In 1991,
Eddie Romano, an undersized, unconfident kid, finds an antique baseball glove
while on a treasure hunt of the ruins of the old Comiskey Park in Chicago.
Instantly
that glove becomes his obsession. While sleeping at night, he's transported to
a dreary, decrepit ballpark where he learns the game of baseball from Billy, a
skillful young ballplayer, who seems to be under the control of a dark,
sinister figure who calls himself, “The Manager.”
Miraculously,
Eddie becomes a better ballplayer and is rewarded for anti-social behavior by
having his skills improve. As his bad attitude causes him to lose more and more
friends on his team, he starts receiving phone calls from legendary baseball
players Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig who attempt to steer his behavior in the
complete opposite direction.
Unbeknownst
to Eddie, two factions of “angels” are waging a war for his soul. What is the
price of glory? Eddie will soon find out.
My Thoughts: I started this book having no clue what I would think of a young boy being tempted by Satan. What I found was a book that had a young boy struggling with right and wrong while only wanting to achieve his greatest dreams. His parents try to guide him and encourage him but they also place expectations on him that push him to make certain choices.
I cheered for Eddie; I wanted him to be the baseball player
he dreams of, but I really was hoping that he would follow the right path to
get there. He was making decisions and
changing his life in ways that would lead him the wrong way. I cringed at times but had hopes that Babe
and Lou would be able to lead him the right way.
I LOVE that baseball was the story. Especially old-time baseball. Babe? Lou Gehrig? Idols to all baseball players and fans. Lou and Babe were the “good guys” in the book
and I can only imagine how many current players would love to have a phone call
with advice from them today. The Chicago
White Sox ( I am a huge Chicago Cubs fan) was great. I love that I could picture Comiskey
Park.
Satan’s Glove is a great book. There are a lot of lessons to be learned and
I will recommend this book. I feel like this is a book that is under the
radar but deserves a lot more
attention.
