REVIEW OF Watching You by Lynda Renham

Kindle Edition
Expected publication: April 5th 2018 by Raucous Publishing

Ewan Galbreith is out of prison. Libby Owen is scared. Fifteen years earlier she saw Ewan murder her aunt and uncle with their own shotgun, and now he’s coming for her.

My Thoughts…

Lynda Renham is a go-to, must-read author for me.   With each new release I become more of a fan.    Watching you is a thriller that I could not put down.     There were so many clues, so many times that I thought I knew what the real story about Ewan and Libby was.    By the end I realized I had no clue and I loved every minute of reading this story.

I wanted to hate Ewan, he was creepy, he was stalkerish, and he was a double murderer.   Yet, there was something that I felt sorry for.   He truly believed he was innocent of the crime that he was convicted of.     He went the wrong way to prove it, he made himself look guiltier, and he scared the…out of me.

Libby was the character that I felt sorry for.   I couldn’t believe that she had lived in fear for so long, fear of someone knowing who she was, knowing her history, knowing what she was living in fear of.    I knew that there was more to the story but I had no clue what the rest of the story was.

The twists and turns of her life were so crazy and so enthralling.    I could not stop, I could not put the book down, I could not wait to get to the end of the book.   When I did get to the end I didn’t want it to end.    I wanted more, I wanted to keep reading.    This is my favorite Lynda Renham book so far.

REVIEW of The New Neighbors by Simon Lelic

(Berkley Trade Paperback; April 10, 2018; $16.00)

The Girl Before meets The Couple Next Door in an utterly satisfying Hitchcockian story about a couple who moves into their dream neighborhood only to discover nothing is as it seems...

The perfect couple. The perfect house. The perfect crime.

Londoners Jack and Syd found their dream home: lots of space, a great location, and a friendly owner who wanted a young couple to have it.

Everything is exactly what they hoped for when they move in—except Jack makes
a disturbing discovery in the attic, and Syd begins to wonder about the girl next door. And they each keep the other in the dark.

A mistake.

Because someone has just been killed outside their back door, and now
the police are watching them.

This is their chance to prove they're innocent—or to get away with murder.

Whose story do you believe?

My Thoughts…

The New Neighbors is written in a unique style.    The chapters are in alternating points of view.     Jack and Sydney share the responsibility of telling their story.    The unique part is they respond to one another.    Jack writes first, Sydney responds to what he writes.    Sydney writes, Jack responds to what Sydney writes.     I have never read a book in this style and I loved it.

I loved how much the reader gets to learn about Jack and Sydney but would have loved to have more information about the secondary characters.    I felt like there was more of a story to tell with them.   That being said I liked the story.   I was able to connect to the main characters; I felt their fear for their future, their fear for what was happening in their new house.

Simon Lelix managed to write a psychological thriller with a haunted house twist that I enjoyed reading.   I recommend picking up your own copy.

“An intricate, powerful, and deeply unsettling thriller about the profound ways in which cruelty can change its survivors, and the creeping fear that nothing—not your home, not love, not even your own mind—is as rock-solid and impregnable as we all want to believe.”—Tana French, New York Times bestselling author

Embraced at Seaside by Addison Cole is the sweet edition of New York Times bestselling author Melissa Foster's steamy romance novel Seaside Embrace and convey all of the passion you expect between two people in love, without any explicit scenes or harsh language.

My Thoughts…

Let me introduce you to Hunter Lacroux.     He is a player who doesn’t want a relationship.  Until he hooks up with Jana one too many times and feelings start to change.     Then Jana gives him a challenge that he can’t walk away from.    I LOVE the romance.   I LOVE the sunrises, sunsets, dinners, and everything else that comes with romance.     Addison Cole is so talented in writing these romantic, sweet, and a little steamy scenes.

Addison Cole is also amazing with her friendships.    The Seaside Girls are amazing.   They are the best of friends, more like sisters.    When push comes to shove these girls will talk about your love life, help you solve the worlds (or Seaside’s) problems, and lift you up when things are tough.   These are the type of friends that everyone wants and once you find them you never let go.

I am a fan of the Sweet with Heat series.   With each book I get introduce to a new story, I get to catch up with my favorites from other books in this series, and I get to fall for a new book crush.     This is a series that I look forward to more from, I get excited when I hear a new book is coming soon, and I devour each books as soon as I get my hands on it.

REVIEW of After Anna by Lisa Scottoline

Hardcover, 352 pages
Expected publication: April 10th 2018 by St. Martin's Press

Nobody cuts deeper than family...

Noah Alderman, a doctor and a widower, has remarried a wonderful woman, Maggie, and for the first time in a long time he and his son are happy. But their lives are turned upside down when Maggie’s daughter Anna moves in with them. Anna is a gorgeous seventeen-year-old who balks at living under their rules though Maggie, ecstatic to have her daughter back, ignores the red flags that hint at the trouble that is brewing. Events take a deadly turn when Anna is murdered and Noah is accused of the crime. Maggie must face not only the devastation of losing her only daughter, but the realization that her daughter's murder was at the hands of a husband she loves. New information sends Maggie searching for the truth, leading her to discover something darker than she could have ever imagined.

My Thoughts…

You know when you read everything an author writes how you start to anticipate how the story will go.   You know the authors writing style and think you can tell where she is going to take you?  Yea, well this is a Lisa Scottoline thriller but it will take you down paths that are not in your comfort zone and will make you question where you thought the story was going.

After Anna is a psychological thriller that touches on mental illness, losing your parental rights, rape, and lies.   So many lies…    There were times that I could feel the story was off, some of the things happening just didn’t add up.    There were times that I wasn’t sure if the character was telling the truth or a lie.   The story kept me on my toes, kept me guessing, and kept me wondering where I would end up.

This was not my favorite Lisa Scottoline book but it was a book that I continue to think about even a few days after I have finished.    The story has stuck with me, I told my mom about it, recommended it to a friend at work, and am excited to see what other’s will think about it.

I recommend picking up your own copy.

REVIEW of Flying at Night by Rebecca L. Brown

Hardcover, 304 pages
Expected publication: April 10th 2018 by Berkley Books

An emotionally charged debut novel, told through the voices of three family members, who learn that when your world changes, so does your destination....

Stay-at-home mom Piper Whitman Hart is too close to her nine-year-old son Fred to realize that his idiosyncrasies are signs of something more. And just when his diagnosis of autism sends her life reeling, she's dragged back into the orbit of her emotionally abusive father, Lance, after a heart attack leaves him with brain damage.

Fred is in need of a friend. Lance is in need of care. And Piper just wants to feel stable ground beneath her feet. What she never expects is that Fred and Lance--both misunderstood by the world--will start to connect in the most miraculous of ways...

My Thoughts…

Fly at Night was emotionally pulling.    I felt for Piper, I disliked her mother, I wanted to give her husband a guiding hand, and I wanted to hug her son.     Piper was overwhelmed.    Her mother was selfish, although with the abusive lifestyle she lived in she was due to be selfish.      Her husband just needs someone to show him what to do, he wants to help but doesn’t quite know what to do.    Curtis, her son, has autism and lives a full life with just some idiosyncrasies that make him sometimes hard to understand.

I felt for Piper.     She is a stay at home mom with so much on her plate and she doesn’t ask for help.     Piper has an autistic son, a father who is now mentally challenged after having a heart attack, and a husband who seems to want to help but doesn’t know what to do.   Add to that a mother who walked away and left her to deal with everything.     I am not sure how much more she could handle without crumbling.

This book was interesting, I enjoyed it.   Yet, it felt like I was reading a story.  I know I was but I like to fall into my books, become attached to the characters, and become invested in the plot.    With Fly at Night I wasn’t as invested in the story.    I enjoyed it, I wanted to know what happens, and I am glad that I took the time to read it.

EXCERPT: He held the truck door for her, then circled around and climbed in. “Where to?” “Somewhere quiet. I’ve been surrounded by people all day.” “I agree. The house has been full of friends since I got Gram home. I managed to run most of them off early last night so she could sleep and again this afternoon to let Gram rest a few hours before the quilters swarmed in.” He drove through the Hamburger Hut, picked up malts and burgers, then crossed the bridge to the old part of town. The boards over the water were uneven, rattling her from side to side like a cheap, twirling carnival ride. Jillian raised her eyebrows but didn’t say a word. Where they were going didn’t matter. She was with the one she wanted to be with. She needed to stop worrying about lingering memories and just relax. He parked by a three-story building and climbed out. She waited, not sure what to do. The malts and burgers were still on the seat beside her. Surely they weren’t stopping here. This place was scary even in daylight. She didn’t plan on staying around to see how it looked in less than an hour. When he opened her door, he raised his arms to catch her. “Come with me.” He encouraged as if offering far more than a lift down from the high seat. Her legs were plenty long enough to take the step out, but she slid into his embrace. He lowered her to the ground. For moment they were so close they touched as they breathed. She thought he might lean in slightly and kiss her, but he simply brushed his cheek against her hair. “Trust me, Jillian, you’re going to like this restaurant.” He grabbed his raincoat from behind the seat, handed her the drinks and picked up their meal. Following him into the building, she was surprised to see how sound the old factory seemed to be. The ceiling was tall, over twenty feet. Decaying ropes still hung from pulleys, and worktables stood dusty, silently waiting for craftsmen to arrive. The windows were high, ribboning the building with natural light. Staying close, she whispered as though she might disturb ghosts, “What did they used to make in here?” “I’m not sure. I think parts of oil rigs were shipped in and assembled here. I don’t know much about it, but there’s an old Christmas tree over there in the corner.” He pointed to a six-foot structure that was formed from a mixture of valves, spools and fittings welded together. “They’re used at oil or gas well sites. I see them in the oil fields around. I’m not really sure why they call them Christmas trees. A roughneck would have to be drunk to mistake this jumble of metal for a tree.” She turned in a complete circle. “Nice restaurant.” “Oh, we’re not there yet.” He pointed to a staircase along one wall. “We’ve got rooftop seating.” Suddenly excited, she climbed ahead of him, her shoes tapping a rhythm in double time. At the top, she waited impatiently with a malt in each hand. He juggled the bag of burgers as he shoved the heavy door open. They stepped onto the rooftop with no one else around. She could see for miles in every direction. The trees, the fields. Oil rigs, scattered homes and barns, schools and churches. “It’s beautiful!” The sun’s low glow gave everything a golden light. He set the bag down and spread his raincoat out like a tablecloth on an air vent cover. “It’s not yet, but it will be.” He pulled up two empty five-gallon buckets to use as stools. She sat the malts down. “You’ve been to this restaurant before.” “Guilty. But I’ve never brought anyone here. Only you.” While he unwrapped his burger, she looked around, pointing out everything as if he was also seeing it for the first time. “Look how winding the creek is.” “I had no idea there were so many trees.” “Oh, look at those horses running.” She loved the way the evening clouds moved over the land, darkening the hues of the earth in shadow as they drifted. “It’s winter now, not near as pretty as it’ll be come spring.” He set his hamburger beside hers and came to join her near the roof’s edge. “I lease that flat land out to a farmer who plants cotton every spring. That brown dirt will look like a green carpet in a few months.” “I won’t be here in spring.” She let the wind catch her words as she turned away from him and the view. The black tar roof beneath her feet was all she saw now, but she stared hard, willing not one tear to fall. This time. This place she would miss. When she left, Jillian knew memories would be packed in her heart. A year from now, a decade, a lifetime, she’d still remember the beauty of this view in winter and wonder how it looked in spring.

“Compelling and beautifully written.” —Debbie Macomber, #1 New York Times bestselling author on Ransom Canyon
