Q & A with Jane Igharo, author of The Sweetest Remedy

1.     Tell us about THE SWEETEST REMEDY!

The Sweetest Remedy is about a woman, Hannah Bailey, who travels to Nigeria to attend the funeral of the father she never knew. While there, she meets her family for the first time, some who accept her and some who think she doesn’t belong. She also meets a love interest who helps her to see herself in a new light. At the same time, Hannah discovers a lot about who she is and who she wants to be.

2.     What inspired you to write this novel?

One of my favorite Nollywood movies, Chief Daddy. It’s about the death of the patriarch of a wealthy and prominent family in Lagos. I loved how the family members—all with big personalities—came together for the funeral. It was chaotic, funny, and heartfelt. The movie just really stuck with me, and I thought it would be cool to put a spin on it and make it my own.

3.     Do you relate to the heroine, Hannah, in any way?

Not entirely. But the one thing we have in common is that we’re both writers.

4.     What was your favorite part of writing the book? What was your biggest challenge?

I really enjoyed writing the characters. They were all so different, and getting into their heads was a lot of fun. The biggest challenge was understanding Hannah’s insecurities and weaknesses and trying to make them believable. This was often challenging because I didn’t relate to Hannah’s insecurities as I did with the main character in my debut novel, Ties That Tether. It took a few rounds of edits to truly understand Hannah as a character.

5.     What do you hope readers will take away from reading THE SWEETEST REMEDY?

I hope The Sweetest Remedy will entertain readers and introduce them to an aspect of Nigeria they might have been unaware of.

Review for The Woman at the Front by Lecia Cornwall

The Woman at the Front by  Lecia Cornwall

ebook, 464 pages

Publication: September 28th 2021 by Berkley

Genre:  Historical Fiction, France, WWI

From Goodreads:  A daring young woman risks everything to pursue a career as a doctor on the front lines in France during World War I, and learns the true meaning of hope, love, and resilience in the darkest of times.

When Eleanor Atherton graduates from medical school near the top of her class in 1917, she dreams of going overseas to help the wounded, but her ambition is thwarted at every turn. Eleanor's parents insist she must give up medicine, marry a respectable man, and assume her proper place. While women might serve as ambulance drivers or nurses at the front, they cannot be physicians—that work is too dangerous and frightening.

Nevertheless, Eleanor is determined to make more of a contribution than sitting at home knitting for the troops. When an unexpected twist of fate sends Eleanor to the battlefields of France as the private doctor of a British peer, she seizes the opportunity for what it is—the chance to finally prove herself.

But there's a war on, and a casualty clearing station close to the front lines is an unforgiving place. Facing skeptical commanders who question her skills, scores of wounded men needing care, underhanded efforts by her family to bring her back home, and a blossoming romance, Eleanor must decide if she's brave enough to break the rules, face her darkest fears, and take the chance to win the career—and the love—she's always wanted.

My Thoughts:  Eleanor Atherton is a hero.   She gets accepted into medical school and then graduates near the top of her class.  WWI is going on and she wants nothing more than to do her part as a doctor.   I found her persistence amazing.   She had everything working against her, but she still found a way to make a difference, to follow her heart, and to become the doctor she dreamed of becoming.

Lecia Cornwall wrote a book that I could not stop reading.  I was so intrigued by the characters but also by the storyline.   The horrors of war, the way Eleanor had to travel to get to where she had to be, and the people she dealt with kept me turning pages and hoping that all would be okay.  I was hopeful that Eleanor Atherton would find people who would support her, who would guide her, and who would get her to where she needed to be.

The Woman at the Front is a strong, powerful story of a woman challenges the parameters of her time and her family.   She pushes the boundaries, she challenges those who question her, and she is amazing.

Review for The Santa Suit by Mary Kay Andrews

The Santa Suit by  Mary Kay Andrews

Hardcover, 224 pages

Publication: September 28th 2021 by St. Martin's Press

Genre:  Christmas, Chick Lit, Contemporary

From Goodreads:  From May Kay Andrews, the New York Times bestselling author of Hello, Summer, comes a novella celebrating the magic of Christmas and second chances in The Santa Suit.

When newly-divorced Ivy Perkins buys an old farmhouse sight unseen, she is definitely looking for a change in her life. The Four Roses, as the farmhouse is called, is a labor of love--but Ivy didn't bargain on just how much labor. The previous family left so much furniture and so much junk, that it's a full-time job sorting through all of it.

At the top of a closet, Ivy finds an old Santa suit--beautifully made and decades old. In the pocket of a suit she finds a note written in a childish hand: it's from a little girl who has one Christmas wish, and that is for her father to return home from the war. This discovery sets Ivy off on a mission. Who wrote the note? Did the man ever come home? What mysteries did the Rose family hold?

Ivy's quest brings her into the community, at a time when all she wanted to do was be left alone and nurse her wounds. But the magic of Christmas makes miracles happen, and Ivy just might find more than she ever thought possible: a welcoming town, a family reunited, a mystery solved, and a second chance at love.

My Thoughts:  My first Christmas book of 2021 and it was the perfect start to the season.  Okay, it is only September but Christmas is right around the corner.  I am ready for the fire in the fireplace, the hot cocoa, and the cuddling up with blankets.  Mary Kay Andrew has set the mood and I am read for it.

Ivy is amazing.   She has had her life torn up and decides to start over.  Her bravery is moving, buying a house unseen, and making new friends makes her wonderful.   I loved how she embraces every challenge, opens her heart to new experiences, and gives so much to her new community.   As she works to clean up her new farmhouse, she finds family treasures and knows that they could be important to someone.   The way that she works to discover who is in the pictures, the way that she reaches out to the people of the community to find the people, and the way that she embraces the Rose family history as if it was her own was heart warming and loving.   Ivy does not let her history keep her down, she works hard, plays hard, and loves even harder.

The setting of the small town with its festival, quaint shops, and wonderful residents was perfect.  The Southern Charm of the community was real and exactly what I was hoping for.   I opened the book to read a few chapters and could not put it down.   It was a one-sitting read for me.

**Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

Q& A with Sarah Echavarre Smith author of On Location

Q & A with Sarah Echavarre Smith, author of On Location.

  1. Tell us about ON LOCATION!

It’s a sweet and sexy romcom about Alia, a Filipino-American television producer who gets to make the series of her dreams: a show about Utah’s national parks. It’s the career break she’s been working years for, but she’ll have to navigate working with the hottie who ghosted her and a diva host to make her professional—and romantic—dreams come true.

  1. What inspired you to write this novel?

So many things! My love for travel mostly but also the pandemic and subsequent quarantine too weirdly enough! Like everyone else last year, I was stuck at home dreaming about all these places I wished I could visit. Southern Utah is one of my favorite destinations with its breathtaking desert landscape and jaw-dropping red rock formations. I used that as the setting for the book and came up with the actual idea for the plot around that. It’s also an ode to a couple of my favorite TV series, Rock The Park and UnREAL. Very different shows, I know! But I love the adventure aspect of Rock the Park and how it highlighted the national parks in each episode. And I adore the reality TV drama of UnREAL. That inspired some dramatic moments and characters in ON LOCATION.

  1. Do you relate to the heroine, Alia, in any way?

Absolutely, I can definitely relate to her struggle as a woman working in a male dominated industry and constantly trying to prove herself. I’ve worked in similar situations in the past, and the frustration you feel when people are constantly doubting and undermining you just because you’re a woman is very real and very upsetting. I also relate to her closeness with her family and her experience as a Filipino-American, since my background is also Filipino-American.

  1. What was your favorite part of writing the book? What was your biggest challenge?

My favorite part was writing the tension between Alia and Drew. I love their meetcute (it’s my favorite I’ve written so far), and building off of their instant chemistry and turning it into conflict and banter as they work together was really fun.

My biggest challenge was learning about the outdoor television industry! When I pitched this idea to my publisher, it was kind of a whim and I wasn’t sure they would go for it because it was a bit out there. But then they did and after the excitement of getting the contract wore off, I thought, “Crap...now how do I pull this off?” haha. Luckily I have a couple of friends who work in the TV industry so I spent some time interviewing them to get a better idea of how things operate. I watched tons of episodes and behind-the-scenes footage of Rock The Park, a TV show that follows two hosts as they explore national parks in the US. I also watched the entire series UnREAL to get some inspo for behind-the-scenes TV production drama. I think ON LOCATION ended up being an excellent blend of romcom, TV drama, and nature show.

  1. What do you hope readers will take away from reading ON LOCATION?

I just hope that my book can be a fun escape. Life is stressful and full of uncertainty, and if reading my book can be a pleasant distraction for people and bring them a small bit of joy, that means the world to me.

And I also hope they show some love for the national parks! I think the national park system is a treasure, and I would be so happy if reading ON LOCATION inspired people to visit a national park or support them in some way by volunteering or donating

In ON LOCATION, Alia Dunn has finally gotten her big break. After years of working her way up at TV's top outdoor travel channel, she gets the green light from network executives to bring her dream project to life: produce a series about Utah's national parks. It's a touching tribute to her late apong, who sparked Alia's passion for travel and the outdoors as a kid.

Alia is thrilled--until she meets her newest crew member, Drew Irons. The same Drew she had the most amazing first date with two weeks ago--who then ghosted her. The same Drew who has the most deliciously thick forearms and who loves second-guessing her every move on set in front of the entire crew. It's not long before the tension between them turns hotter than the Utah desert in the dead of summer, and their steamy encounters lead to major feelings.

But when the series host goes rogue one too many times, jeopardizing the entire shoot, Alia realizes that she'll need to organize one hell of a coup to save her show--and she'll need Drew's help to do it. It's the riskiest move she's ever made. If she pulls it off, she'll end up with a hit series and her dream guy . . . but if it all goes wrong, she could lose both.
