Review for Better to Trust by Heather Frimmer

Better to Trust by  Heather Frimmer

Paperback, 320 pages

Publication: September 21st 2021 by Wyatt-MacKenzie

Genre:  Womens Fiction, LGBT, Family Drama

From Goodreads:  When trust is violated, can it ever be recovered?

Alison Jacobs needs brain surgery and places ultimate trust in her sister's husband, Grant Kaplan, a world-renowned neurosurgeon and expert in treating her condition. But Grant is hiding a dark secret which threatens the outcome: an addiction to prescription pills. As Alison struggles to rebuild her life, Grant's daughter, Sadie, spends more time with a new friend. Frustrated that her parents exclude her from the conversations about her beloved aunt, Sadie makes increasingly risky choices which could endanger not only her, but her entire family.

Alison is also harboring her own secret-an extramarital affair with a woman. Her close call with mortality spurs her to take a closer look at her marriage, explore her newfound sexuality and figure out what she wants for her future. How will she rebuild her life and move forward? Can she find a way to repair her broken relationship with her only sister?

Secrets swirling around drug use and sexual identity must be dealt with in order for the family to learn to trust each other again.

My Thoughts:  I started this book one morning and could not put it down.   I devoured every word, every chapter, and every page.  I loved the characters, even the ones I did not like.   The storyline pulled me in from the very beginning and kept me turning pages until I read the very last page.    As I finished the book I just sat and thought about it.   Family is everything but what if I had been Alison, would I be able to get past what had happen to her?   I hope that I would be able to, but it would not be easy.

Better to Trust is told in the present time, Alison has had her surgery and is struggling to recover, and in the past, the reason for the surgery, what happened, and what Alison’s life pre-surgery was like.  I really enjoy this format as it gives the reader a unique look at the reasoning and logic behind many of the decisions that are made.  I could understand Alison’s feelings about her family, her life, and her future since I was familiar with what had happen leading up to the current time.

This novel is a story of family, forgiveness, and finding yourself.   I will happily recommend this book over and over again.

Book Review for The Spires by Kate Moretti

 The Spires by  Kate Moretti

Kindle Edition, 316 pages

Publication: September 21st 2021 by Thomas & Mercer

Genre:  Mystery, Thriller

From Goodreads:  A troubled woman becomes consumed by a past she’s desperate to forget in this unsettling psychological thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of The Vanishing Year.

Strung between two teenagers, an unemployed husband, and a tenuous career, Penelope Cox barely has her life together when the past comes knocking at her door. Willa Blaine, her old roommate, needs her help: refuge from an abusive husband. “Two weeks tops,” she says―but it’s not the imposition that bothers Penelope; it’s the memories Willa brings with her.

Twenty years earlier, Penelope, Willa, and three friends lived together in a converted church. Insular and closed off from the rest of the world, the five roommates formed their own dysfunctional family, celebrating the pinnacle of their lives; they called themselves “the Spires.” But nights of wild parties gave way to a darker undercurrent: jealousy, resentment, unrequited love, and obsession. Tensions boiled over during a night of debauchery that ended in a deadly fire, leaving the Spires scattered and forever changed.

Now Willa is the perfect houseguest: accommodating, helpful, bringing a newfound sense of excitement to the Cox household. Yet Penelope can’t help but feel the cracks in her life widen as she begins to question Willa’s motives. Everyone has secrets, it seems―and the fire may have brought down the Spires, but not everything burned was forgotten.

My Thoughts:  I am a fan of Kate Moretti so when I heard she had a new book coming out I knew that I needed to get my hands on it.   The way she writes pulls me in and keeps my guessing as I turn page after page looking for the answers to all my questions.

The Spires seemed different than her others to me.   I am not exactly sure what was different, but I just was not quite as pulled in as I usually am.  I struggled to connect with the characters.  I HATED Penelope’s husband.   I doubted that Penelope had any clue what was going on with anything or anyone, even though much of the story was happening in her house.   Willa, ugh…  that’s all I can say.

I will say that the BIG twist was one that I did not quite have figured out.  When it was revealed, I looked back and saw many clues that would have given it away had I caught on when I first read them.   I liked that I did not have it all figured out.  I liked that I was kept wondering and hoping for the ending I wanted.

If you are looking for a mystery thriller that will keep you guessing I would suggest checking out Kate Moretti’s The Spires.

Book Review for The Happy Accidents by Jamie Beck

The Happy Accidents by  Jamie Beck

Paperback, 336 pages

Publication: September 21st 2021 by Montlake

Genre:  Romance, Womens Fiction

While at a casino to celebrate her birthday, Jessie Clarke proposes a pact to her reserved sister, Liz, and their childhood friend Chloe: the three women will say yes to any adventure that comes their way. Jessie is mourning her recent divorce, so the other two reluctantly agree. Twelve hours later, everyone awakens to the shocking consequences of their behavior. One viral video throws Liz’s high-profile television career and reputation into question. A major loss at the craps table rocks the foundation of Chloe’s staid marriage. And Jessie’s desperate bid to unblock her artistic creativity results in her facing the most difficult choice of her life. Staring down the crossroads, each woman finds her relationships tested–with herself, with each other, and with loves both old and new. At every turn, they struggle not to let fear decide their fates. Will they give in, or will their misadventures lead to the greatest fulfillment of all?

My Thoughts:  Three women celebrate a birthday by making a pact to say yes to adventure.   They say yes and their lives are forever changed.   I loved how these women came together to celebrate after years of friendship and sisterhood.   They each stepped out and their lives were changed.   I was worried that their friendships would suffer, their lives would crash but instead I saw how they cheered each other on, listened closely to each other’s worries, and supported each other even when they did not agree with the other’s choices.

The Happy Accident tells the story of three women in alternating points of view.   The story moves quickly but with a lot of depth.  The characters were well developed, and I found myself caring what choices they were making and how they would find their happiness.   Liz takes a chance and opens herself to love and a new career.   Jessie finds a new career and acceptance that she did not know that she desperately needed.  Chloe stands on her own two feet, finding happiness and independence that she desperately needed.

This is a heart to heart, true friends, finding yourself book.  I really need this book in my life.  I was lost in a story that took me away from the craziness of my own life and let me meet three new friends.

Review for Make Me by Evelyn Sola

Falling in love is the last thing single mom Laci Hogan is looking for. Too bad her new neighbor didn’t get the memo. Cooper Stevens isn’t a stranger to hard work and when he wants something, he won’t stop until he gets it. Fall for this hard-working hottie in Make Me by Evelyn Sola, a Widow Romance, the next book in the Blue Collar Romance Series.

Read Now!

Laci Hogan isn’t looking for love when she moves back to Oak Bend. Coming home is all about Laci gaining her independence she once lost. Besides, getting over a rocky past and losing her husband is more than enough for her to juggle while raising her two-year-old daughter but old acquaintance - Cooper Stevens can be persistent when it comes to getting what he wants. No stranger to hard work, he’s willing to do all it takes to prove to his new neighbor Laci that she doesn’t have to do life alone and that with the right person, a relationship makes life better - oh so much better. Will Cooper make her see that this could be all the happiness she never knew she was looking for?

My Thoughts…

Make Me is the third book in the Blue Collar Romance books.   This one had me blushing.  It was steamier, hotter, sexier, and everything else more than the first two in this series.   I am not usually a huge fan of the extra sexy books and had thoughts of stopping and reading but I really really liked how Cooper was with Laci’s daughter.   His sweetness, softness, and understanding when dealing with a two-year-old won me over.   He was not her father, but he treated her like she is a princess.    I love how he showered her in love but also taught her to be a good girl.

The relationship between Laci and Cooper was not a surprise.  In a shorter book, there can not be too much build-up and Make Me moves right along.   They see each other, sparks fly, they play a little cat and mouse, coming together and finding the HEA.   I loved seeing how they worked through their past, figured out what they wanted their futures to be, and worked together to make it all happen while keeping Laci’s daughter's happiness in their plans.

The Blue Collar Romance series is a series of books written by different authors all with a common theme.   I love this fun series.  The books are not long, the setting is a small town, and the romance is sweet, sexy, and steamy.

Excerpt

Copyright 2021 Evelyn Sola

Just as I approach the corner, I’m hit on the shoulder by another body. I’m pushed to the wall, and the mountain of books in my hands crashes to the floor. The red folder holding my English term paper lands on top of the heap. “Watch where you’re going!” the person who bumped says. She doesn’t have the decency to stop, but by the sound of her giggles, I know who it is. And there’s no way the school’s most popular senior would give me the time of day. I sigh and drop to the floor to pick up my things. My heart starts to beat erratically because if there’s one thing I know—wherever Candace is, he’s never too far behind. I’m proven right. A pair of black boots enters my line of vision. Cooper Stevens. Those are his boots. He was wearing them the very first time I saw him, and I remember wanting to be swallowed up by the ground. The only thing that saved me from total embarrassment was the fact that I know someone like him would never notice someone like me. I hold my breath while he approaches and quickly turn to my books. Please leave. Please leave. Please leave. I busy myself arranging my books. I won’t stand up until he walks past me. Only he doesn’t. He drops down to my level and grabs my red folder. Instead of handing it to me, he opens it and starts to look through the pages. I finally find the courage to look at him, and our eyes lock. For the first time ever, I notice the hazel flecks around his brown eyes. I look away and drop my head, and because this is the day from hell, my glasses slide off my face and land on the floor. We reach for them at the same time, and his large hand ends up covering mine. I let out a small sound, and I say a silent prayer that he didn’t hear it. I note the contrast of our skin tones, his white hand covering my brown one before I pull mine away. He lifts my glasses and brings them to my face. I’m as still as a statue while I look down at the linoleum floor. He moves closer and slides the glasses back onto my face. I take a deep breath and bask in the smell of his leather jacket mixed with his fruity shampoo. When he gets the glasses on my face, he moves his hands behind my ears to make sure they are secure. “You okay?” he asks. He lifts my chin and forces me to look at him. Like a deer in headlights, all I can do is stare. “Be careful next time, Laces,” he whispers. I lick my dry lips. “Um, my name is—” The words get locked in my throat. I grab my books and finally stand up. He stands right along with me. When we’re both upright, he takes a step closer. “Your name is what?” he asks. He hands me my folder, and when I take it from him, his fingers touch mine. “Um, my name is—” I clear my throat and try again. The entire time he stares at me with an expression I can’t interpret. “My name isn’t, um—” I never get a chance to finish my sentence. “Cooper!” Candace yells in the hallway. She runs over to us and grabs the sleeve of his leather jacket. “Come on! What are you still doing here with her?” She points at me without bothering to look in my direction. “Let’s go. You did your good deed of the day. Maybe you should tell her to run a flat iron through that hair.” The entire time he was being dragged away, his head was turned in my direction, until they turned the corner and he disappeared
