BLOG POST for A Laughing Matter of Pain by Cynthia Hilston

A Laughing Matter of Pain

Harry Rechthart always knew how to laugh, but laughter can hide a lot of pain that’s drowned by the bottle and good times. He grew up the joker in the early 1900s in Cleveland, Ohio, but as he enters adulthood, conflict splits him. His once close relationship with his brother, Erik, breaks as they come into their own and Erik goes off to college. No longer under Erik’s shadow, Harry feels he might finally shine and make others see him as someone to be proud of. Harry finds an unlikely comrade who understands how he feels–his younger sister, Hannah. Once free of high school, Harry and Hannah double date sister and brother, Kat and Will Jones, attending wild, extravagant parties during the years of Prohibition. Harry thinks he’s won at life–he’s found love in Kat, in a good time, and in the bottle. But all the light goes out fast when Harry’s alcoholism leads to disastrous consequences for him and Kat.

Harry thinks the joke’s on him now that he’s sunk lower than ever. He’s in jail. He’s pushed away his family. He’s a broken man, but in the darkest depths of a prison cell, there is hope. Can Harry rebuild his life and learn that true laughter comes from knowing true joy, or will he bury himself once and for all in this laughing matter of pain?

REVIEW & BLOG POST for Dirty Rich Betrayal by Lisa Renee Jones

A DEVASTATINGLY SEXY AND EMOTIONAL SECOND-CHANCE STANDALONE ROMANCE.

Grayson Bennett.

He's a billionaire, a lawyer, the king of the world to some. A professed lifelong bachelor. A man who took his father's business and fortune and turned marginal success into an empire. Now someone is threatening that empire and he's going to burn them to the ground. But he'll need the help of one person. He'll need her.

That woman is Mia Cavanaugh, criminal attorney, ex-lover, a woman who believes he betrayed her, a woman who could burn him to the ground, but she won't. Because she loves him. Because he loves her, and it's time that she sees the truth of the past.

Now, he's handing her the key to his future. He's giving her the chance to burn him to the ground. He's letting her see the real man beneath the surface that not even she's seen in the past. She has to decide what to do with that man. Love him or destroy him.

My Thoughts…

Dirty Rich Betrayal is the fourth book in this series, which I have not read the first 3 of, but I jumped in and didn’t miss a beat.     Grayson is entirely alpha male.   He is wealthy, he is in charged, and he protects those who mean the most to him which includes Mia.    Mia is everything to him and his biggest rival is out to take him down using her.

I devoured Grayson and Mia’s story.    While some of the scenes make me blush and the language used isn’t my style I couldn’t put the book down when it came to the drama of the take down, the heat of their love, and the unending devotion to each other.      They are a couple that when apart fails to live their lives but together they flourish and surround each other with so much love and respect that can’t do anything but succeed.

The secondary characters of the book were great also.   They showed how much they respected each other, trusted each other, and just how true their friendships were.   While some are work friends, some are social friends, there is never a doubt that Grayson and Mia only have friends that they trust and love.

He kisses me, a quick brush of lips over lips. “I need you naked. I need to feel you next to me.” He rolls me to my back and with that “for now” in the air, he moves and resettles with his lips to my stomach and this is not an accidental connection. My heart squeezes with the certainty that he’s reminding me of how many times he told me he wanted a little girl just like me. It affects me. We had so many plans. We were best friends. We were so many things that happened so very quickly and easily, and then it was gone.

He pulls down my pants, and all too quickly my sneakers and everything else are gone. I’m naked and not just my body. I am so very naked with this man and always have been. But as for my body, I’m not alone for long. He strips away his clothes, and I lift to my elbows to admire all that sinewy, perfect muscle before he reaches down, grabs my legs and pulls me to him. The minute my backside is on the edge of the bed, he goes down on a knee. I sit up and cup his face. “Not now. Now I need—I need—”

He cups my head and pulls my mouth to his, kissing me with a long stroke of his tongue before he says, “And I need to taste you.”

“Not now. I’m not leaving. We have time. I need—you. Here with me.”

His eyes soften but he still leans in and licks my clit, and then suckles. I’m all but undone by the sensation because one thing I know and know well is how good this man is with his tongue. But he doesn’t ignore my request. He pushes off the floor, and in a heartbeat, he’s kissing me and I don’t even know how we end up in the center of the bed, our naked bodies entwined. We just are and it’s wonderful and right in ways nothing has been in so very long.

He lifts my leg to his thigh and presses his thick erection inside me, filling me in ways that go beyond our bodies; driving deep, his hand on my backside, pulling me into him, pushing into me, but then we don’t move. Then we just lay there, intimately connected, lost in the moment and each other. “Is this what you wanted?”

“Yes,” I say. “This is what I wanted.”

“I didn’t think I’d ever have you here, like this, with me again.”

“Me either,” I whisper, my fingers curling on his jaw. “Grayson,” I say for no reason other than I need his name on my lips. I need everything with this man.

He kisses me, a fast, deep, passionate kiss. “I missed the hell out of you, Mia. So fucking much. I don’t think you really understand how much.”

This moment, right here, right now, is one of our raw, honest, perfect moments that has always made his betrayal hard to accept. I need that honesty in my life and with him and I don’t even think about denying him my truth. “I missed you, too. More than you know, Grayson.”

He squeezes my backside and drives into me again. I pant with the sensations that rip through my body, my hand going to his shoulder. “Nothing was right without you,” he says. “Nothing, Mia.” He kisses me, and I sink into the connection, pressing into him, into his thrust, into the hard warmth of his entire body. Needing to be close. Needing the things that separated us not to exist.

GUEST POST from Sarah Marie Graye author of The Victoria Lie

Today I have Sarah Marie Graye, author of The Victoria Lie, joining me on the blog as part of the Book Launch Blog Tour. It’s second book in The Butterfly Effect series, and Sarah Marie is here to talk about writing the second book in the series.

There are two main types of series: those planned in advance (usually with the high-level plot scoped out across multiple books before the first one is written); and those that start off with what’s meant to be a standalone book. Mine is the latter!

When I wrote The Second Cup, which is my first novel, it was a standalone story about how the lives of a group of friends unravel when someone they know commits suicide. The book has four main characters and each of them is affected in a different way.

I wrote it to explore how the actions of someone else can affect you and the people around you. I likened it to chaos theory: the idea that a butterfly flapping its wings can cause a hurricane on the other side of the world.

Shortly after publishing The Second Cup I was diagnosed with ADHD. I realised I’d inadvertently given the condition to Beth, one of the characters in book. So I decided to release an “extended” edition of the book that included character interviews at the back to give Beth the opportunity to be diagnosed too.

Revisiting my novel made me itch to write again – something I was sure I’d never feel once my first book was finally published!

When I was researching ADHD to understand it more, I discovered it has an incredibly high suicide rate – easily as high as those suffering Bipolar and Borderline Personality Disorder. So I decided to write a second book exploring ADHD and suicidal thoughts.

And I found myself writing the second book in a series!

In The Victoria Lie, the main characters are different from those in The Second Cup: it’s a “thematic” series, where the same thread runs through each book. The novel looks at what happens when Zoe decides to kill herself by taking a Paracetamol overdose.

I chose a Paracetamol overdose because it can take up to 10 days to kill someone, so there would be a period of time where Zoe is in hospital and able to interact with the people whose lives are affected by her actions. It’s another take on the butterfly effect idea explored in The Second Cup, but this time with the catalyst character alive to witness it and take part, rather than already being dead.

I think any death can be seen as the butterfly’s wings, having untold affects on people, even those who are not necessarily very close to the person who has died. I’m interested in looking at other ways in which death affects people and how they choose to live their lives – and I’m already mulling over ideas for the third book in the series.

REVIEW of Season of Wonder by RaeAnne Thayne

 Kindle Edition, 384 pages
Expected publication: September 25th 2018 by HQN Books

He’s giving her children a season of wonder…

Dani Capelli seized a chance to start over in a small town with her daughters. Now, facing her first Christmas in Haven Point, she wonders if leaving New York was a mistake. Dani loves working alongside veterinarian Dr. Morales, but her two children aren’t adjusting to small-town life. And then there’s Dr. Morales’s son, Ruben—Dani’s next-door neighbor. Gorgeous, muscled and dependable, the deputy sheriff is everything she secretly craves and can’t bear to risk loving…and losing.

Ruben never pictured himself falling for a big-city woman like Dani. But beneath her prickly facade, she’s caring and softhearted and she needs all the love and protection he can give. When Dani’s teenage daughter starts acting out, Ruben draws on family traditions to show the girls just how magical a Haven Point Christmas can be. But can he convince Dani that she’s found a home for the holidays—and forever—in his arms?

My Thoughts…

I found myself reading, turning pages, and finishing chapters while putting off all the rest of the chores that I was supposed to be doing.      Maybe it helped that it was a rainy gloomy day but I could not stop reading about Dani and Ruben.

Dani’s children were amazing.   The attitude of the teenager, the wanting to please of the youngest were so real to how my children were that I could picture myself as a single mom trying to handle the kids, a job, and now a man that I can’t stop thinking about.

Ruben…sigh… he was amazing.   He won my heart when he didn’t push the girls to talk to him; he talked to them as adults and didn’t expect more from them than what a child can give.     He knew that Dani and the girls were a family and if he wanted to be in any of their lives he had to be in all of their lives.      He treated Dani with respect but also as a woman, he showed her he was attracted to her, gave her space when she needed it, and accepted what she was able to give.
RaeAnne Thayne is an author that I always enjoy and Season of Wonder is no exception.    I recommend picking up this easy, light, and fun book.    It does not have to be read with the rest of the series as it is definitely a stand-alone book.

Eli marked off twenty-six and three-quarter inches as precisely as he could and lifted the blade of the circular saw.
“Oh my God, I soooo wasn’t kidding,” one of the women next door said loudly. “Nora really does need to get laid.”
His shoulders tensed. This wasn’t the first time he’d overheard the women loudly shit-talking his neighbor behind her back. He had no idea why she hung out with them.
“Maybe you should set her up with someone,” another woman added.
The other two laughed. “Can you imagine Nora on a date? She’s so uptight and frigid. Who would want to date her? No lay is worth that kind of torture. Can’t you just picture her busting out her bottle of sanitizer before the poor sap tries to hold her hand?”
His jaw tensed and he felt the last of his patience snap like an icicle in his warm hands. He sliced the saw through the wood, threw his protective glasses onto the ground, and marched over to the waist-high chain link fence. “I’d do it.”
All three women turned to look at him like he was a space alien who’d just beamed down to earth. The one who’d been talking the most leaned forward in her seat. “What did you just say?”
“You heard me. I’d go out with her.”
“You can’t be serious.”
The more this woman pushed, the more he wanted to put her in her place. No, Nora was not the kind of woman he would normally ask out—mainly because she was one of the few who didn’t seem to fall for his charm. In fact, he was pretty sure she didn’t think he had any charm whatsoever, but she was attractive and smart enough to read a book every month. That alone made her more dateable than half the population in this town. “Sure as hell am.”
The woman leaned forward, smiling at him like he was freshly caught prey in her snare. “If you’re looking for a date, I could show you a much better time.”
He shrugged, keeping his fake smile on his face. “No thanks. Backstabbing and mean isn’t my type.”
He probably enjoyed the shocked look on the woman’s face a little too much, but it was seriously fucking rude to trash-talk the hostess while sitting on her porch and eating her canapés.
The screen door slid open right at that moment. Nora walked out with a plate of decadent-looking mini-chocolate cakes that made his mouth water on sight. Her eyes darted from her friends to him and back again. “Um, what’s going on?”
He rested his hands against the old chain-link fence. “What’s going on is that your so-called friends are talking trash about your love life behind your back and don’t seem to think you can get a date. So I volunteered.”
“You what?”
“Volunteered. You and me. Tomorrow night at seven. I’ll drive.”
She slammed the cake tray onto the coffee table and set her hands on her hips. She looked around, like she couldn’t decide where to focus her anger. Of course she settled on him. “Who says I’d want to go out with you?”
He raised his eyebrow, liking the way she got flustered around him a little too much. “Got better plans?”
Even at the distance between them, he could see her suck in a breath. Her mouth hardened into a flat line, but she didn’t say no.
“Tomorrow. Seven. Dinner. Oh, and consider making new friends who aren’t so damn mean. These ladies don’t deserve any of those amazing-looking cakes.” He grabbed his plank of wood and headed into the house, wondering what the hell he’d just gotten himself into.

Abby I jump down and grab my knife, but as but as I pull back in what should be the segue into my quick getaway run—dramatic, smooth, commanding, just like in the movies—I’m jerked back. Shit. Shit. Shit. The knife is stuck. “Abby, let’s go!” Beth snaps at me. She’s crouched behind the truck where they can’t see her. “I cannot believe that I trusted that you were going to break up with him like a normal person. Let’s go.” “I’m trying,” I shush back, jerking again on the damn knife. “Just leave it.” “It has my initials on it.” A gift from my mom for my eighteenth birthday. She knows me so well. Not. “What the … seriously?” Beth moves around to the tire and pushes me out of the way. I duck when Jace’s ball cap comes into view over the back of the truck. Then, Beth and I yank on the knife together. Nothing happens. “Let me drive!” Tyler shouts. “Dude, what the fuck is your deal? It’s my truck. I’ll drive.” “But I’m thinking of getting one just like it, and I need to test drive something.” Tyler’s response is quick. “Dude, whatever,” Jace replies as I see the keys flying through the air, right before Tyler comes into view. “What the fuck are you doing, Abby?” he says through the side of his lips. I barely see his mouth move. “Trying to leave. What does it look like?” I whisper frantically. “Whoops!” Tyler drops the keys. He kneels in front of the tire and jerks the knife out in one swift move. Damn. His white T-shirt hugs his bicep, and, oh boy, he looks good tonight. I mean, he’s always had the whole Liam Hemsworth thing going on, but tonight he looks even hotter than a movie star. His hair is the perfect dirty blonde and his eyes are brightest green I’ve ever seen. Don’t even get me started on his smile. Shoot, any girl would agree to whatever he wanted just to see it one more time. I would know. I’ve been that girl. Tyler gives the knife to me and mouths “run.” We don’t hesitate in the slightest. I tuck the knife into my back pocket as I duck to run. The tire is successfully slashed, and I’m not leaving any evidence of my crime at the scene. Hunching behind her car, Beth shoots daggers from her eyes as she stares at me. The look is so intense, I need something else to focus on. Yes, this crack on the sidewalk is a nice distraction. “I can’t believe you,” she seethes. “It’s fine. No one saw us but Tyler,” I say just as Jace begins shouting a string of curses. Jackass. “I should have known you were going to do something crazy tonight. You made breaking up sound so simple,” Beth adds. I shrug and then we both hunker down tighter when the lights of Tyler’s truck flash our way. I crawl around the front of the car and watch them turn the corner. Then, I start to laugh. Beth is still glaring at me. Only now she’s standing with her hands on her hips and looking at me like my mom would when I’d come home past curfew, before she decided she didn’t want anything to do with me. The whole picture makes me laugh even harder. Slowly, Beth’s lips begin to tug into a smile. “You are out of control,” she says and unlocks her car. “There is nothing wrong with that,” I tell her.
