When Annie returns to Afghanistan to cover peace talks between the government and the Taliban, she takes a side trip to Wad Qol, where she discovers that not everyone wants the new school. Sabotage delays construction, and when a worker ends up dead, it’s clear the militants are to blame. It’s also obvious that they know exactly where Annie is.

My Thoughts:  I have realized that I usually read the same style, similar settings too much.   I probably would have passed on this book only because I do not usually read about Afghanistan and the lives of their citizens, but I chose to pick it up because it was recommended to me by someone who really knows my book likes and I am thrilled to say I devoured the book.   I enjoyed learning about the customs of a country I was not familiar with.  The lives they live are so different than the life I live but there are many similarities.  

Annie Hawkins is a heading back to Afghanistan to cover a special assignment but first she is going to right some wrongs that happened to her best friend and his daughter.   This leads her directly into danger.  I love her spunk, her knowing of right from wrong, her willingness to put herself in danger to find the answers she needs, and the lengths she will go to save her friends. 

I did not realize this is the second in the series until I finished the book.  I love when a series is standalones but I am going to find a copy of the first book just to learn more about a culture I do not know enough about and characters that I truly enjoyed getting to know.

My Thoughts:  What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, until she moves in next door to you.   I love it!    Beatrice is a successful businesswoman with a growing company, a large close family, and amazing friends.   Her love life is nonexistence, and no one can compare to that one night in Vegas.  Then she moves in next to The Cathy Hill and meets her son.   The son is the man, Jackson, from Vegas.   You would think it would be easy, just pick up where you left off and let the sparks fly.   The issue is that Jackson’s dad and Beatrice’s family are in a feud.  Neither family will be happy with this match.

 

I love the heat and sparks that fly between them.  I almost expected the book to catch on fire.  Yet the book has such a sweet side.   Jackson and Beatrice had respect and love for each other but they both also did not want to hurt their families.   Family is important to them both and they must weigh the risks before they can declare their love for each other.  I hated to see them struggle but I knew that they had to figure out how important they were to each other before they could move on and become the couple they were destined to be. 

Tif Marcelo is phenomenal.   She has quickly become a must-read author for me.  Her books stay on my bookshelf and I recommend them often.

My Thoughts:  This book, I will be talking about it for a while.   The family dynamics have something that everyone can relate to.   While hopefully, you will not relate to all of it, there will probably be something that you can relate to.  There are family secrets, misunderstandings, siblings at odds, a mother on the outside looking in, and a grandmother who just wants her family to get along and is willing to be sneaky to get them all in the same room.   Iris is the hero, she is the grandmother who tricks, nicely, her granddaughters to both come to stay with her, who puts her daughter in the same room as her granddaughters to try to mend those fences, and who loves them all 100%.

 

Vale and Blythe are half-sisters, but the only sisters each of them has.   There have been so many misunderstandings in their relationship that they no longer talk but are now thrown together to help Iris.  I enjoyed that their relationship was not instantly mended.   They had to fight it out, talk it out, and see that each of them is not perfect.   Both girls have problems in their lives and can use a friendly ear to help them find their ways.   When things got tough, they ended up sticking together to help each other out. 

Christine Nolfi wrote a book that I had a hard time putting down.  I quickly became invested in the character's lives and had high hopes for where this story would go.   Christine took it even farther than I expected and I love the ending.  I will definitely talk about this book to all my friends and recommend everyone purchase their own copies.

JULES

“I’m so jealous, Jules.” Bryn perched on the end of one of the beds in our hotel room at Cascade Locks, watching me pack gear. The thin, gray light of pre-dawn filtered through a crack in gold curtains that’d seen better days.

I tucked a bag of snacks and my rain jacket into the top of my backpack, cinched the drawcord, and buckled the lid with a solid click. “Of what, twelve guys dumping me for their exes in a row? I’m sure we could arrange that for you too. If you ever really start dating again.”

“Ha. Funny.” She toed my calf. “You’re taking five weeks off to go backpacking solo. Who cares why?”

Tingles of excitement zoomed around in my chest and I flashed her a grin. “Yeah. Dealing with zero assholes and zero clients for more than a month does sound pretty heavenly, doesn’t it?”

She grinned back. “Like I said, totally jealous. At least of your trip.” Her expression went serious. “I still can’t believe the next guy you date is gonna be unlucky number thirteen, though.”

“Yeah. I’ve thought about that. Probably too much. Definitely enough to jinx the next one for sure. So, I’m swearing off men for at least a year to restart the count.” I hesitated, the excitement buzz fading. “A year is enough time to consider it a clean dating slate, right?”

“Wait. You mean you’re swearing off dating, or swearing off sex too?”

The last eight years had been nothing but suckage on the relationship front. It’d probably take more than a year to fix my shit. But nothing would change if I didn’t change something. “Yes. Both. All of it.”

Bryn eyes widened. “You’re serious.”

“Dead.” Bending, I tugged the rough nylon laces of my left boot. The well-worn leather snugged around my foot. “I’m never gonna figure out anything buried in too much work plus too many bad dates.”

“When did you decide this?”

“Last night.” I shouldered my pack and adjusted the straps until the familiar weight settled on the tops of my hipbones. “What I’ve been doing isn’t working. It’s time to take a big step back and focus on myself for longer than just a few weeks.”

“I guess that’s one way to break the pattern.” Bryn opened the door, and we stepped outside into early morning stillness. “And yes, a year is definitely long enough to clean your dating slate.”

Fog tendrils drifted from the Columbia River across the half-empty parking lot. The air hung thick with moisture and cedar and the sweet mustiness of damp soil. The best smell in the world after too many days breathing city fumes.

“I sure as hell hope so. If not, at least maybe I can figure out what to do about my business. I can’t keep working this much.”

We strolled across the lot side-by-side, the chill air nipping my skin through my nylon hiking pants and shirt, waking me up. The sky glowed marigold behind the inky silhouettes of the mountains.

“You’ll come up with a plan. You always do.”

“Thanks for the vote of confidence.” We crossed the empty highway, walked a few hundred yards, and turned off. Gravel crunched under our soles. “And thanks for driving me down here from Seattle. And picking me up at the other end.”

“Of course. That’s what best friends are for.” She wrapped a hand around my arm and leaned in, hugging one of my few body parts not covered by my backpack. “Though I still wish I was going with you. I could use a break from assholes and clients, too.”

The first golden rays of sunlight slanted through the tree branches, lighting the dirt road ahead. “We’ll have to plan a girlfriends’ trip once I get back.”

“I’m holding you to that.” Her warm hand tightened on my biceps. “Maybe we can convince Aly to come with us for once.”

I snorted. “We’ll get Aly on a backpacking trip when pigs fly. But I’m all for trying.”

A handful of parked cars and a dark brown trailhead kiosk appeared, marking the southern end of the Pacific Crest Trail through Washington. And my starting point. And the start of five weeks of solitary bliss in one of my favorite places in the whole world.

Bryn pulled out her phone. “Hey. Let me grab a shot of you in front of the sign, to commemorate the moment.”

“Okay.” I took a few steps back.

“Say, single life.”

I popped a hip and smiled for the camera. “Single life.”

“Perfect.” She slipped her phone into her pocket. “I love you, girlfriend. Stay safe out there and call me whenever you hit civilization.”

“I will.” My throat tightened. “I love you, too.”

My Thoughts:  Oh Melissa, the stories you write.   Always Her Love is the story of single dad Levi and his friend Tara.   Tara has had a crush on Levi forever but has kept her feelings in check for fear of losing him as a friend.  I LOVE watching Levi realize his feelings for Tara and then carefully convincing her that he was worth the risk.  I did have to remind myself that they were long time friends a couple times as it seemed their relationship moved quickly but their relationship started with them in love with each other already.   

Joey, Levi’s little girl, is adorable.  I really enjoyed her part in their story.   Her innocence at Levi and Tara’s relationship, her total love for Tara, and her love of life is infectious.  Every scene that she appeared in is my favorite.  I waited to see what her reaction would be or what she would say.  She may be the biggest part of the love between Levi and Tara. 

Always Her Love is a great addition to Melissa Foster’s Steele’s at Silver Island series.   The best part, that each book is their own story.  You can read them in an order.  I recommend picking up your own copy.
