Review for American Princess: A Novel of First Daughter Alice Roosevelt by Stephanie Marie Thornton

Paperback, 448 pages
Published March 12th 2019 by Berkley Books

A sweeping novel from renowned author Stephanie Marie Thornton...

Alice may be the president's daughter, but she's nobody's darling. As bold as her signature color Alice Blue, the gum-chewing, cigarette-smoking, poker-playing First Daughter discovers that the only way for a woman to stand out in Washington is to make waves--oceans of them. With the canny sophistication of the savviest politician on the Hill, Alice uses her celebrity to her advantage, testing the limits of her power and the seductive thrill of political entanglements.

But Washington, DC is rife with heartaches and betrayals, and when Alice falls hard for a smooth-talking congressman it will take everything this rebel has to emerge triumphant and claim her place as an American icon. As Alice soldiers through the devastation of two world wars and brazens out a cutting feud with her famous Roosevelt cousins, it's no wonder everyone in the capital refers to her as the Other Washington Monument--and Alice intends to outlast them all.

My Thoughts…

With each historical fiction I read I find myself looking for more.   Stephanie Thornton has pulled me deeper into the historical world and I am loving all that I am learning about our history.     Alice Roosevelt is someone who I knew very little about but I now find myself looking her up online and learning more about her.

I love how even though the world frowned on Alice’s way of life.   She lived life to the fullest and didn’t really worry about what the rest of the world would think.    She used her knowledge of politics to further her causes and to make political pushes for a better world.    Her determination and ability to hold her own in almost any situation made her a force to be reckoned with both personally and politically.

American Princess tells the story of Alice but it also gives us a glimpse into life during the Roosevelt presidency and the world during that time.    I liked that it wasn’t just set in the United States but also throughout the rest of the world bringing to the book a broader storyline.     I learned so much about the world, the United States, and the presidency.

Exclusive Excerpt:

I walk down the hall, and turn the corner into my room to find, to my shock and dismay, a wall of dripping wet muscle standing at the foot of my bed, toweling himself off. I gasp, clutching my palm to the bare spot on my chest between the cups of my bra—thankfully, a t-shirt model that offers at least a little coverage. Hearing me, he turns, holding the towel just so that the most critical information is unavailable. “Hey, you’re home!” Noah takes three long strides toward me and leans forward to hug me. I put my palm out and it lands firmly in the middle of his perfect, muscular chest. “You’re naked! You can’t hug me naked! It’s weird!” I exclaim. “You’re naked too!” He argues, wrapping the towel around his waist and folding it into a not-very-secure-looking knot at the side. I silently will the knot to fail and expose the only bit of Noah Adler that I’ve never seen, but sadly I still have not developed telekinetic powers, so nothing happens. “There, better?” He asks, palms up. He doesn’t give me a chance to answer and instead wraps thick, muscular forearms and defined biceps around me as he pulls me into his sculpted torso. “I missed you!” He says, laying his cheek against the top of my head. I wrap my arms around his midsection and look up as I give him a squeeze, carefully jutting my ass out so my belly doesn’t make contact with what I imagine is a sizable and delicious member beneath the towel he’s barely wearing. “I missed you too. You should’ve come with us,” I say, closing my eyes as I do a happy dance on the inside because he came to see me after all. “I’m not a Bailey. No Bailey family adventures for me,” he laughs. “But I am going to need you to tell me every detail, Ariel.” I squirm away from him. “Well, that didn’t take long. I’m over missing you now.”

Review for THE GREAT PRETENDERS by Laura Kalpakian

Outraged by her grandfather's illicit affair with Empire Pictures’ latest femme fatale, Roxanne Granville forsakes her position as Hollywood royalty and rejects the man who raised her, determined to strike out on her own. Backed by little more than the stubborn grit she inherited from her beloved grandmother, Roxanne sets up shop as a low-budget film agent for budding screenwriters.

When an old friend, exiled from Hollywood and Empire Pictures by her grandfather for being a Communist sympathizer, begs for her help, Roxanne decides to right the wrongs committed by her family by selling his script under someone else’s name. After all, it’s what her grandmother would have wanted.

Soon Roxanne finds herself at the helm of a lucrative business, having landed her secret clients a handful of major studio deals through willing front men. Her newfound freedom leads her to a passionate relationship with Terrence Dexter, an African American journalist and jazz aficionado. But Hollywood is ruthless when it senses a scandal. How long will it take before all of Roxanne's success comes crumbling down?

My Thoughts…

Picture a time when Reds (communists) are being blackballed, colored and whites are not allowed to date, and television is just starting to come into its own.   That is the timing of The Great Pretenders.    Roxanne is the granddaughter of the head of a movie studio, the daughter of a big-time actor and has lived a privileged life without much thought to how she got there.

I love, love, love how strong Roxanne is.    She stands up to her grandfather, she starts making waves in the movie world with her scripts and then has a relationship that will never be accepted in California.   As she stands up for those that Hollywood has pushed aside, she proves that she has a strength that will get her where she wants to go and that she has the connections to make things happen.     She knows that she has to trust people to help her along, keep her secrets, and make things happen but mostly it is all on her own strength and will power.

The names mentioned throughout this book, the movies mentioned, the television shows named are all iconic names.   They bring to life the timing of the book, the way life was at the time, and how the world worked in a time that maybe isn’t quite so different from the time we live in now.   While it was decades ago, there are plenty of similarities that I saw while reading this book and it opened my eyes to some of the world we live in.

Review for The Missing Years by Lexie Elliott

Expected publication: April 23rd 2019 by Berkley

An eerie, old Scottish manor in the middle of nowhere that’s now hers.

Ailsa Calder has inherited half of a house. The other half belongs to a man who disappeared without a trace twenty-seven years ago—her father.

Leaving London behind to settle the inheritance from her mother’s estate, Ailsa returns to her childhood home, nestled amongst the craggy peaks of the Scottish Highlands, joined by the half-sister who’s almost a stranger to her.

Ailsa can’t escape the claustrophobic feeling that the house itself is watching her—as if her past hungers to consume her. She also can’t ignore how the neighbourhood animals refuse to set one foot within the gates of the garden.

When the first nighttime intruder shows up, Ailsa fears that the manor’s careless rugged beauty could cost her everything.

My Thoughts…

Ailsa Calder has invited her sister to live with her.   I loved that she opened her heart and her home to a sister that she hasn’t had a good relationship with for quite some time.   Things start happening when they move into the house that is in the middle of nowhere.     These things only seem to happen to Ailsa and she isn’t sure if she is going crazy or if she someone is trying to chase her away from the house she just inherited.    I wondered if something was haunting the house, was someone setting it up to scare Ailsa away, what was going on.

The writing was good, it was not a quick read.   I found it easy to put the book down and walk away but I was always pulled back to picking it up.    The characters were not easy to connect with, I think there was too much history that wasn’t told between them to be able to connect with them.   Both sisters seemed to keep their guard up and keep their hearts protected.

I was excited to see how it would all come together.   The ending surprised me, yet looking back I can see how it ended as it did.    Overall, I enjoyed the story.    I liked the setting, and the characters kept it all interesting.
