboy tangle, expect fireworks in this exciting enemies to lovers romance.

Soul-sick and exhausted, supermodel Sadie Stewart comes to her best friend’s cattle ranch to heal. What she doesn’t count on is the way Jessica’s brother Knox makes her heart pound with his broad shoulders and sexy hips. But the man’s tough guy routine and comments about city girls get on her last nerve.

Knox McKinnis can’t believe that he has to put up with a smart aleck New York city slicker for the rest of the summer. Couldn’t his sister have asked before inviting the irritating but admittedly gorgeous yankee into their house?

When school teacher Jessica is called away to a three-week training, she asks Knox to step in and shoulder some responsibility for her guest. What begins as an onerous chore turns into a budding friendship.

When their friendship grows into something much more, the two lovers are faced with the immutable truth: Sadie’s multi-million-dollar career is in New York City. Knox’s life is embedded in his family ranch.

With September comes Sadie’s commitment at the Spring Fashion Show in New York. Heartbroken, the lovers say goodbye with no plans to see each other again.

But when tragedy strikes, Knox isn’t about to honor their agreement. Will the two find a way to be together or is their situation still as hopeless as before?

Knox McKinnis removed the halter from his big bay gelding and swatted him on the rump. The horse trotted off into the wheat pasture, seemingly unaffected by the long day sorting cattle on the 11,200-acre McKinnis ranch near the tiny town of Rule in north Texas. So close to west Texas that it shared the wild, desert landscape, the McKinnis property had its share of mesquite trees and prickly pear cactus. But the hardy natural grasses grew healthy white-tailed deer for the hunters that the ranch hosted each year and robust Black Angus cattle that were his father’s pride.

After returning the halter to the big metal barn, he paused before entering the ranch house. Jessica’s SUV was parked out front, which meant that his sister was back from the airport in Abilene. Should he head into Haskell for dinner? Meeting some stranger from New York wasn’t high on his list after a hard day in the saddle. But what he really wanted was a shower and to hit the sack early. Better go in and get it over with.

As soon as he entered the big kitchen where everyone was already seated at the table, he locked eyes with Jessica’s friend. Gritting his teeth, he steeled himself to show no reaction at her revealing outfit, a lime-green satin jacket over a black crocheted top with holes easily two inches wide. Her tiny beige bra showed clearly underneath it. Was that what passed for acceptable fashion in New York? He slid his glance away and headed to the sink to wash his hands.

When he took his seat at the table, Jessica spoke up. “Hey, brother, I’d like you to meet my friend, Sadie Stewart. Sadie, this is my big brother, Knox.”

Keeping his face neutral out of respect for his baby sister, he nodded. “Pleased to meet you, ma’am.”

Sadie raised her eyebrows. “I’m only twenty-six. Am I a ma’am already?”

He didn’t look at her, instead serving himself a steak. “In Texas, all women are ma’am.”

“Well, isn’t that nice.”

But she didn’t sound like she thought it was nice. She sounded condescending. Who did she think she was? He served himself from the rest of the dishes without comment, already taking a healthy dislike to the Northerner. He took a bite of his fried potatoes and noticed that she only had a plate of salad in front of her. What the hell? Was she too good for his family’s country food? He glanced up and noticed Jessica watching him.

“Sadie’s a vegetarian,” she said.

He stifled a groan. Of course she was. He didn’t acknowledge his sister’s comment, merely took a bite of green beans.

“Don’t they have good Black Angus steaks in New York, Sadie?” his dad asked.

Sadie smiled. “I’m sure they do, Jeb. I just don’t eat them.”

“No wonder you’re so skinny. A person could get sickly going without good beef,” his father replied with a smile.

She obviously didn’t take his comment personally because she returned his dad’s smile. “I get plenty of protein, Jeb, I just don’t eat animals in the process.”

Knox restrained himself from rolling his eyes. He took a quick bite of potatoes. This city-slicker was going to get on his nerves every time she opened her mouth, and the sooner he left the table the better.

Maddie, Knox’s mom, and always the peacemaker in the house, spoke up. “To each his own, I say. Sadie, I have to get groceries in Abilene this week. Why don’t you come with me and we’ll make sure you have plenty of meal choices from now on, okay?”

“That sounds wonderful, Maddie. Thank you.” She looked genuinely appreciative, and this appeased Knox some. But still. A vegetarian? Come on.

“So, how was your flight, Sadie?” his mother asked.

“It was fine. I guess I do so much of it that I don’t pay much attention to flying anymore. The only thing that got my pulse racing was a tight time frame for my plane switch in Dallas. The little commuter I took to Abilene wasn’t crowded, though, so that was nice.”

“Well, we’re sure glad you got here safely,” his mom replied.

“It’s great to be here, Maddie. Thanks so much for having me. This is a beautiful place. I’ve heard so much about Texas, and I can’t wait to see a real working cattle ranch.”

He pressed his lips together. Damn. That didn’t sound good. Did Jessica have plans for the two of them to follow him around?

“Sadie and I’ll do the cleanup after dinner, mom,” Jessica offered.

Sadie’s head bobbed up, and her eyes widened in surprise.

He grimaced. What? Was she too good to do some dishes?

“Um, do you have gloves?” Sadie asked.

“I don’t think so, but we can get some. You can dry tonight,” his sister answered.

Sadie smiled. “That sounds perfect.”

Well, he had to give it to her. She’d taken that in stride. Maybe there was more to the woman than met the eyes. He finished the last of his food and went to the sink to rinse off his plate.

“It was nice meeting you, Knox.”

He put his plate in the dishwasher before replying. “Welcome to the McKinnis Ranch, Miss Stewart.”

“Oh, call me Sadie, please.”

He nodded. “Good evening, Sadie.” He strode from the room, wondering just how long the strange woman from New York City would be staying.
