About THE HOOKUP

Is there an equation for the perfect hookup? Turns out it’s a lot more complicated than one plus one. . . .
Sophie: Numbers are my comfort zone, which explains why my sex life is a big fat zero. Then again, if I’m smart enough to earn a PhD, why can’t I calculate a way to get a guy into bed, just to see what all the fuss is about? With my prima donna sister, Bella, getting married in Maine, I figure her wedding is the perfect opportunity for my little experiment. And Cain Jordan seems hot enough—he’s certainly drunk enough—to show me what I’ve been missing. Judging by the body of evidence, it’s a lot. . . .
Cain: Being stuck in the same town as my lying SOB twin brother, Christian—who may or may not be the father of the son I’m not allowed to see—is a hell of a reason to drink myself silly after the lobster boat docks each day. Any port in a storm . . . But Sophie’s different. She doesn’t play around. And she’s becoming a habit I don’t want to break. Because the smartest woman I’ve ever met is also the sexiest—and the only one who makes me want to change.
Don’t miss Bella and Christian’s story in The Breakup!

Get your hands on THE HOOKUP for $1.99 now for a limited time!

BLOG TOUR & GIVEAWAY for Unfinished Business by SC Cunningham

Crime Investigator & Thriller Author S C Cunningham
Unfinished Business (Book II of The David Trilogy)

Creating Characters.

When building a character I draw from observations of people I know or have closely watched, it’s easier to write from truth.  Luckily, I’ve worked in a few fascinating industries, where I’ve been able to study a wide range of characters.

British born of Irish parents I was plonked from the age of 8yrs into an Irish Catholic nuns boarding school. After a short spell of studying law (realizing there is too much injustice in our systems) I went on to work as a fashion model, married a rock musician and worked in the music to film industry. Got divorced and then as a single mum worked within sports celebrity management, football, horseracing, children’s charities, and more recently for the Police as a Crime Investigator – Intel Analyst, Major Crime Team, Wanted and Absconder Units.

Am a proud mum to a wonderful daughter (Contemporary Artist Scarlett Raven) and owned by three dogs.

For the past ten years I’ve been drawing on these experiences to write steamy Psychological Thrillers The David Trilogy and gritty Paranormal Thrillers The Fallen Angel Series. And I’ve learned to prefer dogs over humans… present company excepted. J

I tend to write what I know; the characters in both series of books are founded on real life experiences.

The David Trilogy characterisation was kick-started by an incident that happened to me in my twenties, when I was living in London. Frighteningly, I crossed paths with a prolific serial attacker who was targeting single girls living on their own in basement flats in Notting Hill and Olympia.

I got away unscathed (must have an Angel looking out for me) and helped Police with ID’ing the suspect. He was a nice looking, well dressed, calm, cold, cunning character. He didn’t say a word, he just watched, enjoying the fear he was instilling.

I remember looking into his face and wondering why? What awful thing had happened in his life to turn him from a sweet little boy into an evil adult? The seed for complex David Howard was sown.

Using a mix of my own experiences (nuns, boarding school, modelling, the press and celebrity management) I created his world of manipulation, shining a light on the carnage that the misuse of power, religion and passion causes.

The Fallen Angel Series character was also kick-started by a person I met as a child. At 4yrs old I was taken, I survived (that Angel again), another little girl was taken the following week, she didn’t. Coming from an Irish catholic family, I prayed each night to God asking him for a deal. That if I was a good girl, when I died, would he let me sit on a cloud, invisible, and help catch the baddies who slip through his fingers?

That incident and how a little girl reacted to it stayed with me. I’m not religious, but I do believe there’s something out there, an energy, maybe quantum physics we don’t understand yet. So I’ve turned the idea into a paranormal crime romance, with the lead character Amy Fox based on that little girl and her deal. And started to create her character.

We find career girl Amy aged 30yrs, with God and her deal long forgotten, mysteriously dying, under a London tube train. Awakening to find herself in an MI5’esque Unit that dishes out tough karma from the skies, wondering what the hell is going on?

Having formed her reason and background story, I had fun pushing her outside her comfort zone and adding further details that build up her personality. I gave her defects and flaws (stubborn, demanding, soft hearted), internal dialogue (muttering to herself, asking why, talking through insecurities and dilemmas), ambition and motivation (the end game, revenge), weaknesses (the handsome ex SAS Jack, impatience, temper, honesty, insecurity), relationships (Jack, parents, best friend Sally), and threw a third party love triangle into the mix (Jack and his evil ex, Mara). And before you know it… voila, I have a 3D character to work with.

I enjoy complex characters that slowly reveal themselves, are not who they seem and engage with the reader, pulling at heartstrings and worst fears. I try to create a person who the reader would either like to hang out with or see as their worst enemy. Someone they feel empathy for and understand their choices, right or wrong. Someone they champion and punch the air with a resounding “Yessss!”

Because I’m an old romantic who loves a bit of drama my books also have to have a few oh-so-sexy personalities with complicated love lives, evil exes, edge of seat fear, twists, turns, steamy romances and cheeky laugh out loud banter.

Working on a series allows you to build characters that hopefully people will fall in love with and get excited about. In The David Trilogy, David is a very bad person, but fans often write saying that they love him warts and all, and can’t wait to see what he does next. They understand and champion the boy, but fear the man he has become.

Like me, they are hooked on his charismatic charm. I loved this character so much I have dragged him kicking and screaming into The Fallen Angel Series.

Unfinished Business (Book II of The David Trilogy) is a sexy thriller, think Psycho meets 50 Shades. It can be a little naughty and may not be for everyone. But if you’re brave enough, grab a glass of vino, close the bedroom door and read alone. J

Thank you for joining us, keep safe.

Title: WHEN LIGHT LEADS LEAD TO YOU

Author: C.R. Ellis

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Release Day: August 1st

About WHEN LIGHTS LEADS TO YOU:

JASMINE Once upon a time, there was a girl who had a crush on a boy. Eventually, they fell in love. They lived happily ever after. Except they didn’t. Not even close. I’m the girl, but that’s not my story. Once upon a time, I fell for a boy, but we didn’t have a happily ever after. In fact, we crashed and burned. Which turned out to be for the best because it forced me to grow up and realize the only wedding bells in my future are the ones I orchestrate for clients. For six years I’ve been perfectly content with meaningless, short-lived flings and running from anything that resembles a real relationship. That boy? He’s my best friend’s brother, and he’s no longer the boy I fell for—he’s a man I can’t stand. Oh, and he’s also my new neighbor.

DEAN Seemingly overnight, Jasmine Winters went from being my sister’s best friend to being the girl I couldn’t get enough of. But like most good things, it didn’t last. Things fell apart so suddenly, I’m able to convince myself that summer never happened. At least, I was, until the only distance between us is a hallway instead of a time zone. Six years ago, I let Jasmine slip through my fingers without an explanation because I was convinced we’d be better off apart. But now that we’re neighbors, our unspoken vow of apathy has unwittingly been shattered. Our exchanges consist of trading insults and icy stare downs. But in-between, I catch glimpses of the way she used to look at me, glimpses of the girl I fell for years ago. Things are different now, though. This time… I won’t let her walk away without giving me answers.

When Light Leads to You is the second full-length novel of the Forget Me Knot series, but can be read as a standalone.

**Due to strong language and the sexy times between these two, this book is recommended to readers ages 18 and up.**

Exclusive Excerpt:

“Oh, no you don’t. I’m not letting you walk away this time, Goldie.” “Don’t call me that. It’s like you nicknamed me after a retriever, and I hate it.” I tried to break free from his grip, to no avail. “Let me go, Dean.” “No. This ends here and now, Jasmine.” He sighed and dropped my hand. “Fuck. I—Can we start over?” The sincerity in his voice caught me off guard. It was an uncharacteristic moment of vulnerability, and it took me back to the days when we were close. “Fine. You have five minutes.” “Not here,” he said, shaking his head and grabbing my hand again. “Come with me.” Against my better judgment, I didn’t rip free of his grip like every part of my brain begged me to do. He led me to a 4-wheeler and stopped, searching my face before hopping on and gesturing for me to climb on behind him. I hesitated. “Jas, quit looking at me like you think I’m trying to decide where the best spot would be to dump your lifeless body.” I swallowed a laugh. “Are you?” He shook his head as a smile stretched across his lips. “Tick tock, Jasmine. You only gave me five minutes. Come on.” I bit my lip and actively tried not to think about the fact that riding behind him would mean touching his body. Maybe even holding on to those drool-worthy abs I’d almost convinced myself weren’t there. Shit, I muttered under my breath before climbing onto the ATV. It’s a fucking 4-wheeler; it’s not like he’s asking you to straddle his naked body and ride him into the wee morning hours. “Ready?” he asked, releasing the clutch. “Yes,” I squeaked, fighting a wave of butterflies our proximity set loose in my chest cavity. I had to hold in a moan when I got a whiff of his cologne, which somehow gave off the perfect balance of masculinity soaked in scents of sandalwood and citrus. Pretty sure someone figured out how to sell pure seduction in a bottle. Before I could stop it, my mind conjured up images of our bodies tangled together, where the speed at which we were shredding each other’s clothes would’ve qualified us for the Olympics of undressing. Jesus, that escalated quickly. I shifted uncomfortably, cursing this position for not allowing me to press my thighs together. For the duration of the ride, I willed my brain to think of unsexy topics like the best brand of laundry detergent and the best way to cook cauliflower. No matter where my mind drifted, though, I kept coming back to the notion that this conversation was probably going to shift the very foundation of what our tempestuous relationship was made of. And I had no fucking clue how to feel about that.

REVIEW of Rainy Day Friends by Jill Shalvis

About Rainy Day Friends

• Paperback: 384 pages
• Publisher: William Morrow Paperbacks (June 19, 2018)

Following the USA Today bestseller, Lost and Found Sisters, comes Rainy Day Friends, Jill Shalvis’ moving story of heart, loss, betrayal, and friendship.

Six months after Lanie Jacobs’ husband’s death, it’s hard to imagine anything could deepen her sense of pain and loss. But then Lanie discovers she isn’t the only one grieving his sudden passing. A serial adulterer, he left behind several other women who, like Lanie, each believe she was his legally wedded wife.

Rocked by the infidelity, Lanie is left to grapple with searing questions. How could she be so wrong about a man she thought she knew better than anyone? Will she ever be able to trust another person?  Can she even trust herself?

Desperate to make a fresh start, Lanie impulsively takes a job at the family-run Capriotti Winery. At first, she feels like an outsider among the boisterous Capriottis. With no real family of her own, she’s bewildered by how quickly they all take her under their wing and make her feel like she belongs. Especially Mark Capriotti, a gruffly handsome Air Force veteran turned deputy sheriff who manages to wind his way into Lanie’s cold, broken heart—along with the rest of the clan.

Everything is finally going well for her, but the arrival of River Green changes all that. The fresh-faced twenty-one-year old seems as sweet as they come…until her dark secrets come to light—secrets that could destroy the new life Lanie’s only just begun to build.

My Thoughts...

Rainy Day Friends is the perfect summer, it's too hot to be outside story.    I loved the story of Lanie escaping her life after finding out her husband was a husband to other women and finds herself pulled into the amazing family of the Capriottis.    This family is wonderful.    They are loud, obnoxious, nosy, and so welcoming.   Anyone who comes to their winery is instantly taken under Cora's, the owner, protective wing and welcomed into their crazy family.

When River arrived at the winery, peeking in the window, living in her car I knew that she would be accepted with open arms but I also knew that there was more to her story.   It didn't take long for me to figure out what drew her to come to the winery and why she was interested in Lanie.  I liked that Jill Shalvis had them become friends first then told the rest of their connection.   I cannot blame River for coming to the winery.   It was probably the only way that she could survive with her baby.

Mark... oh Mark and his gorgeous, naughty, sweet, lovable twin girls.   I loved the paragraphs that included the twins and Mark.   Those twins were too much and I could picture their cute blonde heads, the two of them wandering the winery and causing havoc to the adults.   And Mark with his big bad teddy bear attitude trying to keep them in line, going to work, and visiting Lanie all while to hide his heart.    There was no doubt that his heart was going to bust open when he first set his eyes on Lanie and I was excited to see how long he could hold out and how he would convince Lanie that she could trust a man again.

Jill Shalvis is so talented.   She is a definite must-read author for me.     I recommend picking up Rainy Day Friends and then going back and reading the rest of her books.

REVIEW of The Widow of Wall Street by Randy Susan Meyers

Hardcover, 339 pages
Published April 11th 2017 by Atria Books

What’s real in a marriage built on sand and how do you abandon a man you’ve loved since the age of fifteen?

Phoebe sees the fire in Jake Pierce’s belly from the moment they meet as teenagers in Brooklyn. Eventually he creates a financial dynasty and she trusts him without hesitation—unaware his hunger for success hides a dark talent for deception.

When Phoebe learns—along with the rest of the world—that her husband’s triumphs are the result of an elaborate Ponzi scheme her world unravels. Lies underpin her life and marriage. As Jake’s crime is uncovered, the world obsesses about Phoebe. Did she know her life was fabricated by fraud? Did she partner with her husband in hustling billions from pensioners, charities, and CEOs? Was she his accomplice in stealing from their family and neighbors?

Debate rages as to whether love and loyalty blinded her to his crimes or if she chose to live in denial. While Jake is trapped in the web of his own deceit, Phoebe is faced with an unbearable choice. Her children refuse to see her if she remains at their father’s side, but abandoning Jake, a man she’s known since childhood, feels cruel and impossible.

From Brooklyn to Greenwich to Manhattan, from penthouse to prison, with tragic consequences rippling well beyond Wall Street, The Widow of Wall Street exposes a woman struggling to redefine her life and marriage as everything she thought she knew crumbles around her.

My Thoughts…

I was not sure what to expect with a Ponzi Wall Street money scheme story.    This is not my normal reading material, usually, I would pass on it but since Randy Susan Meyers wrote the book and I am a fan of hers I gave it a try and love it.    I was in a reading funk and it got me right out of it.   I devoured each page, couldn’t stop reading and felt connected to the characters.     I needed Phoebe to stand up for herself and do what was right for her.   The children were a small part of the story but I love that they were strong, smart, and willing to protect themselves.   I wanted Jake to realize he messed up and admit it.

Randy Susan Meyers takes the young love of two 15-year-olds and shows how it can grow stronger as they marry, have kids, and grow old together.     Phoebe and Jake wanted it all from a young age.   They wanted true love, successful careers, amazing kids, and a life together.   While they got it all there was also secrets, darkness, and trouble in their relationship.

This is a love story, the story of a man wanting to have it all and share it all with his family.   But it is also a look at the trouble that money can cause.   Once Jake got a taste of money he just wanted more and more.   He was always thinking he’d catch up, have enough, be happy enough but it just never happen and he got caught.    Jake was portrayed as a guy who didn’t start out to be shady, he wanted to be successful and provide for his family and then it just snowballed on him.    Yet, he never admitted he was wrong.    He never accepted that he messed up and because of that he never let his wife go.   He expected her to stand by him and to go down with him.

Phoebe was wonderful.   She stood by her man, took the brunt of the world outside of prison, and stayed strong.    I want to believe that was love but I really think it was because she didn’t know who she was without Jake.     She was always Jake’s girlfriend or Jake’s wife.      She didn’t know how to be Phoebe.  I enjoyed seeing her becoming strong, becoming self-sufficient and figuring out how to be without the man who gave her everything.

The Wall Street Widow is a story about money, greed, love, betrayal and so much more.    I loved the entire story from beginning to end.    Pick up your copy immediately.

REVIEW of The Intermission by Elyssa Friedland

Hardcover, 368 pages
Expected publication: July 3rd 2018 by Berkley Books

Have you ever had a secret so gut-wrenching you couldn't share it with anyone, not even the person who shares your bed? Told from the alternating perspectives of a husband and wife who both have something to hide, this incisive novel pulls back the curtain on a seemingly-happy marriage, posing the question: how much do we really know--and how much should we want to know--about the people we love the most?

After six years of marriage, the unshakeable confidence Cass felt on her wedding day is decidedly gone. Jonathan, on the other hand, is still smitten with Cass. It's true that the personality quirks he once found charming in his wife--her complexity, her high standards, her refusal to clean the dishes--are beginning to grate. But for him, these are minor challenges in an otherwise healthy relationship. So it comes as a complete shock to Jonathan when Cass suddenly requests a marital 'intermission': a six-month separation during which they'll figure out if the comfortable life they've built together is, in fact, the one they both want.

After Cass and Jonathan devise an absurd and jet lag-inducing plan to swap custody of their beloved dog every thirty days, they decide that (aside from their monthly canine exchange) the intermission will be a time for self-reflection--and not a time for talking. But, as the months pass, Cass and Jonathan begin to see that the very worst of their problems are rooted in just these kinds of calculated silences--and in a delicate web of blistering secrets they may never be ready to share.

My Thoughts…

I like the idea of this book.   The idea that marriage can get hum-drum boring is not a new idea.   I am happily married and there are times that we have to shake it up some.   That is what Cass wants to do.   She needs to make sure that she is happy with her life before starting a family and committing to the rest of her life with Jonathan.   Do I agree with her way?  Nope, not even a little but I respect that she doesn’t want to start a family and then tear it apart if she is that unhappy that she cannot stay with her husband.

The book is divided into three parts with alternating chapters between Cass and Jonathan.   There were quite a bit of repetitive thoughts, a lot of talking about what might happen, what could happen, what should happen but yet not much happen.  I struggle to connect with anyone in the story.  Cass seemed to want the separation but then didn’t want Jonathan to find any happiness without her.    Jonathan was a pushover.   He couldn’t make Cass stay but yet gave in to every request she made without pushing for what he wanted.

The premise of the story was interesting and the ending was predictable.  I couldn’t not finish the book once I started reading because I had to know if Cass and Jonathan actually ended up together but it was slow reading for me.

REVIEW of When Archie Met Rosie: An Unexpected Love Story by Lynda Renham

An Unexpected Love Story.

Rosie Foster has two dreams. The first is to move off the Tradmore Estate, and the second is to see Paris. Archie wants for nothing. He has his five-bedroom house but no one to share it with now that his beloved wife, Cath, has died.  And then … Holly has a disastrous night out and, against all the odds, Archie meets Rosie.

A funny, sad and poignant tale of how love can be found in the strangest of places.

My Thoughts…

Rosie wins money and Frank, her husband gets run over by a pizza delivery truck.    With Frank’s death and her win, the people wanting to get her hands on her money come out of the woodwork.     Then she meets Archie, who is really Alfred but what’s important about a name.    This was the first thing that made me giggle.    Rosie just couldn’t get Alfred’s name correct and he gives up on correcting her.     The fun, the entertainment, and the giggles continue throughout the rest of the book.

The book is set in the UK and the language in ‘local English’ but I found myself really enjoying the different wording, the different spellings, and the different conversations.    The last few books by Lynda Renham have been thrillers, which I enjoyed, but I liked that she returned to the style of writing that I first knew her for.     The quirky characters, the fun storyline, and the great friendships are what drew me to Lynda as an author.

When Archie Met Rosie is a book for all readers.    There is life lessons, friendships, family drama, and so much fun within the story.   I recommend picking up your own copy.

Author Bio –

Laurie Benson is an award-winning author who writes flirty and frisky Regency romance novels. She began her writing career as an advertising copywriter, where she learned more than you could ever want to know about hot dogs and credit score reports. Her novel An Unexpected Countess was voted Harlequin’s 2017 Hero of the Year by readers.

When she isn't at her laptop avoiding laundry, Laurie can be found browsing antique shops, going on ridiculously long hikes, or sitting in her car on the school pickup line. She lives with her husband and two sons in a house filled with testosterone—even her bunny is a boy.
