Synopsis:

Tangled meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer in this Breton folklore-inspired fantasy debut brimming with wry humor, epic adventure, and an irresistible romance.

At the peak of the Breton Renaissance, Lilac Trécesson is held prisoner in her own castle after a most wicked secret is revealed on the eve of her fifteenth birthday. Years later, her Accession looms upon her father’s decision to abdicate, and between town riots and the noble family bent on snatching her throne, she prepares for the worst…

Until a letter arrives from The Witch of Lupine Grotto, detailing a curious offer to banish her curse forever.

Her heirloom dagger at the ready, Lilac embarks into Brocéliande and finds herself in the grasp of a bloodthirsty barkeep who demands her help in exchange for protection against the even deadlier forces of the woods.

She is thrust on a quest to uphold her family’s legacy—and her sovereign right to destroy it and start anew—by any means necessary. Pity the fool to underestimate the girl with subpar blade skills but the pure spite to make up for it.

This is the tale of a cursed princess,

A crestfallen killer,

The town that wants them to burn,

And the witch who can save them both.

Excerpt:  “Don’t you think that if I wanted to seek revenge on humanity, on your kingdom,” he said, brushing the wisps of hair that framed her face, “that I would start right here?”
The words, coupled with his low voice ruffled her, sent spine-breaking chills down the muscles in her back. “Yet that’s me being merciful. If I were truly a cruel being, I would still release you. You and your family would then cower from your prison of a keep as I explored every corner of your kingdom, leaving no stone unturned until the streets ran with blood from argoat to armor—until Laurent had been avenged one hundredth times over. I would pick your kin apart, one by one, leaving you to watch.” His grin was blissful. “I’d leave you for the very end.”
“The only reason you haven’t killed me is because you are unable,” she said slowly. “You could, but not in a way that would count.”
As fast as he’d grabbed ahold, he released her. The vampire paced away, up the curved edge of the pool.
“I am not Laurent. My conscience never bore much semblance to his when he was alive, and it certainly doesn’t now.” Every word escaped his lips with crystal clear diction.
Before she could calculate how quickly she’d be able to escape, and the chances of her impeccable balance against the moss-covered rock path, Garin loomed over her again.
“Before my curse, I was unstoppable. Bastion and I wreaked havoc in both forest and borough. It was glorious,” he said, his face twisting into something like despair. “Look at me now. It’s humiliating enough that I allowed you to escape from me at the inn. That I allowed you to keep your life when you dared stab me and run from me at the campsite. Yet here you are, not a drop of blood spilled at my hands. All because of my word.”
“I find it impressive,” she said quickly, thinking of something consoling, anything she could say to bring him back to sanity. “It shows you can exercise your powers when necessary, and that you have restraint.”
“Restraint?” Garin laughed again, his voice cruel, cracking against the high ceiling. “I would not call the great effort it has taken for me to keep my distance from you, restraint.”
“What is it, then?”
The look that flashed across his face was one of a man who was close to giving up. One of exasperation. “It is torment, princess.”
