Review for Once Upon a Sunset by Tif Marcelo

Once Upon a Sunset
by

publication: March 3rd 2020 by Gallery Books

From Goodreads:    The author of The Key to Happily Ever After—“a true gem filled with heart, laughs, and a cast of delightful characters” (Nina Bocci, USA TODAY bestselling author)—returns with a heartwarming and charming novel about a woman who travels to the Philippines to reconnect with her long-lost family…and manages to find herself along the way.

Diana Gallagher-Cary is at a tipping point. As a Washington, DC, OB/GYN at a prestigious hospital, she uses her career to distract herself from her grief over her granny’s death and her breakup from her long-term boyfriend after her free-spirited mother moves in with her. But when she makes a medical decision that disparages the hospital, she is forced to go on a short sabbatical.

Never one to wallow, Diana decides to use the break to put order in her life, when her mother, Margo, stumbles upon a box of letters from her grandfather, Antonio Cruz, to her grandmother from the 1940s. The two women always believed that Antonio died in World War II, but the letters reveal otherwise. When they learn that he lived through the war, and that they have surviving relatives in the Philippines, Diana becomes determined to connect with the family that she never knew existed, though Margo refuses to face her history. But Diana pushes on, and heads on a once-in-a-lifetime trip that challenges her identity, family history, and her idea of romantic love that could change her life forever.

Infused with Tif Marcelo’s signature “sexy, adorable, and heartfelt” (Kate Meader, USA TODAY bestselling author) voice, Once Upon a Sunset is a moving and lyrical celebration of love, family, and second chances.

My Thoughts…

Two strong, independent, successful women have their lives turned upside down and travel to the Philippines with the hopes of finding relatives that they never knew they had.    Diana and Margo have a wonderful and realistic daughter/mother relationship.   While Diana works as an OBGYN, coming home to her dog and a house under renovations, Margo is retired and has many followers on Instagram.    They live together, argue like mother/daughters do, but they also support and love each other without any questions.
As Diana follows her heart and tries to learn more about a grandfather she never knew she ends up learning more about herself.   She opens herself up to new adventures, new family members, and new relationships.   Diana doesn’t push the friends she has away, she instead embraces their support and looks to them for advice as she moves forward in her life.   I am in awe of how strong she is, even when she is stumbling, and how much she is willing to push herself out of her comfort zone to find the answers that she really wants.

Margo is more cautious.   While she lives a fun retired lifestyle, she is cautious about opening up a history that is not what she expected or was told.    She is not sure that knowing about her father, who she was told died long before he did, is something that she is willing to open her heart to.   Her amazing friends, who are working on their combined bucket-list, support her and push her to find out about her past and be there for her daughter.
Once Upon a Sunset is the second book by Tif Marcelo that I have read and I am excited to see what she writes next.   With each of her books I have met amazing characters, been introduced to wonderful settings, and read a perfect story.

Feature for Far Away Bird by Douglas A. Burton

Far Away Bird - by Douglas A. Burton

Inspired by true events (historical fiction), Far Away Bird delves into the complex mind of Byzantine Empress Theodora. This intimate account deftly follows her rise from actress-prostitute in Constantinople's red-light district to the throne of the Byzantine Empire.

Her salacious past has left historians blushing and uncomfortable. Tales of her shamelessness have survived for centuries, and yet her accomplishments as an empress are unparalleled. Theodora goes on to influence sweeping reforms that result in some of the first-ever Western laws granting women freedom and protection. More than a millennium before the women's rights movement, Theodora, alone, took on a world superpower and succeeded. Far Away Bird goes where history classrooms fear to tread in hopes that Theodora can finally take her seat among the greatest women in history.

Theodora seems impossible--yet her transcendence teaches us that society can't tell us who we are deep down. Before there was a legendary empress, there was a conflicted young woman from the lower classes.

Meet the Author

Douglas Alan Burton’s work depicts heroic figures and their deeper connection to the human experience. Douglas’ blog readers enjoy his commentary about heroes, heroines, and villains in pop culture with an unexpected and refreshing perspective. He grew up in what he describes as “the heroic boyhood culture of late Generation X” that has gone mainstream around the world. He also shares strategies with fellow writers for writing compelling heroic characters in fiction.

Douglas recently began outlining a breakthrough storytelling model that reveals a fascinating “heroine-centric” model for story structure he calls “The Heroine’s Labyrinth.” He believes the heroine is a powerful archetype that has widespread cultural significance and deserves more attention. He lives in Austin, Texas with his wife and two little boys.

Exclusive Excerpt:

The king’s hands threaded under her arms and, with little effort, pulled her to her feet. And then he pressed his mouth to Shayla’s. Her mind erupted into a cacophony of joyous confusion. She’d been specifically told there would be no kissing. The king did not kiss. But, holy hell! Did the king ever kiss. His large frame bent down over her, surrounding her in his heat. His full lips sucked and pulled at hers and his tongue demanded entrance and exploration, which she freely granted. His hard muscles bunched and thrummed around her, setting her body on fire everywhere they touched. The scent of powerful masculinity filled her nose, and the exquisite flavor of his tongue in her mouth intoxicated her. And, oh God, every time she felt the passing hardness of his fangs as they kissed made her whimper and moan. Her body readied itself immediately for his, moistening, opening. Having shielded herself from physical relationships, she was astounded to learn her body had the ability to produce this crazy, urgent euphoria. Her brain scrambled to process each new, maddening sensation. In that moment, she would’ve done anything to maintain the feeling. Was it always like this? Kael growled low in his chest as his mouth came at her again and again, and Shayla felt the vibration of the feral sound against her breasts. She squeezed her thighs together, seeking friction to satisfy even a little of her now uncontrollable lust. Her mouth was so filled with his probing tongue it was difficult to get enough oxygen, but his kisses convinced her she could live without it as long as he continued to devour her so intensely. Never had she imagined the expression of physical love could make her feel so wanted, so needed. His obvious pleasure throbbed against her stomach and flooded her with unbelievable feelings of power, and just a little fear. Because they were off the grid now, outside the bounds of the rules and expectations she’d been taught during her training. And she was thrilled it might mean he was as affected by her as she was by him. Wherever the king was leading them, she was only too happy to follow. In truth, she felt powerless to do otherwise. A sharp, piercing sensation nicked the edge of her tongue. Kael groaned and she gasped into his mouth. He bit me! They said he wouldn’t— All thinking abruptly halted as he sucked on her tongue and fed. She could feel the pulling flow of her blood. It was an electric rush that set her body on fire. As if she didn’t already burn for him. As if she wasn’t already wet for him. From just their first kiss…

Paperback Release for My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing

I am so excited to share that Samantha Downing's
My Lovely Wife is being released with a new dark cover
as a paperback.
In 2019 I read this amazing book and love the new cover.

Expected publication: publication: March 3rd 2020 by Berkley Books

Dexter meets Mr. and Mrs. Smith in this wildly compulsive debut thriller about a couple whose fifteen-year marriage has finally gotten too interesting...

Our love story is simple. I met a gorgeous woman. We fell in love. We had kids. We moved to the suburbs. We told each other our biggest dreams, and our darkest secrets. And then we got bored.

We look like a normal couple. We're your neighbors, the parents of your kid's friend, the acquaintances you keep meaning to get dinner with.

We all have secrets to keeping a marriage alive.

Ours just happens to be getting away with murder.

My Thoughts…

I started this book with doubts about both the main characters.    Husband and wife, they just seemed odd.   As I kept reading I realized how incredibly odd and scary they both were.   While this could have been a stop, put this book down thought it was more of an Oh My Gosh, what are they going to do next?

I knew the other shoe was going to drop, I knew that there was going to be that moment when the story shifted, and I was so looking forward to it.    When the story changed paths, I was let down.    I needed more; I wanted a more climatic event then what happens.   I needed it to be as dramatic as the rest of the story was and it just didn’t happen that way.

My Lovely Wife is a thriller, it is psychotic, and it is enthralling.   I was pulled in and I couldn’t stop reading until I reached the end. I needed to know that the children in the book are safe and that the right people were held responsible for what was happening.

Review for The Yellow Bird Sings by Jennifer Rosner

The Yellow Bird Sings
by

Published March 3, 2020 by Picador

In Poland, as World War II rages, a mother hides with her young daughter, a musical prodigy whose slightest sound may cost them their lives.

As Nazi soldiers round up the Jews in their town, Róża and her 5-year-old daughter, Shira, flee, seeking shelter in a neighbor’s barn. Hidden in the hayloft day and night, Shira struggles to stay still and quiet, as music pulses through her and the farmyard outside beckons. To soothe her daughter and pass the time, Róża tells her a story about a girl in an enchanted garden:

The girl is forbidden from making a sound, so the yellow bird sings. He sings whatever the girl composes in her head: high-pitched trills of piccolo; low-throated growls of contrabassoon. Music helps the flowers bloom.

In this make-believe world, Róża can shield Shira from the horrors that surround them. But the day comes when their haven is no longer safe, and Róża must make an impossible choice: whether to keep Shira by her side or give her the chance to survive apart.

Inspired by the true stories of Jewish children hidden during World War II, Jennifer Rosner’s debut is a breathtaking novel about the unbreakable bond between a mother and a daughter. Beautiful and riveting, The Yellow Bird Sings is a testament to the triumph of hope—a whispered story, a bird’s song—in even the darkest of times.

My Thoughts…

I cannot even imagine having to hide yourself and your young daughter from the horrors of war.    Roza is that mother, she must protect Shira with all that she has and keep her safe from what would be a horrific death if the Nazi’s found her.     As the war continues, their safety is put at risk and a decision to let Shira go with another woman to keep her safe must be made.   My heart broke, I had tears at Roza letting her daughter go but also at what Roza must now endure to keep herself safe so that she can find her way back to her daughter.

I have read many books set during WWII.   I enjoy finding new views, new stories to learn, and new characters to feel for.   Roza and Shira are mother and daughter.   They struggle during the war together and apart, the keep the hope alive that they will find each other again, and they both manage to find a life to live after the war is over.

Paperback Available for Who Slays the Wicked by C.S. Harris

In April 2019 I reviewed Who Slays the Wicked by C.S. Harris.   Today we are celebrating that the book is now available in paperback.

Kindle Edition, 352 pages
Expected publication: April 2nd 2019 by Berkley

The death of a fiendish nobleman strikes close to home as Sebastian St. Cyr is tasked with finding the killer to save his young cousin from persecution in this riveting new historical mystery from the USA Today bestselling author of Why Kill the Innocent....

When the handsome but dissolute young gentleman Lord Ashworth is found brutally murdered, Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, is called in by Bow Street magistrate Sir Henry Lovejoy to help catch the killer. Just seven months before, Sebastian had suspected Ashworth of aiding one of his longtime friends and companions in the kidnapping and murder of a string of vulnerable street children. But Sebastian was never able to prove Ashworth's complicity. Nor was he able to prevent his troubled, headstrong young niece Stephanie from entering into a disastrous marriage with the dangerous nobleman.

Stephanie has survived the difficult birth of twin sons. But Sebastian soon discovers that her marriage has quickly degenerated into a sham. Ashworth abandoned his pregnant bride at his father's Park Street mansion and has continued living an essentially bachelor existence. And mounting evidence--ranging from a small bloody handprint to a woman's silk stocking--suggests that Ashworth's killer was a woman. Sebastian is tasked with unraveling the shocking nest of secrets surrounding Ashworth's life to keep Stephanie from being punished for his death.

My Thoughts…

Sebastian St. Cyr is called in to investigate a murder.   The murder of a man that very few liked and most are happy that he is dead.     Of course, that leads to many suspects, many false leads, and a lot of clues that seem to lead to dead ends.    I tried to follow the clues and come up with the who done it before I reached the end, I had so many guesses, but I was so wrong.    I was so far off the right path.    I enjoyed every wrong turn that I took.

C.S Harris knows exactly how to write a historical mystery that pulls the reader in, leads them through history, and takes them on a tour of the city.   The settings come to life, the people become real, and the story is not just something to read it is something that you cannot put down.    I have become a fan of the Sebastian St. Cyr series after only reading this one and the one prior to this.

Blurb: Lucas Xavier is the last person I want to spend 24 hours with, let alone two minutes. Exes are exes for a reason. In his case, for a million reasons. Because he's not only an ex-lover, he's also an ex-friend. We didn't just break up - we combusted in a spectacular bonfire of barbs and doors slammed.
Nothing will change that. Not his clever wit, not his ridiculous good looks, not his unfair levels of charm. And definitely not a wild dash through the city that takes us on an accidental scavenger hunt through our past, where we stop for a tango lesson, pancakes and a visit with some llamas.
And certainly not time together to make amends and say we're sorry.
But, let's say that was enough...it's not like you can fall in love in 24 hours.
Indulge in the BOYFRIEND MATERIAL series! Three best friends. Three outrageous proposals. Three chances to fall in love.

Guest Post from Kay Hutchison Author of My Life in 37 Therapies

Kay Hutchison - Author, My Life in 37 Therapies
Topic - The first line of my book and what you need to know
366 Words

I’m sitting in a field of wild lupins. I’m six years old.

Although the book is about my mid-life crisis and how I sought help through 37 therapies - some funny, some bizarre - the personal story of my childhood and upbringing is a constant, underlying theme.

The first line is about a seemingly insignificant episode when I was chased by my older brother and his friend within the grounds of the Masonic Lodge. They made ‘spears’ from wild lupins, stripping off the leaves and launching them at me, laughing as they ran. I hid, crouched down, deep within the field of lupins, silent, motionless, praying they’d move on.

Growing up in the 60s, within a Scottish Presbyterian culture, I quickly took on board a number of ideas - that men were in charge, women had their place and that life wasn’t about having fun, it was about working hard.

I believe a person’s experience in their early years shapes their whole outlook on life. That’s not to blame, it’s just what I see. You pick up beliefs and values from those close to you and it guides what and who you become.  These ideas flow into adulthood and sometimes hold you back from being your true self.

At the age of 45, I was forced to reflect on what was important in the lifetime we are given. My dear mother died of cancer after 4 long years, then my husband was diagnosed with cancer too. My first response was to look after everyone, keep things going and keep everyone happy. I just exhausted myself until one day it all became too much. I suddenly walked out, away from my life and left everything behind.

For several years I was lost, but through the many therapies - including five different psychotherapists - I began to regain my strength and balance. Most important of all, I was able to set myself free from past limiting beliefs that I’d absorbed and began to create a new future and a more positive outlook.

My experience at the start of the book is just one of many childhood ‘episodes’ that I retell. They are an important part of the story.

Memoir/Self-Help
Release Date: March 3, 2020

Success isn’t everything and no one knows it better than media professional Kay Hutchison, author of My Life in Thirty Seven Therapies: From Yoga to Hypnosis and Why Voodoo is Never the Answer. Recently released with much acclaim in the UK (Red Door Press, 2019), Hutchison is bringing her poignant, relatable and often funny story to the US in audio format in March 2020, spoken in her distinctive and appealing Scottish voice.

With a burgeoning media career, a beautiful home, and a loving husband, everything changed one day for Kay Hutchison when she woke up and said to her husband, “I’m leaving.” Why would someone who had it all walk away from the life most women would envy and turn to a host of weird and wonderful treatments in search of answers to a question she couldn’t even articulate?

Part memoir, part guide, My Life in Thirty Seven Therapies chronicles Kay’s quest for self-discovery. How she chose to deal with some very dark moments include forays into homeopathy, astrology, silent retreats and reiki while also dabbling in past-life regression, sonic therapy, shamanic retreats and other alternative modalities.

While some of the therapies she tried were more successful than others, Kay went further than most working through a total of 37 therapies. The good news is, she believes she came out on the other side healthy, whole and content as a result of some of these experiences. Packed full of funny stories, My Life in Thirty Seven Therapies will appeal to a myriad of women from younger working women looking for relief from stressful and arduous routines to baby boomers who practically invented our predilection for seeking alternative and exotic routes to life’s profound and mysterious answers.
