REVIEW of The Secret Life of Mrs. London by Rebecca Rosenberg

2018 MARKS 100 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF HOUDINI – LONDON AFFAIR

New historical novel reveals details of the love triangle.

Houdini “stirred me to the deep” – Charmian London’s diary

2018 kicks off with a provocative novel, THE SECRET LIFE OF MRS. LONDON, by Rebecca Rosenberg, about Jack and Charmian London’s fateful meeting with Harry and Bess Houdini.

“One of Houdini’s best kept secrets was his affair with Charmian London in 1918. Now Rebecca Rosenberg tells the story using an elegant blend of fact and fiction, creating a Houdini book like no other. THE SECRET LIFE OF MRS. LONDON is a true peek behind the curtain and a page-turner.” –John Cox, wildabouthoudini.com

November, 1915. The Londons attended the Great Houdini Magic Show at the Orpheum Theatre in Oakland, California, where Houdini performed his Chinese Water Torture Chamber Act. The couples dined afterwards and became fast friends, spending Thanksgiving together, and keeping up a lively friendship which lasted until Houdini’s death.

January, 1918. Charmian London traveled to New York to see Houdini in the patriotic World War I extravaganza, "Cheer Up" at the Hippodrome Theater, where he famously made a five-ton elephant disappear on stage. Most of the evidence of their affair comes from Charmian London's diaries at the Huntington Library in Pasadena, California. Charmian wrote that after they saw each other a few times, Houdini made a "declaration" that "rather shakes me up." They became intimate a short time later. She wrote that Houdini’s visits "stirred me to the deep," and that he felt the same, declaring, "I'm mad about you," and "I give all of myself to you." Throughout, she refers to him alternately as "Magic," her "Magic Man," or "Magic Lover."

My Thoughts…

I have been a historical fiction fan forever and was intrigued by The Secret Life of Mrs. London.      Jack London was an unknown to me.   I am not familiar with his writing, his life, or anything else about him.      It was interesting to learn about him in a fiction book, but still walk away with facts about his life.    He was not overly likable, the way he treated those close to him was not something that I could understand.   He was entirely into himself, his needs, and the way he wanted those in the public to perceive him.    I struggled with his decisions and his actions but they played a huge part of the story of Houdini and Charmian (Mrs. London).

Houdini is someone I am familiar with.   He has always intrigued me.  I love magic and risks he took while entertaining crowds has always interested me.    The author, Rebecca Rosenberg, did an amazing job of describing his shows, from the things he wore to the tricks her did I could picture them as I was reading.     The relationship with his wife, Bessie, was sweet.   There is no doubt he loved her but there was more to their relationship.

Charmian is not your typical wife.   She is wife to an eccentric writer who is very demanding of her while not always giving her what she needs.  Her devotion to Jack London was unrequited.   I wanted her to be stronger, stand up to him, demand he give her the attention she needed.

The Secret Life of Mrs. London is an amazing historical fiction story that I would recommend picking up.

“The Secret Life of Mrs. London is a heart-wrenching portrait of a marriage between two people who utterly depend on one another, but ultimately aren't enough for each other. With skillful precision of language, Rosenberg weaves a narrative that defines the complexities of love, passion and art. This is a perceptive, deeply moving novel by a great new talent about a couple who has gone unnoticed in historical fiction until now. Anyone who has ever loved another person will want to read this book.”

He wants her, and he has to have her. It doesn’t matter what she’s twenty years younger than him, and has a father that would rather see him dead than have his baby girl anywhere near him. REVIEW of Why Kill the Innocent (Sebastian St. Cyr #13) by C.S. Harris

Hardcover, 368 pages
Expected publication: April 3rd 2018 by Berkley

In the newest mystery from the national bestselling author of Where the Dead Lie, a brutal murder draws Sebastian St. Cyr into the web of the royal court, where intrigue abounds and betrayal awaits.

London, 1814. As a cruel winter holds the city in its icy grip, the bloody body of a beautiful young musician is found half-buried in a snowdrift. Jane Ambrose's ties to Princess Charlotte, the only child of the Prince Regent and heir presumptive to the throne, panic the palace, which moves quickly to shut down any investigation into the death of the talented pianist. But Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, and his wife Hero refuse to allow Jane's murderer to escape justice.

Untangling the secrets of Jane's world leads Sebastian into a maze of dangerous treachery where each player has his or her own unsavory agenda and no one can be trusted. As the Thames freezes over and the people of London pour onto the ice for a Frost Fair, Sebastian and Hero find their investigation circling back to the palace and building to a chilling crescendo of deceit and death . . .

My Thoughts…

I was intrigued by the idea that a book was written about a piano teacher to the rich being found killed on the street during a snow storm.     There had to be more, some twists and turns, some additional storylines but there wasn’t.   Oh, there were a few twists that I didn’t see coming but for the most part the story was only about a piano teacher being murdered and following Sebastian St. Cyr work to solve it.    It just seemed that the story went in circles.    The same characters telling their story, adding more to the story each time they are asked about it.    Each character has an excuse as to why they didn’t tell their story the other times they were asked but it just seemed weird.

I had a hard time following who all the characters are, how they are related, and why they are relevant to the murder of Jane Ambrose.  This is the first book in this series, the Sebastian St. Cyr,  of 13 books that I have read and maybe that added to my confusion.    Possibly the back stories of the characters would clear up who everyone was and how they were involved in Jane Ambrose’s murder.

There is more to come in this series and I would consider reading another in hopes of better understanding the story.

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW of Game of Love by Melissa Foster

Game of Love
Love in Bloom: The Remingtons, Book 1
Narrated by: B.J. Harrison
Series: Love in Bloom, Book 10, Love in Bloom: The Remingtons, Book 1
Length: 7 hrs and 29 mins
Unabridged
Release date: 02-14-17
Language: English
Publisher: Melissa Foster

Publisher's Summary

The Remingtons are a series of stand-alone romances that may also be enjoyed as part of the larger Love in Bloom series.

Ellie Parker is a master at building walls around her heart. In the 25 years she's been alive, Dex Remington has been the only person who has always believed in her and been there for her. But four years earlier, she came to Dex seeking comfort and then disappeared like a thief in the night, leaving him a broken man.

Dex Remington is one of the top PC game developers in the United States. He's handsome, smart, and numb. So damn numb that he's not sure he'll ever find a reason to feel again.

A chance encounter sparks intense desires in Ellie and Dex. Desires that make her want to run - and make him want to feel. A combination of lust and fear leads these young lovers down a dangerous path. Is it possible to cross a burned bridge, or are they destined to be apart forever?

MY THOUGHTS...

The Love in Bloom Series is narrated by one narrator, BJ Harrison. He has captured the feelings, the love, and the friendships perfectly. His tone and cadence is perfect for these sweet, sexy, loving characters.

The Remington Family is absolutely amazing. This series starts with Dex and Ellie. Dex is a dream guy. Although his heart has been broken by the same girl not once but twice, he is still willing to put his heart on the line and let Ellie back into his life. That is what I call true love. Dex is not a pushover though, he knows that he is taking a risk and does not let Ellie walk all over him. He won’t let her run, as is her past history, and he pushes her to talk to him, tell him the truth.

Ellie is a rough cookie. She has had a tough background, being in foster home after foster home and having to move often. Not to mention the things she saw and dealt with while in those homes. Running has always been her go to escape. When Dex calls her out on her disappearing she knows that she has to stay and fight for the man she loves, has loved since she was twelve years old. I was cheering for her and her relationship with Dex to work from the very first page.

Melissa Foster has written another book that I could not possibly stop reading. Some of the characters in this book are familiar from the Snow Sister’s and the Braden’s series, which I loved. Game of Love can be read as part of a series or as a standalone book. I highly recommend this entire series, including this book.

REVIEW of The Secret to Southern Charm by Kristy Woodson Harvey

Praise for Kristy Woodson Harvey and The Secret to Southern Charm:

*One of Southern Living’s “Best Spring Break Reads”*

“Escape to the beach with Southern writer Kristy Woodson Harvey’s newest book, the second in her Peachtree Bluff series. It’s a story about hope and heartache and the unbreakable bonds of family.”–Southern Living

“Harvey’s (Slightly South of Simple, 2017) growing fan base will find another great beach read in this second novel in her Peachtree Bluff trilogy… Peachtree Bluff is the quintessential beach town, full of quirky residents and old bungalows, and readers will practically feel the hot sun and the sand between their toes. Harvey is an up-and-coming southern writer with staying power.” --Booklist

“Kristy Woodson Harvey has delivered another masterpiece with the second book in her beautifully Southern, evocative Peachtree Bluff series. Let's just say that this one had better have a sequel too, because I'm not ready to leave these charming ladies behind." --Kristin Harmel, international bestselling author of The Sweetness of Forgetting and When We Meet Again

“What a wonderful sequel to Slightly South of Simple in the Peachtree Bluff series. I couldn't have survived if Ms. Harvey hadn't resolved Sloan and Adam's crisis in this book and I have to admit I'm happy with the outcome. Now you have to wait for book 3 to see how Emerson and Mark turn out. This series is three generations of strong women who are the best support system for each other. This book is a great representation of the strong southern woman who put family first and deal with life as it happens. Great beach/pool read for your summer vacation if you can wait that long. Can read stand alone but strongly recommend you read book 1 first.” --Ann Klausing, Books-a-Million

“One of the hottest new Southern writers.” —Parade.com

“The ‘it girl’ of Southern fiction.” --Daytime Confidential

“Writers come and writers go, but Kristy Woodson Harvey is here to stay. The warmth, wit, and wisdom of this novel pave her way into the exclusive sisterhood of southern writers.” ―The Huffington Post

Back Cover Copy:

Leaving fans “practically [begging] for a sequel” (Bookpage), critically acclaimed author Kristy Woodson Harvey returns with the second novel in her beloved Peachtree Bluff series, featuring a trio of sisters and their mother who discover a truth that will change not only the way they see themselves, but also how they fit together as a family.

After finding out her military husband is missing in action, middle sister Sloane’s world crumbles as her worst nightmare comes true. She can barely climb out of bed, much less summon the strength to be the parent her children deserve.

Her mother, Ansley, provides a much-needed respite as she puts her personal life on hold to help Sloane and her grandchildren wade through their new grief-stricken lives. But between caring for her own aging mother, her daughters, and her grandchildren, Ansley’s private worry is that secrets from her past will come to light.

But when Sloane’s sisters, Caroline and Emerson, remind Sloane that no matter what, she promised her husband she would carry on for their young sons, Sloane finds the support and courage she needs to chase her biggest dreams—and face her deepest fears. Taking a cue from her middle daughter, Ansley takes her own leap of faith and realizes that, after all this time, she might finally be able to have it all.

Harvey’s signature warmth and wit make this a charming and poignant story of first loves, missed opportunities, and second chances and proves that she is "the next major voice in Southern fiction” (Elin Hilderbrand, New York Times bestselling author).

My Thoughts…

I am hooked on Kristy Woodson Harvey’s southern charm.     While reading I was actually hearing the characters with southern accents, picturing them in their houses with wraparound porches, and drinking sweet tea.

The Secret to Southern Charm is the second book in The Peachtree Bluff Series.    I think that the books are better read in order.   Book two starts off exactly where book one ended.    The storyline continues with Ansley, Caroline, Sloane, and Emerson all back in Georgia together.

We learn about Sloane’s life as a military wife and the fears she had when she was first married.    I saw Sloane’s strength when dealing with her husband’s MIA status, while she needed a little push to get out of her own head and back into the real world I could see her figuring out how to put one foot in front of the other getting back to living.    She took care of her children, she painted again, and she found out what was missing of herself even before the MIA.

While this is mostly Sloane’s story the spotlight is shared with the rest of her family.   I loved catching up with Ansley and her long ago love Jack, seeing Emerson and Mark being together, and watching Caroline figure out if James is who she is meant to be with.     These are storylines that are not quite done.   There is more in store for each of these characters.

I am excited for more of Peachtree Bluff series and the amazing Southern Charm.
