Book Review for Stolen in Death by J.D. Robb

In Death #62

Stolen in Death by J.D. Robb

Published:  February 3, 2026 by St. Martin's Press

Genre:  Romantic Suspense, Mystery Thriller

Taken from Goodreads:  A violent death and a vault of stolen treasures has Eve Dallas struggling to solve crimes old and new in the latest thriller in the #1 New York Times-bestselling series.

A blow to the head with a block of amethyst has left multibillionaire Nathan Barrister dead―while nearby, a vault, its door ajar, sits filled with priceless paintings, jewelry, and other treasures. Lieutenant Eve Dallas’s husband, Roarke―who misspent his youth in Ireland as a scrappy thief―recognizes at least two stolen pieces among the hoard. The crime scene suggests a burglar caught in the act. But only one item seems to be missing.

Then it’s revealed that the vault had actually belonged to the victim’s late father―and no one in the household knew it was there until a recent remodeling project exposed it. To protect the family name and business, they explain to Eve, they’d been looking for a way to return the ill-gotten gains anonymously and avoid the police. But now the police are all over their elegant house, and have a bigger, bloodier mystery to solve.

By all accounts, Nathan Barrister was a good man, a generous employer, a devoted husband and father. As for his father―he clearly had secrets. Now it’s up to Eve and her team to find out if those secrets got Nathan killed―and if it was a crime of passion or revenge.

My Thoughts:  I am a fan of J.D. Robb.  I have read most of the In Death series and enjoy them all.   Stolen in Death is #62 in the series.   I like that the characters are familiar, it is like visiting old friends each time I pick up the next book in this series.   Eve and Roarke have an amazing relationship.  Their friends are unique and keep the storyline interesting.

Stolen in Death is not my favorite.   I felt like the story moved a little slower than some of the other books.  There was not as much social time for Eve and Roarke with their friends as with other books.  With the lack of that time, the entire book concentrated on the murder and solving it.   I felt it was a little repetitive.  The same theories were repeated over and over without moving forward in the solving.   There were areas of the book that I felt were just filling pages to make the word count.

If you are a fan of J.D. Robb I would recommend you pick up this book.   It is always enjoyable to catch up with Eve and Roarke.

Thank you St. Martin’s Press for a copy of the book via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

Meet the Author (taken from her website):  With a phenomenal career full of bestsellers, Nora Roberts was ready for a new writing challenge. As her agent put it, like Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, and caffeine-free Pepsi, a pseudonym offered her the opportunity to reach a new and different group of readers. The first futuristic suspense J. D. Robb book, Naked in Death, was published in paperback in 1995, and readers were immediately drawn to Eve Dallas, a tough cop with a dark past, and her even more mysterious love interest, Roarke.

The series quickly gained attention, great reviews, and devoted readers. Since the debut of Loyalty in Death (the ninth In Death book) on Halloween 1999 on the New York Times bestseller list, every J. D. Robb title has been a New York Times bestseller. While fans had their suspicions, it wasn’t until the twelfth book in the series, Betrayal in Death (2001), that the publisher fully revealed that J. D. Robb was a pseudonym for bestselling powerhouse Nora Roberts. Unmasked, Nora Roberts fans who hadn’t yet picked up one of the Robb books were quickly playing catch-up.

Robb’s peers in the mystery world are fans as well, with accolades for the In Death series from such blockbuster authors as Stephen King, Jonathan Kellerman, Dennis Lehane, Kathy Reichs, Lisa Scottoline, Janet Evanovich, David Baldacci, Harlan Coben, Robert B. Parker, Ridley Pearson, Linda Fairstein, and Andrew Gross.

The In Death books are perpetual bestsellers, and frequently share the bestseller list with other Nora Roberts novels. J. D. Robb publishes two hardcover In Death books per year, with the occasional stand-alone original In Death story featured in an anthology.

Spotlight for Books & Bewitchment by Isla Jewell

Arcadia Falls

Books & Bewitchment by Isla Jewell

Published:   February 3, 2026 by Del Rey

Genre:  Romance, Fantasy, Paranormal, Witches

Taken from Goodreads:  In this cozy, witchy romcom, a young woman works to turn a run-down small-town video store into the bookshop of her dreams, only to discover a powerful magic that’s been lying dormant—and a forbidden love she can’t resist.

Dutiful and hard-working, Rhea Wolfe lives a simple, mundane life with her pet parrot in small-town Alabama. Sure, she may not love her desk job working for an insurance agency. And her on-again-off-again relationship with the local mechanic may not have the fiery passion she’s read about in her favorite books. Still, things are stable, which is more than she can say about the two hopelessly immature younger sisters who rely on her.

But when Rhea’s estranged grandmother dies, leaving her everything—including a magical heritage Rhea never knew she carried—she finds herself in Arcadia Falls, the quaint mountain town her mother made her swear to avoid at all costs. While the defunct business she’s also inherited needs a serious upgrade, Rhea’s lucky that resident handyman Hunter Blakely is more than happy to help—and more than easy on the eyes. If only he wasn’t the grandson of her grandmother’s sworn enemy in witchcraft.

As Rhea works to build a future, strange occurrences begin to make her think someone—or something—is trying to drive her out. As she gets closer to solving the mystery, each clue she uncovers points to Arcadia Falls’s magic hanging in the balance. To keep her new home safe, Rhea must step into her enchanted birthright . . . before it’s too late.

Book Review for We Were Never Friends by Kaira Rouda

We Were Never Friends by Kaira Rouda

Published:  February 3, 2026 by Poisoned Pen Press

Genre:  Thriller, Mystery, Suspense

Taken from Goodreads:  Sisters? Forever. Friends? NEVER. Who knew a reunion weekend could be so deadly?

Meet the sorority sisters of Theta Gamma

Roxy Callahan Gentry, the ruthless former sorority president and current hostess who has painstakingly choreographed every detail of this weekend—even matching the cocktails to her couture—to prove that she remains their undisputed queen Amelia Dell, the widow drenched in old money and alcohol, with her big pot-stirring spoon and uninvited boy-toy in tow Jamie Vale, the double-legacy pledge, straight-A student with no sparkle, now a top cardiologist with a picture-perfect family—and a well-guarded bad habit Beth Harrison, the scholarship student who never quite fit in and was only admitted because her best friend Sunny insisted that the two were a package deal Sunny Spencer, the carefree and beloved friend to all, or so it seemed—until she wasn't. They've been summoned to Roxy's luxurious Palm Springs vacation home to celebrate the engagement of her son to Beth's daughter. But the refurbished 1920s estate is eerily reminiscent of the hotel where tragedy struck during Spring Break twenty-five years ago. Long-simmering tensions and shocking secrets begin bubbling to the surface like bodies—because while the weekend was supposed to be about celebrating the future, it's not so easy to bury the past…

My Thoughts:  This book was the perfect sorority sisters get together and all goes wrong book.   The friendships are never ending but the cattiness is still there.   These sisters have so many secrets.  Some of the secrets bind them together as a group but even more the secrets could bring them all down.

With every turn of the page, there was another gasp of surprise from me.  I thought how much trouble can these ladies have caused as college students?  The answer, more than you would think.   While it all seemed too much at times, the story is very entertaining.   I looked forward to every moment that I had to read this book and was invested in how it ended.

Guest Post from Kelli A. Wilkins, Mystery and Horror Author

Celebrate Women in Horror Month with The Route 9 Killer

By Kelli A. Wilkins

www.KelliWilkins.com

Hi everyone!

February is “Women in Horror” month, and horror is one of my favorite genres. I love scaring (or at least unnerving) readers with my horror fiction. But sometimes horror stories don’t feature “traditional monsters” like vampires or werewolves… sometimes human beings are capable of terrifying us more than any ghost ever could.

The Route 9 Killer is one of those stories. It’s a bit dark… but then again, how could a story about a serial killer not be?

Years ago, I had an idea for a serial killer/mystery/thriller story that was sparked by something simple: I was driving somewhere and saw a woman’s shoe lying in the road.

Immediately, my writer brain started asking questions: Whose shoe was it? What happened to the woman? Where was the other shoe? Why was this shoe in the road? Strange? Yes. But writers think that way. Anything that catches our attention can spark a flurry of questions and develop into a story idea.

I started wondering about the shoe and then an idea hit me. It was a simple “What if…” premise: What if a woman was abducted and the only evidence left behind was her shoe in the road? I bounced this idea off of a few people, and they scoffed. “Who cares about a shoe? Why would anything think someone was abducted based on a shoe?” But, when I explained my story idea, they were intrigued.

I wrote an outline for the story and filed it in my “someday I’ll write this” folder and moved on to other projects. (At the time, I was writing romances and not focusing on horror/mysteries.) Then “someday” arrived and I wrote the story.

As the title implies, the book is a mystery/thriller involving a serial killer. The hero, Detective Jim Rourke, thinks he’s discovered a serial killer operating in Central New Jersey. The only problem is, nobody believes him. The women are abducted from different towns in the same county and their bodies are dumped in different towns in another county. This makes it hard for the police to connect the crimes or even see a pattern. To them, the killings are random.

Detective Rourke is also investigating the disappearance of a woman named Allison Kendrick. When the book opens, her boyfriend is at the police station, reporting her missing. Are the two cases related? Rourke thinks they might be.

The book then switches to the point-of-view of a young woman who wakes up in a strange place, handcuffed to a bed. When I wrote her character, I knew didn’t want to make her a helpless victim. Yes, she’s hurting, scared, and in a really, really bad situation, but she’s smart and a fighter—and determined to escape. She knows she’s responsible for her own fate. Nobody is coming to rescue her.

No thriller would be complete without a peek into the life (and mind) of the antagonist. Our not-so-nice killer has a few scenes of his own where we get inside his mind, see what makes him lose control, and gives a hint at why he does what he does.

Without giving away any plot details or spoilers, I can say that our three main characters come together in the end, and the story packs a great twist ending. (If you’ve read the book and loved it, please post a positive review online (no spoilers, please!).

But then… there’s the Epilogue, where we get a little more info on Rourke’s case—and another shocker.

Although the story has a very serious/dark subject matter, I stayed away from overt sexual violence toward our heroine. I didn’t want to write anything too dark, too graphic, and nothing along the lines of “torture porn” or an unsettling episode of Criminal Minds. I concentrated on Rourke and his investigation. The other characters are there to pull the reader into the story through their points-of-view and increase the drama and tension. I think it worked. (Readers and reviewers seem to agree, too!)

And just in time for Women in Horror Month, I released a new mystery/thriller featuring Detective Jim Rourke, The Route 9 Stalker. (I’ll be blogging more about that book soon, but you can read about it here: https://www.kelliwilkins.com/horror/the-route-9-stalker.)

Here’s the book summary and order links for:

The Route 9 Killer

(A Mystery/Thriller)

It started with a search for a missing woman — and turned into a hunt for a serial killer.

Early one morning, a distraught young man enters a police station and reports that his girlfriend disappeared on a deserted stretch of road the night before.

With no witnesses and no leads, it falls to Detective Jim Rourke to find out the truth — and Rourke’s investigation leads him to believe that Allison Kendrick might have fallen into the clutches of a serial killer.

Several other missing women have turned up dead — tortured and dumped along secluded sections of Route 9. Rourke is alone on a manhunt, and time is running out.

Can Rourke catch the killer and rescue the next victim before it’s too late?

Book Amplifier Tour with a Q&A for Winter's Season by R.J. Koreto

Winter's Season by R.J. Koreto

Published: February 17, 2026 by Histria Fiction

In Winter’s Season, R.J. Koreto centers the story on Captain Winter, a former soldier whose postwar life is defined by duty rather than peace. His work requires him to move quietly through spaces where influence is subtle, danger is constant, and justice has no formal structure.

Set in London in 1817, the story opens in a city rebuilding after war while clinging fiercely to its hierarchies. When a young woman is murdered in a notorious district, Captain Winter is tasked with uncovering the truth without drawing attention to those who would rather see the matter disappear. His role as Whitehall’s “special emissary” places him between privilege and violence, where discretion matters more than certainty.

Progress depends on fragile alliances. A nobleman connected to Winter’s past opens doors closed to most, while a wise Jewish physician offers insight that challenges accepted narratives. The return of Barbara Lightwood, a former lover whose intelligence and social fluency give her access to sensitive information, complicates the investigation. Her guarded cooperation forces Winter to weigh personal history against professional duty.

As the case deepens, Winter is pushed to confront the limits of justice in a city determined to protect its own.

Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/235788930-winter-s-season

Q&A:

What sets your book apart from others in your genre?

In Winter's Season, both the actual mystery and the relationships between the characters tightly relate to the rigid social structure of the day. What kinds of behavior were acceptable from the nobility as opposed to the commoners? What could men do that women couldn't—and vice versa? Those all deeply affect the investigations. Captain Winter, my protagonist, is a rare figure who doesn't belong to any class—or perhaps he belongs to all of them! Unmoored, he tries to find his place in the world as he tracks down a killer.

What’s your favorite compliment you’ve received as a writer?

I wrote a series of books about Lady Frances Ffolkes, a spirited and unconventional suffragette in Edwardian England who finds the time to become an amateur detective. A reader wrote to me: "I wish Lady Frances was real so she could be my friend." That something liked my character so much!

Why did you choose this setting/topic?

I read Pride & Prejudice with a professor who had done her dissertation on Jane Austen. She stressed one line in particular, about the deceitful Mr. Wickham: he "wanted only regimentals to make him completely charming." That stayed with me for a long time! All the details that make up how we are seen—so essential in that time period. My protagonist, Regency-era Captain Winter, is a very different man from Wickham, but he also finds that uniforms cover a lot. And clothing aside, behavior remains behavior. Jane Austen's characters realize that—and so do mine!

Which author(s) most inspired you?

For the nuts and bolts of assembling a mystery, no one beats Agatha Christie. She wrote the book…on how to write the book! When it comes to setting a scene, I go with Georges Simenon's Maigret novels. I could read them only in translation, but I still found his ability to set a mood, to set a scene with memorable characters, remains unparalleled. For dialog, I love Ngaio Marsh's Nero Wolfe tales. It's a goal of mine to create as lively exchanges as Archie Goodwin has with his boss.

And number one for me is John le Carre. Most people are surprised to hear this, because I don't write spy thrillers. But I remain amazed at his ability to explore the complexities of love and hate, of loyalty and betrayal, and so much more. His themes are both peculiar to the Cold War and universal. That is ultimately what I want to achieve, to bring home the same thematic power—and subtlety—as Le Carre.

Book Blitz for The Rewrite by Beth Rinyu with a GIVEAWAY

The Rewrite
Beth Rinyu
Publication date: January 29th 2026
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Contemporary, Romance

How long would you hold a grudge?

If you’re Eloise Hendrickson, the answer is twenty-five years. After being humiliated by her overseas pen pal in seventh grade, Eloise, now a successful writer, has never quite let go of that one mortifying moment. One bad breakup, a late night of drunken internet sleuthing, and a half-baked excuse to bust through writer’s block send her straight into the path of the boy she’s hated her whole life.

Her plan? Turn him into the villain of her next novel.
The plot twist? He’s not the jerk she remembers.

Instead, he’s a charming chocolatier, a devoted family man, and awkwardly, a huge fan of her books. But as Eloise reconnects with the past, it’s not him who captures her attention, it’s someone else entirely. Someone unexpected. He’s rude, infuriating, and gets under her skin like no one else. He’s the exact opposite of the heroes she creates and the men she dates.

With new friends, a fresh perspective, and possibly the beginnings of something romantic—Eloise must decide if she’s finally ready to let go of the perfection she’s always demanded from herself as well as everyone around her, and embrace the unpredictable, wonderfully flawed life waiting for her. Maybe her next bestseller won’t be about righting the past after all. Maybe it will be about rewriting the future instead.

Warning: This book may contain chocolate and possibly a happily ever after.

EXCERPT:

“Okay, so if booty calls are off the table. What about a friendship? Seeing he’s such a decent guy? You’re a lonely woman in a strange country. He’s an available strapping man. Maybe it would be nice to have someone just to hang out with. I mean… not someone like you and me someone. Let’s face it, I’m irreplaceable.”

“No,” I cut in. “Like I said, he’s nice. For someone else. Whether it’s sex or friendship, I’m not interested. And for the record, I’m not lonely.”

“Yes, yes, how could I forget, your social circle now includes preteens and senior citizens.”

“I happen to like my new friends, both young and old.”

“Ella, honey.” Charlie gave me that look that was equal parts exasperated and concerned. “All I’m saying is, maybe this is your moment to let your hair down a little. You’re always so tightly wound, and this breakup didn’t exactly loosen the screws. Maybe it’s time to expand your horizons. Try something different. Someone different. Maybe this guy is the kind of non-Kent energy you need.”

“Okay, when did you get a PHD in Psychology?” I snapped.

“Reading radar maps and reading the human psyche are kind of the same thing. Both are temperamental and can change in a heartbeat,” he teased.

“Charlie, I love and appreciate you, but stick to doing the weather. You’re much better at that!”

“One last question, and then I promise I’ll ixnay the subject.” “What?” I didn’t even try to hide my annoyance.

“Do you call him Mr. Moreau or Grace’s daddy?”

“Goodbye, Charlie!” I blew him a kiss and disconnected our call.

Author Bio:

I've always had a passion for Creative Writing. There's something special about being able to travel to a different place or become a different person with just the stroke of a pen—or in today's world, a tap of the keyboard. Maybe it all started with the soap opera-level drama I used to script for my Barbie dolls. Plot twists, emotional arcs, surprise twins... it was basically a writer’s room before I even knew what one was. Whatever the spark, storytelling quickly became my favorite creative outlet. I craft stories that keep me on my toes and constantly push me beyond my comfort zone. Deep characters you either root for or love to hate are the ones I’m most drawn to.

Exploring new places helps me uncover fresh and exciting settings for my books, but there’s nothing quite like a quiet walk in the woods or sitting by the ocean close to home. Turns out, plot twists and inspiration arrive just as easily with a sea breeze—or a few curious squirrels.
