 EXCERPT

Seconds after hearing the click of the front door shutting, his mouth was at her ear. His fingers slipped beneath the straps on her shoulder, lifting the dress above her head and tossing it on the end of the bed.
Spikes of sensual energy gathered between them. Reed nuzzled the rasp of his stubble into the sensitive spot on her neck and her skin came to life beneath his firm yet gentle touch. Tremors chased down her spine and desire ached between her thighs. Never in her life had JC been so completely in tune with the bodily forces filling her physically and emotionally.
A slight giggle dissolved into a soft gasp as one arm crossed beneath her breast, pulling her closer. Gooseflesh covered her body as his lips traversed the slope of her neck and shoulder, revisiting receptive areas he’d pursued the night before.
“I don’t understand,” she murmured. Reed pressed the shape of him, rearing and stiff, against the small of her back. Her head listed back against his chest, followed a soft ambiguous cry of need. “How do you do that to me?”
He turned her to face him, cupping the tender curve of her breast. “Darlin’, in few minutes, you’re not gonna give a damn.”
Heat.
Heat spread everywhere, engulfing her senses in flames of desire. Draping her wrists over his shoulder, she raised on her tippy-toes, searching for his lips. Reed resisted her fervent urges, pulling back, not allowing her the passionate kiss she yearned for. He stared into her eyes, capturing her spirit with his ice blue eyes. Zings of pleasure chased though her and JC feared she might melt before they even started.
Unspoken words drifted between them.
Reed’s unconditional acceptance disarmed her. He accepted her commitment phobias, occasional neurotic tendencies, her fears of love, her mishaps in life and bad judgments. He understood her implicitly and appreciated her exactly as she was.
Her heart pounded. Excitement and nervousness mingled through her emotions. Her eyes drifted shut as she leaned into his chest and his hands played over her slowly, tortuously igniting a new passion within. She quivered and stumbled, falling onto the chaise behind her.
He started toward her hungrily, but she shook her head.
“No?” he asked with a questioning grin.
“No.” She shook her head again. “This isn’t exactly how I pictured this. You make me too damn nervous.” She pointed toward the bathroom. “Can you please give me two minutes?”
He bent, securing her to the hide with his thigh between her legs, possessing her mouth with long, intimate licks of his tongue. “I’ll give you three,” he assured, releasing her from his kiss and sauntering into the bathroom.
JC leapt to her feet, pacing in circles in nothing more than her white cheeky panties. “What the hell is wrong with me?” Stopping midstride, she shook out her trembling limbs. “You can do this! Pull yourself together.”
She took a few deep breaths, trying to ward off the tension looming close the surface of her thoughts. Her limbs felt weighted and encumbering, restricting her body from its natural rhythmic flow of sensual language. He’s just a man. I’ve kissed dozens of men! You’ve already had sex with him. Don’t be chicken!
She bent over, tousling her hair through her fingers and flipped her head back, letting the long caramel layers cascade down her back in sexy loose pieces.
JC plopped onto the chaise, strumming her fingers on the hide. Yeah, but damn what a man!
Nestling back into the hide, she draped her hands above her head. Unable to find the right position, she fidgeted awkwardly. “This is not comfortable,” she grumbled. “Oh, my God. What is wrong with me?”
Irritated by her own anxiety and gracelessness, she flopped to the opposite end of the chaise. Her long legs and feet dangled over the arched back and her head hung over the foot of the lounge.
Sunbeams pushing through the glass door swept across her body. Her eyes drifted shut and she drew in a deep, full breath of air and then another. The scent of his skin lingered with the warmth of the sun, caressing her senses and calming her nerves.
She startled when Reed gently placed his hand on the outside of her thigh. His naked hip brushed against her skin when he sat beside her. Her eyes remained closed as the coolness from his hand slid along her waist to her breast, resting on top of her heart.
“I know…” she panted breathily. JC placed her hand over his. “Just feel you in here.”
“That’s right, darlin’”
“I don’t know why you make me so nervous.”
“Just relax.”
Feeling his avid stare burning through closed lids and the weight of his hand dip to her breast, she slipped her tongue across her lips sensually.
“You make me nervous too,”—his breath fractured—“JC.”
Her eyes opened when he called her by name.
“We’ll figure it out together.”
Feelings of passion and adoration flourished, stringing tightly around her heart. She nodded.
“Goddess,” he hummed, wiggling his brow. The back of his hand traced lazily over her jaw and earlobe. He leaned closer, nearly kissing her before halting. “You’re beautiful. Inside and out.”

Novelista Girl by Meredith Schorr

Published by Booktrope Editions

I received my review copy from Meredith Schorr in exchange for a honest review.

Readers first met sassy Kimberly Long in Blogger Girl, and now the feisty New Yorker is back in a sequel packed with quick wit, friendship, heartache, and, of course, romance.

Kim runs the most popular chick lit book blog on the web, loves playing house with her sexy lawyer boyfriend, Nicholas, and is finally pursuing her lifelong dream to become a published author. At first glance, her life is five-pink-champagne-flutes worthy.

But is there more to the story than meets the eye?

After hearing the phrase “chick lit is dead” more times than she’s read Bridget Jones's Diary, Kim is driven to desperate measures, seeking advice from up-and-coming chick lit author, Hannah Marshak, her high school nemesis and resident “mean girl.” As if Kim doesn't have enough on her plate balancing her secretarial duties with her blog Pastel Is the New Black, shrugging off the growing pile of agent rejections, and keeping her best friend from turning green over Kim’s budding friendship with Hannah, Nicholas is so blinded by his career ambitions, he doesn't see that their home sweet home could use more than a dash of sugar.

This is the year when all of Kim's dreams—professional and romantic—are supposed to come true, but will the story have a happily ever after, or will Kim end up unpublished and all alone?

My Thoughts…

As a follow up to Blogger Girl or as a stand-a-lone this is the perfect chic-lit book.   It is proof that chic-lit is not dead as Kim, the main character, had been told many times while trying to get representation for her book.     While the book is about Kim and her many let downs in getting representation for me it was more about the relationship between Kim and Nicholas.  I also enjoyed the relationships with Bridget and Jonathon.

I found myself remembering how quickly I devoured Blogger Girl (LOVED IT!) and how much I wanted to know more about the characters.     In Novelista Girl I got that chance.      I got to catch up with Kim and her friends, seeing what they were up to, how their respective jobs were progressing, and how their relationships were going.    I was sad to see that Kim was struggling in many aspects but proud of how strong she stayed.   Even when life was throwing *stuff* at her she managed to keep plowing through.   She is allowed to be sad or feel anger at how others were treating her, yet she did not let that send her on a detour from her dream of publishing.       Meredith Schorr definitely has written a strong and independent character.

I found myself laughing at their antics, smiling at the friendships, frowning when things did not go as I had hoped, and having tears when I feared that the characters were going to end up on the wrong path.     This is a MUST READ to anyone who is looking for a fun, easy, relatable, chic-lit story.

City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments #1) by Cassandra Clare

Hardcover, 485 pages
Published March 27th 2007 by Margaret K. McElderry Books

When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder― much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing―not even a smear of blood―to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know...

Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare's ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end.

My Thoughts...

City of Bones was recommended to me when I asked my Mom's Book Club what to read.  I was in a funk and nothing was staying with me.   It was a weekend when I started 3 books and couldn't get into any of them.   I am a huge fan of paranormal stories and this was their suggestion.    I purchased it from Amazon and read all 485 pages in two days.

I read other reviews and saw that it was compared to Harry Potter and Twilight both series that I loved.    I did not really see the connection other than that it could be enjoyed by Young Adults as well as Older Adults.    There were young characters with special talents that were trying to learn what their future would hold.   There were also vampires, werewolves, and faeries but these were mostly secondary characters.

As I continued to read page after page I found myself falling farther and farther into the storyline.    I will read the rest of this series but I was not pulled to purchase all the books right away.       I am also excited to hear that this is coming out as a TV series with each book getting their own series.

If you are a paranormal story lover this is the book for you.    I highly recommend picking this book up.

What She Knew by Gilly Macmillan

Published December 1, 2015 by William Morrow Paperbacks

I received my review copy from Lauren Truskowski at Harper Collins Publishing in exchange for a honest review.

In a heartbeat, everything changes…

Rachel Jenner is walking in a Bristol park with her eight-year-old son, Ben, when he asks if he can run ahead. It’s an ordinary request on an ordinary Sunday afternoon, and Rachel has no reason to worry—until Ben vanishes.

Police are called, search parties go out, and Rachel, already insecure after her recent divorce, feels herself coming undone. As hours and then days pass without a sign of Ben, everyone who knew him is called into question, from Rachel’s newly married ex-husband to her mother-of-the-year sister. Inevitably, media attention focuses on Rachel too, and the public’s attitude toward her begins to shift from sympathy to suspicion.

As she desperately pieces together the threadbare clues, Rachel realizes that nothing is quite as she imagined it to be, not even her own judgment. And the greatest dangers may lie not in the anonymous strangers of every parent’s nightmares, but behind the familiar smiles of those she trusts the most.

Where is Ben? The clock is ticking...

My Thoughts…

The kidnapping of a child is not an easy topic to talk about or write about.     The characters feelings, the police or detective work, and the emotions of all the people involved are not something that is easy to share with readers.    Gilly Macmillan covered all of this and more in her debut novel.      What She Knew is not written with the feel of a debut book.

While the book is fiction, there is a feel of reality.    The use of social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and online blogs gave it a feel of being current.     There was also paparazzi and high media attention also was very realistic.      The “Have you seen” aspect of the media attention was very true.

The kidnapping is the main story within this book, I was drawn to how the characters changed as the story went on.    The mother, Rachel, realizes that she was holding on to the past and judging her life in comparison to the life of her ex-husband.   She finds that it is not fair to compare and to put her son in the position to not tell her things or to leave things out.  I feel like she grew to accept the separation and understand that while it is not ideal it is okay for her son to have two families and that it was up to the adults to get along and let him feel all their love.      I felt the most connected to the mother due to the fact that I am a mother and could relate to the range of feelings that one would go through in her situation.

If you are looking for a book that will bring tears to your eyes, hope to your heart, and keep your in suspense from the very beginning to the very end this is the book for you.

Secret Sisters by Jayne Ann Krentz

Published December 8, 2015 by Berkley

I received my review copy from NetGalley with access granted from Random House Publishing for a honest review.

Madeline and Daphne were once as close as sisters—until a secret tore them apart. Now it might take them to their graves.

They knew his name, the man who tried to brutally attack twelve-year-old Madeline in her grandmother's hotel. They thought they knew his fate. He wouldn't be bothering them anymore...ever. Still their lives would never be the same.

Madeline has returned to Washington after her grandmother's mysterious death. And at the old, abandoned hotel—a place she never wanted to see again—a dying man’s last words convey a warning: the secrets she and Daphne believed buried forever have been discovered.

Now, after almost two decades, Madeline and Daphne will be reunited in friendship and in fear. Unable to trust the local police, Madeline summons Jack Rayner, the hotel chain’s new security expert. Despite the secrets and mysteries that surround him, Jack is the only one she trusts...and wants.

Jack is no good at relationships but he does possess a specific skill set that includes a profoundly intimate understanding of warped and dangerous minds. With the assistance of Jack's brother, Abe, a high-tech magician, the four of them will form an uneasy alliance against a killer who will stop at nothing to hide the truth....

My Thoughts…

My first Jayne Ann Krentz book and I wonder what rock I have been living under to have not read more from her.     Secret Sisters is the perfect blend of mystery, murder, suspense, and romance.   There was never a point where any of these over shadowed the rest of the story.    This is a perfectly balanced book.

Secret Sisters pulled me in from the first page and didn’t let me go until the very last page.    The plot is captivating, the characters are realistic and relatable, and the pace was perfect.      There are strong male and female characters that were able to stand up for themselves but were even better together.     The twists and turns that kept me guessing.  Just as I thought I knew where the story was heading Jayne Ann Krentz would through a new twist in and through me off my thoughts.

The romance was real.  It was not a wham, bam I love you romance.   It was developed, worked for, and not easy for Madeline and Jack.   The attraction was there, the feelings were there, yet they were timid to start a relationship with their histories.    I loved that they didn’t just fall in love and live happily ever after.    They had to work to be honest with each other and trust each other.      They built a foundation and that lead to more.

Secret Sisters is a book that I definitely recommend checking out.  Whether this is your first Jayne Ann Krentz book or one of many you have read pick this one up.

But when his cover’s blown Josh is forced to make a decision that will reroute his future.
One decision.
The hardest decision he will ever have to make in his life.
And those he meant to protect will be the ones who suffer the most…

My Thoughts…

I am a huge C. A. Harms fan but this is a new set of characters for me.    By the time I finished the first page I was hooked.     I had to know what happen to Josh.      Would he be okay?    What is his connection to Gabi?    I had so many questions so early in the book.

There were two things that hit me immediately about Josh and Gabi.   The first is that they had real jobs, Josh for the FBI and Gabi is a real estate agent.   The second is that they have normal names, I didn’t have to guess at how to pronounce them.    These both seem like little things in the scheme of the whole story but to me it was “normal” and I love that.      Neither of these characters had messed up histories, they were just dealing with their current lives and looking to the future.

The storyline was intense.    There was drugs, guns, sex, and sex trafficking.    It was not always easy to read and I did not always like what was going on but it was all part of Josh and Gabi’s story.     I found it encouraging that their relationship stayed strong through all that was going on.      They were able to trust each other, love each other, and be with each other whenever they were available.

The story ended with a HUGE cliffhanger.   I have the feeling that there are a lot of secondary characters that will become main characters in future books.      I cannot wait for more!

“There are a few twists that were cleverly placed that even I didn't see coming and the ending WOW that ending will make you want to stalk the authors ass it's a whammy!!”~ ✨✨✨✨ 4 Star Review Kitty Kats Crazy About Books
“This is a great story and one I will continue to anxiously await the next releases. I love some mafia and murder … for sure love me some hot ass FBI agents. I cant wait to read on. There is much more suffering to be dealt out.” ~✨✨✨✨✨ Ramblings From Beneath the Sheets 5 Star Review
“OMG!!!! OMG!!!! OMG!! This was the best book I have ever read in my life!!! CA went out of her comfort zone with this book. And she made a home run, Detective Joshua Phoenix is my frigging hero.”~ ✨✨✨✨✨ Goodreads Reviewer 5 Star Review
“I like the red ones,” Josh said before turning back toward the display of lingerie. “Oh, and this color. Is that teal?” He lifted up the pair of panties and held them out before him.
I smiled as a younger guy three feet away ducked his head in embarrassment.
“Now these would look fucking amazing on you. Damn, baby.” Josh’s eyes gleamed in excitement as he looked up at me. “I may go broke if you keep bringing me to places like these.”
I giggled as I grabbed the pink, lacy, and completely see-through nightie he held in his other hand.
“We’ll take one of these in every color you have,” he hollered to the clerk.
I hid my head against his chest and tickled his sides.
“What?” he grunted and tried to pull back from my assault. “You can’t blame me for trying, sweetheart.
Forget about getting dressed daily. I think you should live in these nighties.”
I tilted my head and looked up at him. “You are insatiable.” I rose up on my tiptoes, bringing my lips close to his. “And extremely adorable.”
He closed the distance and kissed me, wrapping his arm around my waist securely. His tongue rolled with mine, and for a moment I forgot we were standing in the center of a department store. Someone cleared their throat, and I broke the kiss to look over my shoulder. An older salesperson was giving us a disapproving glare.
“Sorry,” I offered. When I turned back to face Josh, he was grinning from ear to ear.
“So—” He waggled his eyebrows suggestively. “—we are getting some of these. Right?”
I lifted up the light pink nightie and shook it in front of his face. “We’ll get this one and the red one,” I assured him as I walked toward the sales clerk at the checkout counter. When I looked back over my shoulder, Josh was smiling brightly and following close behind.
“Now that’s my girl. Looks like tonight we’re staying in.”
I rolled my eyes and turned forward again as he chuckled.

C.A. Harms is like any other addicted reader. She enjoys happy endings and HEA love stories. She hasn't always been a lover of Romance and had once been addicted to a good Mystery. Just recently she has taken on a new liking and now is a full blown Romance novel addict.
She lives in Illinois and enjoys spending time with her husband and two children. You will always find her with her kindle or paperback in hand as it is her favorite pass time.
