Dial A for Aunties by

Hardcover, 320 pages
Publication: April 27th 2021 by Berkley

Genre:  Romance, Contemporary, Mystery, Womens Fiction

What happens when you mix 1 (accidental) murder with 2 thousand wedding guests, and then toss in a possible curse on 3 generations of an immigrant Chinese-Indonesian family?

You get 4 meddling Asian aunties coming to the rescue!

When Meddelin Chan ends up accidentally killing her blind date, her meddlesome mother calls for her even more meddlesome aunties to help get rid of the body. Unfortunately, a dead body proves to be a lot more challenging to dispose of than one might anticipate, especially when it is inadvertently shipped in a cake cooler to the over-the-top billionaire wedding Meddy, her Ma, and aunties are working at an island resort on the California coastline. It's the biggest job yet for the family wedding business—"Don't leave your big day to chance, leave it to the Chans!"—and nothing, not even an unsavory corpse, will get in the way of her auntie's perfect buttercream flowers.

But things go from inconvenient to downright torturous when Meddy's great college love—and biggest heartbreak—makes a surprise appearance amid the wedding chaos. Is it possible to escape murder charges, charm her ex back into her life, and pull off a stunning wedding all in one weekend?

Review for Letters Across the Sea by Genevieve Graham

Letters Across the Sea by  Genevieve Graham

384 pages

Expected publication: April 27th 2021 by Simon Schuster

Genre:  Historical Fiction, Romance, WWII, Canada, Drama

From Goodreads:  Inspired by a little-known chapter of World War II history, a young Protestant girl and her Jewish neighbour are caught up in the terrible wave of hate sweeping the globe on the eve of war in this powerful love story that’s perfect for fans of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.

If you’re reading this letter, that means I’m dead. I had obviously hoped to see you again, to explain in person, but fate had other plans.

1933

At eighteen years old, Molly Ryan dreams of becoming a journalist, but instead she spends her days working any job she can to help her family through the Depression crippling her city. The one bright spot in her life is watching baseball with her best friend, Hannah Dreyfus, and sneaking glances at Hannah’s handsome older brother, Max.

But as the summer unfolds, more and more of Hitler’s hateful ideas cross the sea and “Swastika Clubs” and “No Jews Allowed” signs spring up around Toronto, a city already simmering with mass unemployment, protests, and unrest. When tensions between the Irish and Jewish communities erupt in a riot one smouldering day in August, Molly and Max are caught in the middle, with devastating consequences for both their families.

1939

Six years later, the Depression has eased and Molly is a reporter at her local paper. But a new war is on the horizon, putting everyone she cares about most in peril. As letters trickle in from overseas, Molly is forced to confront what happened all those years ago, but is it too late to make things right?

From the desperate streets of Toronto to the embattled shores of Hong Kong, Letters Across the Sea is a poignant novel about the enduring power of love to cross dangerous divides even in the darkest of times—from the #1 bestselling author of The Forgotten Home Child

My Thoughts…I never even thought about WWII and Canada.   I knew nothing for their WWII history but now I am intrigued.   I want to learn more, read more, and meet more amazing people from history.

The divide between Jews and other races was not something I really thought about happening in North America.   I thought of that as a Europe thing, but in Canada the divide led to protests, riots, loss of friends, and distrust in communities.   I could feel the pain and fear that Molly and Max felt as their friends took sides, fights broke out, and a community was divided.  Even with all the WWII books I have read, I struggle with the idea that a choice of religion is a reason not to like someone.  Yet, this is entirely what the late 30’s early 40’s was about, all over the world.

Genevieve Graham told the story of what Max, his friends, and Molly’s brothers saw after enlisting in careful detail that brought the battlefields to life.    The horror, the injuries, and the loss of lives were unthinkable, yet these brave heroes did what they had to just to keep alive.  I liked that those who came home were able to tell their stories.

Letters Across the Sea is an amazing story giving an unique look at a time when everyone had an opinion and the world was at war.  I recommend picking up your own copy.

TARA

I was supposed to be in charge. That was always my intention.

Until that slick corporate raider, Ethan Bradford, clicked his fancy pen and poof!

Just like that, I was under him, instead of on top.

Rich and powerful men–especially arrogant, handsome ones–are all the same.

I know exactly how to handle him, but when my father pulls rank and orders me to play nice, my plans of putting him in his place vanish.

I know his type. I’ve been around men like him my entire life, but one chance meeting with him and his son, makes me question everything I thought I knew.

ETHAN

When it comes to business, I always come out on top. Not even being a single dad can slow me down. I never let a good investment get away, and that includes Taylor Toys. After all, business is business, right?

How was I supposed to know a friendly meeting would set me on fire? Tara Taylor is a spoiled princess, used to getting everything she wants.

Sure, her good looks and smart mouth turn me on like nothing else. Despite her hostile stares, she triggered feelings I thought were long dead.

She dares to judge me while she stands there in her designer shoes, looking more beautiful than any marketing exec I’ve ever met. Instead of being grateful that I saved her family’s legacy, she blames me for their failure.

What was meant to be a formality turns into a game of wills.

I never lose. Except this time, I find myself wanting her more than I want to win. I find myself wanting her to take over.

From the twisted mind behind mega hit My Lovely Wife comes the story of a family—not unlike your own—just with a few more violent tendencies thrown in....

He Started It by Samantha Downing

publication: April 20. 2021 by Berkley

Genre:  Thriller, Mystery Thriller, Crime, Psychological Thriller

Beth, Portia, and Eddie Morgan haven't all been together in years. And for very good reasons—we'll get to those later. But when their wealthy grandfather dies and leaves a cryptic final message in his wake, the siblings and their respective partners must come together for a cross-country road trip to fulfill his final wish and—more importantly—secure their inheritance.

But time with your family can be tough. It is for everyone.

It's even harder when you're all keeping secrets and trying to forget a memory—a missing person, an act of revenge, the man in the black truck who won't stop following your car—and especially when at least one of you is a killer and there's a body in the trunk. Just to name a few reasons.

But money is a powerful motivator. It is for everyone.

My Thoughts… What did I read?   It started as a story of 3 siblings along with 2 of their spouses going on a trip across the country while retracing a trip they took with their grandfather years earlier.    Then people were being followed, things went missing, there were deaths, missing people, drugging’s, and so much more.

He Started It is a slow read.   It kept me entertained but it didn’t move at a fast pace.   There was a lot of details to the locations and the reasons for the stops along the way.  The details were all necessary due to the tying together of the two trips.   I was intrigued at the different places they stopped and the memories of what happen at each stop.   The characters all had their own memories of the trip but they came together for a very intriguing story.

The ending… I just don’t even know what to say!   Holy Moly!!!

Series: The Whiskeys: Dark Knights at Peaceful Harbor, Book 6

Length: 11 hrs and 19 mins

Unabridged Audiobook

Release date: 10-23-19

Language: English

Publisher: Melissa Foster

Publisher's Summary

Buckle up for a wild ride as Dixie Whiskey finds forever love in TAMING MY WHISKEY, a funny, sexy, and emotionally riveting standalone romance by New York Times best-selling author Melissa Foster. The perfect love story for those who enjoy fiercely loyal and insanely sexy alpha heroes, smart, sassy heroines, strong family bonds, bikers, babies, and more!

In TAMING MY WHISKEY....
Being the princess of the Dark Knights motorcycle club doesn’t come with a white knight or a fairy-tale castle, and that’s okay, because Dixie Whiskey has never needed a man to slay her dragons or make her whole. Even so, after watching each of her brothers fall in love, she’d sure like a shot at her own happily ever after. But with the Dark Knights watching over her and the only man she’s ever wanted out of reach, she’s not holding her breath.

As the launch of Silver-Stone Cycles’ biggest line approaches, Jace Stone is left needing a favor from the one woman who holds the power to take him to his knees. He knows when it comes to sinfully gorgeous and sharp-tongued Dixie Whiskey, he must stay on his toes and keep his walls firmly in place. But Jace needs her for his business - and Jace Stone always gets what he wants.

When the tall, gruff, and darkly handsome biker presents an opportunity that any other woman might see as the chance of a lifetime, Dixie turns him down flat. But Jace is determined, and he pulls out all the stops - sending Dixie’s overprotective brothers up in arms. Rebellious Dixie takes a stand - going after the freedom, and the man, she’s always wanted. One scorching kiss leads to an undeniable connection, but Jace isn't looking to be tied down, and Dixie refuses to play second fiddle. Can two untamable hearts find forever love in each other’s arms?

Audiobook Review…A strong and sexy woman needs a strong and sexy narrator to tell her story and Devra Woodward is just that woman.   She took the strength and spunky of Dixie and brought her to life.   The tone of her voice, the strong tone, and the use of pitch was perfect for a story that I had been waiting for.   I will not leave Aiden Snow, one of my most favorite narrators, out of this review.   He took strong, alpha Jace and share his story showing his gentle side while keeping him strong and in charge.   The dual narrators are so much fun.  I love hearing them both tell the story of two amazing characters.

Ebook Review…Oh Dixie, I always knew you were a strong woman. I never dreamed you’d be this much fun to see fall in love. When Dixie fell, she fell. There is no halfway with this lady. She dove in headfirst and never looked back. Okay, yes, she fell when she was 18 and didn’t understand what it all meant but she set her eyes on Jace never wavering from her decision. I love that she didn’t make it easy on Jace. She made him work for it, let her heart get broken, but never closed it off to the happiness that she knew she deserved.

Jace, I thought you were going to lose her a time or two. Jace made stupid mistakes that only a man who was head over heals in love would make. He learned quickly, although not quick enough for Dixie, and made his amends in grand ways. He loved, learned from his mistakes, and worshipped Dixie as she deserves. Jace is the biggest alpha male and the only one who could stand by Dixie’s side.

Taming My Whiskey is amazing. It is a story of family, love, and strength. The strong female lead character is what I expected of a Whiskey and Jace is the perfect husband for her. Melissa Foster did an amazing job of updating the readers on the rest of the Whiskey Family while not letting them overshadow Dixie and her story.

Review for The Social Graces by Renee Rosen

The Social Graces by  Renee Rosen

Kindle Edition

Expected publication: April 20th 2021 by Berkley

Genre:  Historical Fiction, New York, American

From Goodreads:  The author of Park Avenue Summer throws back the curtain on one of the most remarkable feuds in history: Mrs. Vanderbilt and Mrs. Astor's notorious battle for control of New York society during the Gilded Age.

In the glittering world of Manhattan's upper crust, where wives turn a blind eye to husbands' infidelities, and women have few rights and even less independence, society is everything. The more celebrated the hostess, the more powerful the woman. And none is more powerful than Caroline Astor—the Mrs. Astor.

But times are changing.

Alva Vanderbilt has recently married into one of America's richest families. But what good is money when society refuses to acknowledge you? Alva, who knows what it is to have nothing, will do whatever it takes to have everything.

Sweeping three decades and based on true events, this is a gripping novel about two fascinating, complicated women going head to head, behaving badly, and discovering what’s truly at stake.

My Thoughts…I have not read many books set in the Gilded Age or about the Vanderbilts and Astors so I went into this book without knowing any of the history.    That makes me sad to say but I can say now that I have read every single word of The Social Graces and now have knowledge and history of a time in American were New York Society was in a fight for their Queen.

Both families were rich, very rich, yet they could not accept each other.   I was intrigued at how much pressure the families were under just to stay within the society of New York.   They had to do everything right knowing that one misstep could push them out of society.    It seemed that everything they did had an ulterior motive.

Alva Vanderbilt wanted in so badly and Caroline Astor wanted her to stay out just as badly.  I enjoyed watching them both make their plans, set up their parties, and take the steps needed to live the lives that they felt they deserved.  I found it interesting that there were many times that they questioned what they were doing but felt that they had no choice because it was what was expected of them.

Renee Rosen is a go-to historical fiction author for me.  I always recommend her to other readers.

**Thank you Berkley for a copy of the book via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
