My Last Lament by James William Brown

 ebook
Expected publication: March 1st 2017 by Berkley Books

A poignant and evocative novel of one Greek woman's story of her own and her nation's epic struggle in the aftermath of World War II.

Aliki is one of the last of her kind, a lamenter who mourns and celebrates the passing of life. She is part of an evolving Greece, one moving steadily away from its rural traditions. To capture the fading folk art of lamenting, an American researcher asks Aliki to record her laments, but in response, Aliki sings her own story...

It begins in a village in northeast Greece, where Aliki witnesses the occupying Nazi soldiers execute her father for stealing squash. Taken in by her friend Takis's mother, Aliki is joined by a Jewish refugee and her son, Stelios. When the village is torched and its people massacred, Aliki, Takis and Stelios are able to escape just as the war is ending.

Fleeing across the chaotic landscape of a post-war Greece, the three become a makeshift family. They are bound by friendship and grief, but torn apart by betrayal, madness and heartbreak.

Through Aliki's powerful voice, an unforgettable one that blends light and dark with wry humor,
My Last Lament delivers a fitting eulogy to a way of life and provides a vivid portrait of a timeless Greek woman, whose story of love and loss is an eternal one.

My Thoughts…

My Last Lament is told by Aliki.    She witnesses her father’s murder while in Greece during WWII.    The story she tells starts at her childhood and continues throughout her life.     There was so much death, poverty, and hope within Aliki’s story.

This story is written as if Aliki is speaking directly to the reader.   I felt like I was having a personal conversation with her and I was connected to her.      I could feel her pain, her worries, and her hope in the future.      She was such a strong and amazing character that I found myself looking up to her.   Her determination to make a life for herself and those who are important to her made her a hero of her time.     I was in awe of all that she did without yet when someone else was in need she never hesitated to offer her help.

My Last Lament is a worthy read.   It is not a light or easy story but one that will stay with you.

Praise for MY LAST LAMENT
“This is an astonishing novel, an imaginative feat of epic proportions. I was gripped from the first line. These characters! This story! Here is war and joy and terror and love and death and humor all mixed up, just as in life. I loved MY LAST LAMENT so much I kept shoving it in people’s faces, saying,
‘This book! You have to read this book!’”
—Anna Solomon, author of Leaving Lucy Pear and The Little Bride

“If you loved All the Light We Cannot See, you will devour this novel;
a heart-rending World War II story you’ve never heard and won’t soon forget.”
—Susan Meissner, author of Secrets of a Charmed Life and A Bridge Across the Ocean

“A Greek epic in its own right, MY LAST LAMENT is the story of a nation trying to live up to its past while struggling to come to terms with its present, and of the indomitable people surviving that struggle. Aliki is a vivid and fully-realized heroine, both fragile and formidable, and her story is one that will keep readers quickly turning the pages even as they linger over Brown's lovely language.
MY LAST LAMENT is a book I will never forget."
—Alyssa Palombo, author of The Violinist of Venice and The Most Beautiful Woman in Florence

A remarkable accomplishment, a long and circuitous tale of three young people,
orphaned by World War II in Greece, and their struggles to survive the brutal and chaotic aftermath—
a real Greek tragedy, full of wit, pathos, and poetry”
—Dennis McFarland, author of Nostalgia

Bayside Promises (The Bayside Hunters #3) by Stacy Claflin

Series

A pretty new realtor comes into town and stirs competition for Sullivan right after he’s taken over his dad’s company. As he fights for his new business, he starts to find himself falling for the competition.

My Thoughts…

The Bayside Hunters are amazing!     This is Sullivan’s story.     Haley comes back to a town that she vowed to never return to just to keep an eye on her sister while her mother is out of town.     A chance run in between high school friends make the sparks fly.     There was no doubt that there was something special and steamy between Sullivan and Haley.  While there was no romantic history between them, I had no doubt there was a romantic future coming for them.

I love the small town setting, the realistic characters, the fun storyline, and the romantic adventures within Bayside Promises.    I could picture the story playing out as I read the words and was excited to continue getting to know the characters.

Bayside Promises is part of a series but each book can be read as a standalone.   I recommend reading the whole series.

The Captain's Rebel by C.B. Halverson, Colleen Halverson

ebook
Expected publication: April 3rd 2017 by Entangled Publishing LLC
Land. Power. Influence. Mary O’Malley knows these are the only things that matter in her war-torn country. Determined to win back her ancestral home, she must embark on a journey across the Atlantic disguised as a cabin boy. But her ruse brings her under the control of a dangerous sea captain who demands from her the one thing she will never give—complete and total submission.

Captain Richard Grant runs a tight ship, and he didn’t claw his way up through the ranks of the Royal Navy to be undone by a headstrong Irish girl hell-bent on jeopardizing his mission and his crew. If she insists on dressing like a man, then she can take his punishments. He demands obedience, but his insatiable need for her leads to a complex game of sex, desire, and dominance not even he can control.

Awakened by the passion Grant stirs in her, Mary finds herself falling for the stern captain. But when her false identity leads to rumors of her spying for the French, she must choose between her love for Ireland and the man who commands her body—and her heart.

My Thoughts…
Who knew….Mary had a dark, sexy, and dangerous side.   I found her so interesting.    The life she lives was not easy and some of that is of her own doing but much of it is by circumstances beyond her control.   Yet when she meets Captain Grant her dark and dominant side came flying out.    Mary was strong, bold, and able to hold her own in any situation in a time when women were not fully respected or taken serious.

The Captain’s Rebel is a great historical pirate story with the twists of some DBSM.   CB Halverson did an amazing job of heating the scenes up while telling a story of life on a pirate ship at the same time.

The ending was perfect and unexpected.   I thought I knew what was going to happen, I thought I knew where it was heading yet I was surprised.    I look forward to more from CB Halverson.

From Ant to Eagle by Alex Lyttle & GIVEAWAY

Paperback, 224 pages
Expected publication: April 1st 2017 by Central Avenue Publishing
My name is Calvin Sinclair, I'm eleven years old and I have a confession… ...I killed my brother.

It's the summer before grade six and Calvin Sinclair is bored to tears. He’s recently moved from a big city to a small town and there's nothing to do. It’s hot, he has no friends and the only kid around is his six-year-old brother, Sammy, who can barely throw a basketball as high as the hoop. Cal occupies his time by getting his brother to do almost anything: from collecting ants to doing Calvin’s chores. And Sammy is all too eager - as long as it means getting a "Level" and moving one step closer to his brother's Eagle status.

When Calvin meets Aleta Alvarado, a new girl who shares his love for
Goosebumps books and adventure, Sammy is pushed aside. Cal feels guilty but not enough to change. At least not until a diagnosis makes things at home start falling apart and he's left wondering whether Sammy will ever complete his own journey...

From Ant To Eagle.

My Thoughts…

Oh My…. A book about a young child, Sammy,  with cancer is never the type of book I like to read.   Yet for some reason I could not pass on this book and I have never been happier that I read a book.

From Ant To Eagle should have been a sad story.   This should have been story that would devastate me with the idea of a child suffering through cancer but I finished and I thought how amazing of a story.     I was sad, I had tears but more so I was amazed at how a child, not the one with cancer but his brother, could see what adults could not.     Cal, the older brother of Sammy, is the type of brother that protects his sibling, puts up with him when he would really rather do his own thing, and realizes that he knows what Sammy needs to have whatever happiness he can have.

While this is a cancer book, it is a story about family and sibling’s.   This is not a story of Sammy, the boy with cancer.  It is a story of Cal the boy who has a brother with cancer.    This is Cal’s story on how he feels, how he deals, and how cancer affects him.     From Ant To Eagle is a story that will pull at your heartstrings from the beginning to the end.

EXCERPT

Standing at the receptionist’s desk, I waited to hear the verdict. Would Wade see me or not? When I heard his answer, I breathed a sigh of relief. I didn’t want my stupidity to ruin my shop’s chances at success.

The receptionist smiled up at me. “You can go back now, Ms. Carmichael. His office is the last one on the right.”

“Thank you,” I replied with a smile of my own.

Pulse pounding in my ears, I walked down the hall to Wade’s office. I had a folder of my designs tucked under my arm. Hopefully, it’d be enough to persuade him. Taking a deep breath, I knocked on his door.

“Come in,” he called out, his voice making me shiver.

I hated how this man made me feel like that. It’d been over a week and I could still feel the way he touched every square inch of my body. I wasn’t a needy woman, but he made me want more. This is business, nothing more.

Head held high, I opened the door. Wade was at his desk, leaning back in his chair, all cool and confident, dressed in his expensive suit with his brown hair perfectly coifed. Definitely not a bundle of nerves, like I was. “Mr. Chandler, it’s good to see you again.”

His brows lifted. “Likewise. Although I’d probably believe it more if you hadn’t run out on me the last time.”

And there it was.

Biting my lip, I shut the door. I couldn’t tell if he was angry, or didn’t care. “Thought I’d save you the trouble,” I confessed. “We both had a little too much to drink that night. And let’s face it, it was either going to be me or you. And I prefer not to be the one left behind.”

“Neither do I,” he said in all seriousness. “So, what brings you here?”
