Review for The View from Alameda Island by Robyn Carr

Hardcover, 320 pages
Expected publication: April 30th 2019 by Mira Books

#1 New York Times bestselling author Robyn Carr delivers a poignant and powerful story about how one woman’s best intentions lead to the worst of situations and how the power of love helps her to heal and ultimately triumph.

From the outside looking in, Lauren Delaney has a life to envy—a successful career, a solid marriage to a prominent surgeon and two beautiful daughters who are off to good colleges. But on her twenty-fourth wedding anniversary Lauren makes a decision that will change everything.

Lauren won’t pretend things are perfect anymore. She defies the controlling husband who has privately mistreated her throughout their marriage and files for divorce. And as she starts her new life, she meets a kindred spirit—a man who is also struggling with the decision to end his unhappy marriage.

But Lauren’s husband wants his “perfect” life back and his actions are shocking. Facing an uncertain future, Lauren discovers an inner strength she didn’t know she had as she fights for the love and happiness she deserves.

My Thoughts…

When I pick up a Robyn Carr book I think romance, sweet, and fun.    This book is all of that but it is also a lot of twists and turns that will make you think about the life you are living.

Getting married means forever, means love, means respect and means happiness.   For Lauren, none of that comes true.    She marries to escape being poor.   She wants the status that comes with being married to a successful surgeon, yet that isn’t what she gets.   The book starts up with Lauren figuring out how to stand up for herself and leave her husband so I instantly felt respect for her.   Sure she has lived for 20+ years with the abuse but she is now looking for a way out, setting up a life for herself without being a wife of a surgeon, and finding out who Lauren is.

Everything about The View from Alameda Island is wonderful.   The book is hard to put down, easy to fall into, and wonderful from beginning to end.

Review for Park Avenue Summer by Renee Rosen

Paperback, 368 pages
Expected publication: April 30th 2019 by Berkley

Mad Men meets The Devil Wears Prada as Renée Rosen draws readers into the glamour of 1965 New York City and Cosmopolitan Magazine, where a brazen new Editor-in-Chief--Helen Gurley Brown--shocks America by daring to talk to women about all things off limits...

New York City is filled with opportunities for single girls like Alice Weiss who leaves her small Midwestern town to chase her big city dreams and unexpectedly lands the job of a lifetime working for Helen Gurley Brown, the first female Editor-in-Chief of a then failing Cosmopolitan Magazine.

Nothing could have prepared Alice for the world she enters as editors and writers resign on the spot, refusing to work for the woman who wrote the scandalous bestseller, Sex and the Single Girl. While confidential memos, article ideas, and cover designs keep finding their way into the wrong hands, someone tries to pull Alice into this scheme to sabotage her boss. But Alice remains loyal and becomes all the more determined to help Helen succeed. As pressure mounts at the magazine and Alice struggles to make her way in New York, she quickly learns that in Helen Gurley Brown's world, a woman can demand to have it all.

My Thoughts…

Imagine a world when Cosmopolitan, the magazine, wasn’t a force in the magazine world… I can’t.   Since I’ve been old enough to know what Cosmo is it has always been a go-to women’s magazine. From the sexy, eye-catching covers to the edgy titles on the cover Cosmo has always been a magazine that is on top of fashion and knowing what women want to read about.     Helen Gurley Brown is the one who took Cosmo from a humdrum on the way out of business magazine to the one we all know and love now.

The story is told by Helen’s secretary, Alice.   The secretary is the woman who has the inside scoop on the who’s who, who’s out, and who’s in, and who is doing what with who.    Alice comes to New York to start a dream life.   She dreams of being a photographer but instead becomes the secretary to a woman who is breaking down walls and showing the men in the magazine world what she is capable of.

I love the strength of the women in Park Avenue Summer.   They show the men that they are capable of making a successful magazine.  They prove that they can stand up for themselves and be successful in a world run by men.    They have relationships that are what they want them to be, a marriage, a friendship, or just a convenience until the real thing comes along.

This is an amazing historical fiction book with a great look into life in New York during 1965.

RELEASE TOUR & REVIEW for Boyfriend Maintenance by Lauren Helms

RELEASE TOUR FOR Boyfriend Maintenance by Lauren Helms

Emmy King became a disgraced high-society princess when she walked away from her family’s
money. Jake Harer is the sexy yet uninterested apartment building’s maintenance man. When the
two agree to help each other out, they quickly realize the more time they spend together the more
the lines get blurred. The fifth book in the #mustread series, 425 Madison Avenue, is now live.
Read Boyfriend Maintenance by Lauren Helms today!

My Thoughts…
I am entirely hooked on the 425 Madison Series.    With each book, I meet a new resident and get the joy of watching them fall in love.    They not only fall in love but they discover things about themselves that they didn’t know, they open their hearts to feelings they never thought they deserved, and they find their happily ever after.

Boyfriend Maintenance is the story of Emmy, who walked away from the privileged lifestyle that her parents were offering in order to be able to make her own choices and live her own life.    She feels that men are only after two things…sex and her money(which she doesn’t have).    When she needs a date to her brother’s wedding festivities the maintenance man at 425 fits the job perfectly.    He accepts her proposal and the fun starts.

Jake is just looking for hook-ups and a way to provide a good home for his someday (he hasn’t even met her yet) wife and family.  He wants a house in a good neighborhood, a well-paying job, and someone who doesn’t look down on him for what job he does have.   When the opportunity to make some “easy” money comes knocking on his door he just can’t turn it down.   Little did he know that with this easy money comes so much more.
From their first meeting it was obvious that a fake relationship was not what this would end up being.    The two of them had sparks flying from the beginning as Jake fixed Emmy’s garbage disposal.   I loved reading about them figuring each other out, opening their hearts, and learning that they can trust and love each other.

About Boyfriend Maintenance

Emmy
My bad reputation is coming back to haunt me. Now, I need a date for my brother’s wedding just to
keep the vultures at bay. I’ve noticed Jake around the building and he’s the perfect man for the job.
The thing is, I don’t actually have what I promised in return for his help, but I don’t want this to end.

Jake
I’ve seen Emmy and she’s out of my league, but that doesn’t stop me from taking her up on her offer
and upping the ante. I have rules, however, the more time we spend together the more the lines get
blurred. Her lie made her more like me than I ever thought possible. Too bad liars don’t do it for me.

A little boyfriend maintenance goes a long way…

After all, 425 Madison Avenue is the perfect place to fall in love.

*Each story is completely standalone.

“Oh, well … hello there, hot stuff.” Mrs. Jenkins stands in the open doorway of her apartment.
Her arm slides up the doorframe slightly awkwardly as she leans into the frame. She’s
attempting to look sexy in a Japanese silk kimono robe. It’s a red floral print that hangs
nearly to her ankles. She has surprisingly good posture for a seventy-year-old woman.
Her husky voice is seductive as she gestures for me to come in. I have to mentally prepare
myself every time I have a work order for unit 2007. Which is normally once a week.
Mrs. Jenkins is a retired Broadway actress. She hit her stride when she starred in the hit
musical Chicago in the mid-seventies. Dorthy Jenkins is a dramatic, wealthy retiree who just
happens to hit on me every time I’m here. She may be a tad lonely, so I deal with it.
“Good afternoon, Mrs. Jenkins. My work order says that you’ve got faulty smoke detectors.”
Honestly, that seems a bit suspicious since we worked through the entire building updating
the detectors less than six months ago.
“Dorthy, darling. Please, stop calling me Mrs. Jenkins. You make me feel like a cougar.”
I raise my eyebrow at that. More like a puma since she’s got to be at least forty years older than me.
I set down my toolbox and scan the living room for the unit’s central detector.
“All right, Dorthy. You’re having issues with the smoke detectors? Let’s just take a look.
I’ll get these fixed up in no time.” Really, I just want to get out of here. The longer I’m in this
apartment, the more cheek pinches I get. And I’m not just talking about pinches to my face.
She gets a little bolder with each visit. Not looking forward to the day she takes it too far.
Her flirting seems harmless though. She just really appreciates those “hot young thangs.”
Her words, not mine.
“Well, no rush. I’ll just pour us a little nightcap.” I don't mention it's only four in the afternoon.
“Will two fingers do, Jake? I’ve always preferred two.” She waggles her eyebrows.
I divert my eyes. The sexual reference catches me off guard and I feel my face heat.
Clearing my throat, I shake my head. “I’m sorry, Dorthy, but no drinking on the job.” I pull out my
step ladder so I can reach the smoke detector.
“You’re such a good boy, darling. I admire that. I’ll just have a nip and enjoy the show.”
Just like she normally does. Unfortunately, she isn’t the only 425 Madison resident to watch
me while I do my job. I’ve worked in this building for nearly three years now. Growing up, I
never had dreams of becoming a maintenance man, but I’ve always been good with my hands.

Release Tour for Clear as a Bell by Emily Hussey

Title: Clear as a Bell
Author: Emily Hussey
Genre: Contemporary Romance (novella)
Release Date: April 26, 2019
Miranda Montgomery is determined to win the contract with the new hospital. Her company provides specialized IT services and the job is crucial if she wants to keep the business afloat until Christmas. Hugh Paterson is the Chief Operating Officer at the hospital, and Miranda needs to curb her tongue if she is going to keep him onside.
There’s no denying the attraction between the two, but to act on that could have consequences for them both. It’s already apparent there are those who would sabotage her business if they could, and Miranda must use her wits to survive. That doesn’t quell the heat and passion when she and Hugh run into each other at an industry conference.
Subsequent events make her understand that for the sake of her employees, she has to put the contract first. After all – she and Hugh can pick up where they left off when the job is finished. At least, that’s what she thought. She never expected Hugh to leave her alone at Christmas.

“As I said in my email, there are a few aspects of your proposal I want to clarify.” He flipped through a bound report on the table in front of him, stopping at a section marked with sticky tabs. “Back-up and security procedures. That’s my first area of concern. Data confidentiality is crucial. How do you vet your employees?”
Jack drew himself up as though about to speak. Miranda jumped in before that could happen. This was an easy question.
“We request all employees to submit to national police checks before permanent employment is offered, Mr. Paterson. We engage contractors according to work load, and they are also required to undergo the check as well.”
He nodded. “Hugh, please. No need to stand on formality.” Pursing his lips, he made a few notes in the margin of the report. Upside-down, the jottings were unreadable.
Miranda pushed on. “Part of our induction program entails instruction on our corporate policies, and processes for maintaining security. Everyone understands that a breach results in instant dismissal, and the prospect of legal action.”
Hugh looked to Jack again. “Can you run me through your risk management process?”
What was it with this man? She maintained a poker face over rising irritation. She couldn’t afford to jeopardize the contract. IT Health Solutions needed this job. It was make or break time. She focused on a business-like portrayal.
“If you look at the appendices, Hugh, you’ll see a copy of our risk management report. This assessment takes place at the beginning of every project, with responsibility apportioned to those who should monitor the impacts. It’s a dynamic document, updated every month. As soon as an issue is identified, we’ll be on to it.”
Hugh Paterson looked up from the report, put his pen down, and sat back in his chair. He regarded Jack intently, tapping the cover of the report. “On paper, you've come across with a well-thought out proposal. What guarantees can you give me that your company can—"
Miranda couldn’t let the meeting continue in this vein. Leaning forward, she tapped one fingernail on the table.
"Mr. Paterson—Hugh—IT Health Solutions is my company. If there are any guarantees required, you will need to speak to me. Jack will address some of the technical questions." She sensed his surprise, but couldn't help herself. "If you read that report thoroughly, you would have seen the section on company ownership and key personnel. Is this an indication of the level of due diligence undertaken by hospital administration?"
She felt Jack nudge her foot under the table. She knew what that meant. Shut up, Miranda. Your mouth will get us into trouble one of these days. He said it often enough.
Hugh's posture shifted slightly as his eyes slid from Jack to Miranda. She held his gaze and her breath. He ignored her question and didn't rise to the bait. He remained silent for one, two beats.
Emily Hussey splits her time between work in Melbourne CBD and her home in Adelaide, South Australia. She has lived in several Australian cities, and spent a few years living in Alice Springs, the setting for the Red Centre series.
While there, she also obtained her private pilot’s licence, providing the technical background for the aviation scenes in the Red Centre Series.
Emily enjoys the short story format, and has been published in local anthologies. The genres range from crime to romance, with some contemporary fiction for good measure.
She was a marriage celebrant for 24 years, and has married couples in many different locations, ranging from private gardens, to beaches to caves or rural locations. Many of her clients remain friends to this day.
The bottom drawer is always full of outlines for future projects. So many ideas, so little time. Plans revolve around making writing her 9-5 job, and gaining inspiration from travels both in Australia and overseas.
