Jackson mentally sighed. He wondered when that bit of information would come to her attention. “Well, Mrs. Beaumont…”

She bristled and cut him off. “Don’t call me that. I no longer use my married name. Miss Stone, if you please.”

I don’t please, he thought. His agitation with her served to make his Southern drawl more pronounced. “Well, lady,” he countered with a caustic edge to his voice, “after two years undercover, my supervisor transferred me to the San Francisco field office, and I’ve been training the officers at the McAllister Forensic lab in behavioral analysis.”

“Why aren’t you living in San Francisco? Why are you living next door to me?” she asked suspiciously.

“I like the view.” He tipped an imaginary Stetson.

Lily gritted her teeth. “Why are you constantly at the school?”

Dee Stewart has spent more than three decades teaching high school English. Although she enjoys being a teacher and shares her love of literature with her students, her passion is writing. She started writing at age thirteen after being inspired by Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden mysteries. In high school she was introduced to her first historical romance and fell in love with the genre. My Thoughts…

Lately, I have become hooked on historical fiction.    Gold Digger is a wonderful look at what life was like during the gold and silver rush in Colorado.   Life wasn’t easy, working a mine was a lot of work with the risk of injury and death every day.   There is social acceptance, which Baby Doe didn’t have.   There is the political aspect of Gold vs. Silver.  

Gold Digger is from a time that I am just starting to explore and I couldn’t wait to read about Baby Doe’s life as a miner’s wife.   Not only was she a miner’s wife but she also worked alongside the men at the mines learning the trade.  I loved that she didn’t stay in the traditional wife role but wanted to learn about what her husband was doing even if this meant she wasn’t accepted by everyone.  Baby Doe broke barriers and blazed her own trail.  

I love when I finish a book, a historical book, and then realize how much I have learned while reading it.   Gold Digger opened the door to time, a location, and a lifestyle that I didn’t know much about.

“What time are you delivering me to Malcom?” I asked, applying subtle pressure to his groin. Just enough to tease and to show I knew how to handle him.
