2020 in Reviews... Books I've Reviewed in July 2020

Morgan All she was supposed to do was step into her twin’s perfect life for a little while and take an opportunity to be the fun one for once. To know what it felt like to really live. The last thing she ever meant to do was fall for her sister’s husband. How can something that is so wrong feel so right? Jasen His wife had become almost like a roommate over the past few years. The distance between them had been insurmountable. Until recently. Something about her is … different. She’s warmer, softer somehow. Jasen is shocked to find himself falling in love with his gorgeous wife all over again. But… is she really his wife?

When tragedy strikes, Morgan is forced to choose between continuing the lie and owning up to her deception. Doing the right thing could mean losing the only man she’s ever loved, but can a relationship built on betrayal ever truly last? More importantly, will Jasen even want her when he learns the truth—or will the price of forgiveness simply be more than he’s willing to pay?

My Thoughts...

Twins where one married the man the other had a crush on in high school.   The married twin decides she does not want to live her life anymore and begs the twin with the crush to take her place.   Sounds like trouble waiting to happen.   Let me say that it was trouble with a capital T and it was so good to read about.

I found The Deceptive Twin to be easy to read, fun to read, I read it quickly and loved every word.    The dynamic between Morgan and Monroe was different.   Usually, twins are super close but these two lived entirely different lives and did not get along so well.     When Monroe asks Morgan to take over for her there was no doubt that sparks would ignite between Morgan and Jasen.   I loved watching Morgan try to put herself out there as Monroe without giving up the values that she has lived her entire life by.

Jasen was interesting.   He wanted his marriage to work so badly that he overlooked all the clues that something was off about his wife.   I loved that he wanted it to work but I did wonder how he could miss all the clues that Morgan was giving off.    His reactions as the story continued and things changed between him and Morgan were spot on.   They were realistic and true to what he really wanted in life.

Feeling her life is at a standstill, Jill McCallister jumps at the chance to visit Morgan’s Grove, the town founded by her great-great-great-grandfather. Eager to discover her roots and do research for a new book, she drives from Colorado to Texas, excited to meet the inhabitants of her grandfather’s legacy.

Jill immerses herself in the charming community, enjoying the residents and their quirky traditions. When she meets the mysterious Rick Wright, she almost forgets she’s sworn off men, but she’s not willing to risk getting too involved, especially since she will be returning home in a few weeks.

When the winter festival kicks into high gear, Jill and Rick are thrown together to work on a project, and sparks soon fly. Although she fights it, Jill can’t help falling hard for his soulful eyes and flirty smile. But as tempting as Rick is, he’s hiding something, and the mystery writer in Jill is determined to discover his secret.

With the clock running out on her time in Morgan’s Grove, Jill needs to decide what “home” really means to her.

My Thoughts...

I love a good small town, sweet contemporary romance story.   Traci Borum wrote exactly what I was looking for.    Jill is an author struggling to find her next story, Rick is a successful man who has realized that being successful is not all that he wants in life.   As their friendship grows, their feelings develop, and they both find what is important to them.

The small town of Morgan Grove is rich in history and full of wonderful citizens.   I love how the citizens were quick to share their stories, tell their histories, and accept Jill into their town.    Morgan Grove is also home to Jill’s ancestors.    She arrives to find out more about her ancestors and learns so much more than she expected.

Love Starts Here is a fun story.  It was easy to read, quick to fall into, and had a story that was perfect for a summer read.

Beth, Portia, and Eddie Morgan haven't all been together in years. And for very good reasons—we'll get to those later. But when their wealthy grandfather dies and leaves a cryptic final message in his wake, the siblings and their respective partners must come together for a cross-country road trip to fulfill his final wish and—more importantly—secure their inheritance.

But time with your family can be tough. It is for everyone.

It's even harder when you're all keeping secrets and trying to forget a memory—a missing person, an act of revenge, the man in the black truck who won't stop following your car—and especially when at least one of you is a killer and there's a body in the trunk. Just to name a few reasons.

But money is a powerful motivator. It is for everyone.

My Thoughts…
What did I read?   It started as a story of 3 siblings along with 2 of their spouses going on a trip across the country while retracing a trip they took with their grandfather years earlier.    Then people were being followed, things went missing, there were deaths, missing people, drugging’s, and so much more.
He Started It is a slow read.   It kept me entertained but it didn’t move at a fast pace.   There was a lot of details to the locations and the reasons for the stops along the way.  The details were all necessary due to the tying together of the two trips.   I was intrigued at the different places they stopped and the memories of what happen at each stop.   The characters all had their own memories of the trip but they came together for a very intriguing story.
The ending… I just don’t even know what to say!   Holy Moly!!!

My Thoughts...

Let me just say the names…Zev Braden and Carly Dylan.    Doesn’t that sound perfect together?   Guess what, they are perfect together.   They’ve been together since they were in elementary school, dated in high school, and then as they grew into young adults and life threw them some curveballs that they didn’t know how to handle so they fell apart.   Yet, their love for each other never left them and when they meet again as adults, with their lives in order, the love they share comes shining through.  Now, I say their love shines through but holy heat!   The sparks were flying when their eyes met across the room and no matter how hard they tried not to recognize what was still between them the heat never let up.

I really enjoyed that they had a happy history together.   That they loved each other and had many happy adventures and memories.  This helped them rebuild their relationship because they had such a strong friendship base.   They did not forget what had happened in the past, but they talked about it, argued about it, and then realized that the past did not have to stop them from finding the happily ever after.

2020 in Review...March 2020 Reviews

A homicide detective’s violent family history repeats itself in #1 Amazon Charts and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Melinda Leigh’s novel of murder, secrets, and retribution.

For more than twenty-five years, Philadelphia homicide detective Bree Taggert has tucked away the nightmarish childhood memories of her parents’ murder-suicide…Until her younger sister, Erin, is killed in a crime that echoes that tragic night: innocent witnesses and a stormy marriage that ended in gunfire. There’s just one chilling difference. Erin’s husband, Justin, has vanished.

Bree knows how explosive the line between love and hate can be, yet the evidence against her troubled brother-in-law isn’t adding up. Teaming up with Justin’s old friend, former sheriff’s investigator and K-9 handler Matt Flynn, Bree vows to uncover the secrets of her sister’s life and death, as she promised Erin’s children. But as her investigation unfolds, the danger hits close to home. Once again, Bree’s family is caught in a death grip. And this time, it could be fatal for her.

My Thoughts…
I am a fan of Melinda Leigh.   With each book, she brings characters to life, a story that I become invested in, and a book that I cannot put down.   Cross Her Heart is the first book in the Bree Taggert series, and I am so excited to read more in this series.
We meet Bree Taggert 25 years after her parent’s murder-suicide.   She gets a call from her sister and heads home to find her sister dead and her brother-in-law missing.  I was so invested in Bree finding Justin not guilty that I had kept turning pages, looking for clues, and hoping for the best for all.   Erin’s children needed Bree to take care of them, Bree needed to find the closure she was looking for, and I needed to know who killed Erin.
The relationship between Bree and Mike was interesting.   I could feel the heat but like that they didn’t let their emotions get in the way of the reason they were working together.   Their focus was on the crime that was committed, and I hope their relationship will just grow naturally as this series continues.
I recommend Melinda Leigh’s Cross Your Heart to anyone looking for a good thriller and mystery book.

Fall in love at Bayside, where sandy beaches, good friends, and true love come together in the sweet small towns of Cape Cod.
Bayside Summers is a series of standalone steamy romance novels featuring alpha male heroes and sexy, empowered women. They're fun, flirty, flawed, deeply emotional, always passionate, and easy to relate to.

Tegan Fine has never had a plan—life, business, or otherwise. But she’s always had goals—to laugh daily and to pay it forward as often as she is able, just like her favorite uncle always did. After inheriting her great-uncle’s amphitheater, Tegan makes a risky move to a charming small town on Cape Cod to carry on her uncle’s legacy and hopefully expand the business with her new friend, Harper. Unfortunately, those goals aren’t doing much to help her plan a business strategy for her new endeavor. With Harper counting on her and her uncle’s legacy at stake, she swears off all distractions, determined to succeed. If only she could stop bumping into a certain arrogant, witty, and excruciatingly hot businessman who tweaks her nerves and invades her every thought. Including her late-night fantasies.

Self-professed workaholic Jett Masters never slows down. He lives life with no attachments—except to his clients, to whom he gives his all. A reluctant trip to his hometown has him itching to shake the ghosts of his past and get back to spinning deals and adding to his investments. But when he comes face-to-face with a gorgeous, handsy woman who is quite possibly the snarkiest and most disorganized person he’s ever met, sparks fly, and his sharp mind stumbles. He doesn’t even know her name, but he can’t get her out of his mind.

A chance encounter turns into a wild, sexy night, and their chemistry is off the charts—even if their ideals, and their lives, are worlds apart. Neither Jett nor Tegan is looking for more. Becoming friends with benefits seems like the perfect solution. But when they are trapped together in torrential weather, they work side by side in the aftermath, and every passionate kiss deepens their connection. Secrets are shared, trust is built, and no promises dare be made. As their lives move on, lines begin to blur, hearts get hurt, and their true selves come into focus. Tegan and Jett are left wondering if they make the perfect storm, or if they’ve reached the end of their bayside fantasy.

**CONTENT WARNING: Due to mature content, recommended for readers aged 18+**

My Thoughts…

I’ve heard about Jett in the previous books in this series.   He is driven, focused, and has a chip on his shoulder that he just cannot shake.    When he met Tegan, the sparks were flying.   Tegan, from the first meeting, kept him on his toes.   She didn’t take his attitude, called him out on his arrogance, and made him take a second look at how he is living his life.    I loved how Tegan kept him guessing, changing his life for the good, and making him work to becoming a better person.

Tegan and Jett were just the couple I was looking for.   They are sweet, they are sexy, and they are so perfect for each other.   Neither person is perfect, but together they make sense.   The wild, crazy, live life to the fullest Tegan takes the orderly, everything has its place Jett and pulls him into a world that he didn’t know he was looking for.    Jett does the exact same for Tegan, helping her organize her business plan for the theatre and finding out what is important in life.

If you are new to Melissa Foster Bayside Fantasies is the perfect place to start enjoying her fun, sexy, and sweet stories.   If you are a fan of Melissa Fosters jump into this book and get caught up with some of your favorite characters while meeting some new ones also.

One car. Two strangers. Infinite possibilities.
Grace Mackie is having the worst day.
Finding out her fiancĂ© only proposed for the sake of a promotion is one thing. But discovering he’d also knocked up his assistant? There’s no coming back from that. Desperate to escape her own destination wedding, she’ll do just about everything to get back home and put the whole mess behind her. Even driving cross-country in a rental car.
Finn Kavanaugh’s day is even worse.
What had started as a brother bonding trip has now left him stranded three thousand miles from home without a car or credit card. Because his brother took off with both. So much for bonding, right? As much as he might want to throttle his brother, he first has to find a way to get home. His only option? A rental car and a cross-country trek.
Neither of them expected their trip would come complete with a surprise passenger. But desperate times and all that.
Warning — This sweet, sexy and laugh out loud funny romance is filled with all the most ridiculous road trip stories you can imagine and sure to drive you crazy with all the feels!

My Thoughts…

Two people stranded with only one rental vehicle for them both to use.   What could go wrong?   What could go right?

Grace and Finn are so opposite each other.   Grace is carefree, looking for fun, and a risk-taker.   Finn plays it safe and doesn’t really want any adventures.    They are made for each other.    Grace pulls Finn out of his shell while Finn pulls Grace back from the edge.   I loved seeing how they complimented each other.   They fought, the enjoyed, and they had adventures.   With each new town, they found something unique to do and saw the sights while learning more about each other and growing their friendship into something more.

Drive Me Crazy is a sweet and sexy story with so many laugh out loud moments.   I enjoyed meeting Finn and Gracie.

Harley
My best friend asked me to be his best man at his destination wedding.

With a demanding and stressful job with NYPD life for me was all work and no play, but a
week-long trip to Hawaii to celebrate Jameson's nuptials sounds like the perfect excuse to get
away.

Leaving work behind wasn't as easy as I thought it would be, though.

That was until she walked up to me at the bar.

After a night of unbridled passion, I discover...she’s the maid of honor in Jameson’s wedding.

Raylynn
My best friend asked me to be her maid of honor at her destination wedding.

After finding my now ex-fiance in a compromising position, escaping to Hawaii is the perfect
excuse to find myself again.

With nothing to lose, I approach the hottest guy in that bar and take a chance on getting my
own groove back.

There's just one hiccup...he's actually the best man in Liv's wedding.

It was only supposed to be a fling, but when returning home leads to chaos and one relocation
to New York, can these two love birds go from fling to forever? Time will tell.

Afterall...425 Madison is the perfect place to fall in love.
My Thoughts…

Nothing to lose for Harley and Raylynn as they hook up in Hawaii not realizing that they were both in Hawaii for the same reason.    A one-night stand turns into more as feelings develop, attraction grows, and their hearts open.

Harley is a tough as nails cop not looking for love or a relationship.   He lives at 425 Madison, of course, and when relocation forces Raylynn to move in across the hall there was no way to avoid seeing her.  They try to stay away, they try to fight their feelings, and they try to keep their relationship easy with no strings.

Love Under Protection is a sweet, sexy, and fun story.   The friendships are real, and the feelings are realistic.   I love this series and the fact that each book is a standalone book, the location is the common thread but the stories are all entirely their own.

My Thoughts…

Audiobook Review…I had just read the ebook format of Searching for Love at the beginning of September 2020 and now it is the end of September 2020 and I have just finished listening to the audiobook format.   Usually, I would say read the book!   Always read the book!   But with this one, I say LISTEN to the book!   The narrators, Virginia Rose and Brian Pallino did a phenomenal job bringing the story to life.   I loved the emotions that they brought to life as they told Zev and Carly’s story.    I found myself walking one more block just to listen to a little more of the story.

eBook Review…Let me just say the names…Zev Braden and Carly Dylan. Doesn’t that sound perfect together? Guess what, they are perfect together. It was like something out of a fairytale…

The grieving widower.
The motherless daughters.
A beautiful house in the woods.
And a nanny come to save the day.

So what if Lexi isn’t telling the truth about who she is? Escaping to the remote snows of Norway was her lifeline. And all she wanted was to be a part of their lives.

But soon, isolated in that cold, creaking house in the middle of ancient, whispering woods, Lexi's fairytale starts to turn into a nightmare.

With darkness creeping in from the outside, Lexi’s fears are deepening. Lexi knows she needs to protect the children in her care.

But protect them from what?

My Thoughts…

C.J. Cooke had me on the edge of my seat while reading The Nesting.    Lexi took a job nannying and now she must protect the children at all costs.   As she starts to hear noises, she sees ghosts that haunt her, and knows secrets that could cause her harm; she knows that nothing else matters but the children in her care do matter.   The Nesting is a thriller with twists and turns that kept me turning pages and hoping that all would end up okay by the end.

The flashback of Tom and Aurelia were sometimes confusing, sometimes added extra detail to the story, and sometimes was so long that I got lost in the text of what I was reading.   I did not feel like the flashbacks were an overall good addition to the story, but I did not let it detour my reading.

Ben
I know why I lost her. I was too serious. I was too practical. I was grounded when I should’ve been dreaming about forever with Jess.

Over time, this wore on her, all her big exciting ideas and all the ways I shut them down. No wonder she handed me my ring back and left town. No wonder she hadn’t been back in ten years. No wonder she’d married someone else, leaving me with memories of sunsets at the beach and the somedays we planned for the future we’d never live.

So, I built a lift without her. My father and I opened the second division of Sunset Builders in New York, and to my surprise, I stayed busy, almost busy enough not to notice the loneliness.

While I was on a job site, my little sister booked an appointment with a woman who lived on Madison Avenue. A quick bathroom and kitchen remodel, she’d said. I should have asked more questions because when I arrived and the door opened memories came flooding back.

Jessica had returned. If I’d learned anything in her absence it was that anything worth doing was worth being done well, and anything worth having was worth fighting for. Maybe by the time the condo was done, Jessica would give me a second chance.

Jessica All those years ago, Ben had been right to try to keep me grounded. I should’ve listened. The falls didn’t hurt as bad that way.

Instead, I wanted a bigger life in a bigger place and I never appreciated the beauty of living in a small town with a huge support system. So, I left town without so much as a goodbye chasing a

silly dream. I alienated myself, moved to a strange city where I knew no one, and chased after something that took me down a dark path.

I married the man who promised me the sun, moon, and stars, but delivered blinding blows. Sometimes, I thought I’d die before I escaped the nightmare. I knew my only way out would be to run...again. This took more years than I could count. Years of me squirreling away money, and years of me hiding in the dark so that no one would see my bruised face in the light of day.

Then my grandfather died. He left me money and a gorgeous condo in New York. While my husband was away on a month-long trip, my best friend drove me to New York. My plan: to upgrade the condo, sell it, and leave my current life behind.

Little did I know when I had called contractors to get some quotes that Ben would show up on my doorstep. He swore we could make more dreams real, but this time I was the grounded one. This time, I could only see how it would never work. I’d made too many mistakes. Love was terrifying. And I never wanted to tie myself to anyone ever again.

After all, 425 Madison is the perfect place to fall in love!

My Thoughts..

Ben and Jessica have history.   Ben never has given up, but Jessica has tried to live her dreams.  A single call to a contractor brings Ben back into Jessica’s live and a second chance seems to be happening.   Their story is not easy or uncomplicated, but it is strong, real, and true.   I loved seeing Ben struggle with whether to open his heart to Jessica again and quickly realizing that it is out of his control.   His heart knows that Jessica is the person for him.   Now to remind Jessica how good they are together and how much they love each other.

Book 21 in a 3 season book series and I am entirely hooked!   The best part, you can read these books in any order!   They are entirely standalone books.   425 Madison is the perfect place to fall in love.

2020 in Reviews...Books I've Reviewed in July 2020

Ariana Costas may be a college professor in Vermont, but she's still a Jersey girl at heart-at least according to her lovable, eccentric Greek family. Then her twin sister, Zoe disappears and her Jersey roots tug hard. Soon Ari is back home, ducking bullets and, to her chagrin, getting rescued by a hunk in a black leather jacket. Detective Quinn Donovan takes one look at the windblown beauty-and then looks again. If this lady isn't Zoe Costas, it's someone who looks exactly like her. Suddenly, Ari's in trouble deeper than the Atlantic at high tide, and Quinn is trying to protect her without spilling his well-guarded secrets ... as déja vu just might become the love affair of a lifetime.

My Thoughts...

Ariana is a woman running from her own family, a family that she loves but is not always proud to be part of.    She has moved to Vermont to escape them until her twin is missing and assumed dead.    I enjoyed seeing her come home and see her family in a new light.  Sure, they are crazy with their monkey as a pet, crazy con jobs, but there is no doubt that they love each other.    As the story continues, Ariana realizes that she has missed her family but cannot make any life changing decisions until she finds out the truth about her sister.

As Ariana is trying to figure out what happened to Zoe, she meets Quinn and the sparks fly.   Their relationship was fun and complex.  Quinn was keeping secrets from Ariana all while trying to keep Zoe safe.   Ariana and Quinn circled each other, kept their feelings close to themselves, and were trying to not fall for each other.   I genuinely enjoyed seeing these two get to know each other and fall for each other.

Zoe Costas is a security specialist and a Costas through and through. Her eccentric, rather dubious family runs an Atlantic City spa that's just this side of legit. So Zoe isn't inclined to trust handsome, charming Ryan Baldwin when he shows up claiming to be related to Sam, the girl the Costas family is about to adopt. But Ryan is Sam's uncle and one of the famously rich and snooty Boston Baldwins.

Ryan's search for his sister has led him to news of her death, and to a niece he's never met. But someone else has also tracked Sam down — someone who never wanted the child to be found. Ryan is determined to protect Sam and find out what really happened to his sister. And Zoe is just the woman to help him do it. Neither expects to lose their heart in the process.

My Thoughts...

I read Under the Boardwalk, the first Costas Sisters book, and wondered about what Zoe’s story would be.    Would she be tough?  Would she be open to love?   Had I already met the man that would win her heart?    I had so many questions that I needed answers to.   Summer of Love gave me all the answers plus it let me get to know Sam, the foster sister, and learn more about her story.

Zoe is tough as nails; she loves her family and will do anything to protect them including her foster sister Sam.    When Sam’s uncle shows up at their house she steps in and keeps his true identity a secret.    They play the game of him being a social worker and checking on Sam’s well being all while he starts to get to know the niece he never knew.   I liked how Ryan played along with Zoe, he realized that Sam was safe and loved and that coming into her life would only disrupt it so he had to be careful.   Ryan won me over with the care and respect that he showed the Costa’s family.

During Ryan and Zoe’s care of Sam they developed feelings, circled around each other, and learned to open their hearts.   Zoe was careful and held back from giving her heart easily and Ryan knew that he had to be careful.   The relationship between the two of them was sweet, fun, and steamy.    It was fun.

In this charming and poignant novel, teenager Emmie Blue releases a balloon with her email address and a big secret into the sky, only to fall head-over-heels for the boy who finds it; now, fourteen years later, the one thing Emmie has been counting on is gone for good, and everything she planned is up in the air.

At sixteen, Emmie Blue stood in the fields of her school and released a red balloon into the sky. Attached was her name, her email address…and a secret she desperately wanted to be free of. Weeks later, on a beach in France, Lucas Moreau discovered the balloon and immediately emailed the attached addressed, sparking an intense friendship between the two teens.

Now, fourteen years later, Emmie is hiding the fact that she’s desperately in love with Lucas. She has pinned all her hopes on him and waits patiently for him to finally admit that she’s the one for him. So dedicated to her love for Lucas, Emmie has all but neglected her life outside of this relationship—she’s given up the search for her absentee father, no longer tries to build bridges with her distant mother, and lives as a lodger to an old lady she barely knows after being laid off from her job. And when Lucas tells Emmie he has a big question to ask her, she’s convinced this is the moment he’ll reveal his feelings for her. But nothing in life ever quite goes as planned, does it?

Emmie Blue is about to learn everything she thinks she knows about life (and love) is just that: what she thinks she knows. Is there such thing as meant to be? Or is it true when they say that life is what happens when you are busy making other plans? A story filled with heart and humor, Dear Emmie Blue is perfect for fans of Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine and Evvie Drake Starts Over

My Thoughts...

Emmie “meets” Lucas when her red balloon is let go with a message inside and finds it sends her a response to her message and becomes her savior.   Lucas becomes the friend that she desperately needed at age 16 and continues that friendship as they celebrate birthdays, holidays, and now a wedding.    The two of them share secrets, share dreams, share heartaches, and share their lives.

I read this story as we were traveling to visit my daughter’s college town.  In a car, on a highway, in the rain and I noticed almost nothing.   I could not stop reading Dear Emmie Blue.  I was invested in the marvelous storyline and I was intrigued by the fun characters.  My heart broke as Emmie’s was broken also.   My hopes soared as I realized that there was much more to Eliot, Lucas’ brother than I originally thought. I could not get enough of this book.   Dear Emmie Blue was the perfect book to devour on a car ride.

A wealthy woman suspects something is off about the luxurious complex she lives in . . . and she is right, in this riveting domestic-suspense novel from international bestselling author Alexandra Burt.

Donna Pryor lives in the lap of luxury. She spends her days in a beautifully appointed condo. Her every whim is catered to by a dedicated staff, and she does not want for anything.

Except for news of her adult daughter.

Or an ex-husband who takes her calls.

Donna knows something is wrong, but she can't quite put her finger on it. As her life of privilege starts to feel more and more like a prison, the facade she has depended on begins to crumble. Somewhere in the ruins is the truth, and the closer Donna Pryor gets to it, the more likely it is to destroy her.

My Thoughts...

Umm... hello!   What a ride I just went on.   There were times I had no idea where I was heading or where I would end up but I loved every minute of the ride.     There was no doubt that there was something going on with Donna but I couldn’t be sure what that was.    She seemed to know what was going on, she seemed to understand life, and she seemed to want to find new happiness but she first had to figure out what got her to where she is right now.

Shadow Garden is an amazing story.    Alexandra Burt did a wonderful job of making her characters realistic and not always likable.   The story itself was intriguing and kept me guessing at what would happen next.   This is the first book I have read by Alexandra but I will be looking for much more in the future from her.
