Before the Storm (Stillwater Bay Novella) by Steena Holmes

Before a town is rocked by violence, the little town of Stillwater Bay appeared to be getting ready for their upcoming summer tourist season. In the midst of annual preparations for their summer festival, marriages are crumbling, friendships are barely surviving, families are growing and faith is being tested.

Little did they know the hidden danger lurking amongst their tight-knit community.

This novella gives you a glimpse into the town of Stillwater Bay and its residents. You will see what their lives were like BEFORE the storm that rocked their little community descended upon them.

My Thoughts…

With all the violence I am hearing about in the news at schools throughout the nation, I was unsure what to think of a series of books being written surrounding a shooting at a community elementary school.    I now am sure that I will have to read this entire series.

In Before the Storm, Steena Holmes is introducing us to the families that lives will be forever changed when one young man causes havoc in his home town.   I enjoyed meeting the families, seeing how they lived their everyday lives and were normal people just like me and my family and friends.  They have issues, husbands who work too much, husbands who don’t pay attention to their families enough, and difficulty having a family just like the rest of the world.   What they end up experiencing will definitely rock their world and change their entire lives.

Stillwater Rising, the next book in this series, is due out later in 2014 and I cannot wait to get my hands on it.   This is a series that will tug at the readers heart and keep them wanting more.   I believe it will also be a series that will shine light on school violence and the changes that need to be made to keep children safe.   I will recommend this book.

**This is a novella and comes before Stillwater Rising and proceeds from this novella will be donated to KidsPeace.org to help stop school violence.

Kingston’s Project by Carrie Beckort

Published February 2014

How do you find the strength to embrace a future that’s different than the one you planned?

For Sarah Mitchell, the answer is simple—you don’t. For two years, Sarah has shut herself off from most of the world around her. She needs to move on, but doesn’t know how to begin.

Unexpectedly, Sarah is presented with an opportunity that could change everything. Elijah Kingston, her firm’s largest client, wants her to lead a highly confidential assignment. When Sarah learns the shocking nature of Kingston’s project, she is torn between Elijah’s promise of healing and her fear of falling deeper into despair.

My Thoughts…

An old man with a secret project, a grieving widow, and a trip across the country…I had no idea what to expect with Kingston’s Project.    I was extremely happy with how this story went.  It is a touching story with a “grandfather” figure taking special interest in a woman who has a lot of life to live.   It was an emotional story with lots of ups and many downs, but yet I could not put it down.

This is not an easy book to read.   It is a man, Elijah, who is trying to help a widow realize that her life is not over.   He has a reason to need her to help her, but this is not shared until later in the story.  There is so much that I would like to tell you, so many amazing things happen throughout the story, but to tell you means that I give away too much of the story.  I hate when a review gives away spoilers.

I can honestly tell you that this is a book that I will not forget.  I will recommend it to my friends and I wish my book club had read this with me.  I can only imagine the conversations we would have.   There are so many great and sad things happening in this book that I will happily recommend it to my friends.

Gone by Stacy Claflin

Macy Mercer only wants a little independence. Eager to prove herself grown up, she goes to a dark, secluded park. She’s supposed to meet the boy of her dreams who she met online. But the cute fifteen year old was a fantasy, his pictures fake. She finds herself face to face with Chester Woodran, a man capable of murder.

Distraught over his own missing daughter, Chester insists that Macy replace his lost girl. He withholds food, locks Macy up, and roughs her up, demanding that she call him dad. Under duress from his constant threats and mind games, her hold on reality starts to slip. Clinging to her memories is the only way of holding onto her true identity, not believing that she is Chester’s daughter.

My Thoughts….

I was iffy about accepting this book, raising two teenage daughters I was not sure if I could handle reading about Macy being kidnapped and her family and friends having to deal with it.    Stacy Claflin not only wrote about it in a tender and heart shattering way, but in a way that made it real.

I found myself relating to the parents and how they didn’t know how to proceed with their lives.   Every time the police called I held my breath hoping that they would have a clue that would lead to putting Macy back home.  Not knowing a lot about the family’s history, I enjoyed learning about them.  Learning how there was so much distance and unhappiness before Macy’s kidnapping, yet being able to pull together and support each other in this horrific time.  I know there is more coming about this family, but I have the definite feeling that this family will come out on top and closer than ever.

Macy is courageous.   Knowing that she put herself into this position and that she needs to remember her family and how they love her, she keeps strong and takes note of all the things around her trying to help herself escape.   She also is so smart.    She works hard to realize what will keep Chester from punishing her and keep herself as safe as possible.   I admire her for holding herself together and doing what she has to.

This is not an easy book.  It is a tough subject that Stacy Claflin handles with great care.  I am anxious for the next book in this series to be released.   Definitely pick this book up and read it.

The Gangster’s Kiss ( Love is a Dangerous Thing #1) by Ginger Ring

Published July 20, 2014 by Beau Coup Publishing

John O’Malley’s sister is missing. All the clues of her disappearance lead to Hayward County, Wisconsin and the crooks and questionable sheriff that reside there. Pretending to be one of them, John takes a job as bodyguard for the sheriff’s beautiful sister, Grace. It seems like the perfect way to investigate their crimes and corruption, but when someone threatens to kill Grace, the job proves harder than he thought. Is she an innocent witness to a crime, or just as guilty as everyone else?

Grace Sullivan just wanted a normal life: find a good man, get married and have a family. She has had enough of looking the other way while her brother hides behind his sheriff’s badge to conduct shady dealings. Hiring a gangster named John to watch her is the final straw. When a face from the past threatens her life, she is forced to put her life in John’s hands, but as time goes on, all she really wants is to be in the gangster’s arms.

My Thoughts…

This is a first for me… a 20’s gangster novel that I could not put down.    I love historical stories, but gangster books are not always my thing.    The Gangster’s Kiss is absolutely my thing.   I started the book, read the book in less than 24 hours, and could not stop thinking about it.    Writing this review I can still recall everything I love about the book and am trying to figure out how to share just enough with you, without giving away too much.

The characters of John and Grace were perfect.   I could easily relate to them and their story was so real.  I could feel the attraction between them, but I could also feel their reluctance to explore each other.  They knew that what they ultimately wanted could be put on the back burner if they got involved with each other and finally figured out how to work together to get their goals accomplished.

Daniel, Grace’s brother, was interesting to me.   While he should have been an upstanding citizen, he definitely was not.  It scared me that his lifestyle was a reflection on Grace.  The people he dealt with are not good people and I was sure they would do whatever they needed to to get the results they wanted.   While he was not necessarily a good guy, he really wasn’t a bad guy.  He did what he could to keep his sister safe, doing the best he could to keep her out of his lifestyle.

The Gangster’s Kiss is a book that I know I will be wanting more of.  I have quickly become a fan of Ginger Ring.    Do not wait.   Go get this book now.   You will not be sorry.

Excerpt
Her mood teeter-tottered back and forth like a seesaw. Unfortunately, now jealousy had raised its ugly head and her blood boiled for a fight. As she marched to the garage, Grace stomped her fancy shoes, making little puffs of dust with every step in the dirt. Tight fists swung back and forth with every step.
The wooden stairs to his room echoed her angry steps. Reaching his door, Grace gripped the doorknob and swung open the door. John stood half-naked, shaving in front of an old cracked mirror.
“Don’t believe in knocking, princess?” He never looked her way, just continued to shave. The straight blade scraped along his neck, one graceful swipe after another.
His concentration was obviously on the task at hand and not on her. “I didn’t want to startle you and have you slit your throat.” She crossed the room and sat on his bed. Shock that she’d burst into his room and was sitting on his bed briefly flashed into her mind. She dismissed it and tried to calm her racing pulse. Trying to appear relaxed, she rested her arm on the iron footboard. Overlapping her legs, she swung one long leg gracefully back and forth.
“So, you decided to just barge right in and that would be quieter?” He rinsed the blade in the sink full of water and surveyed his jaw once more in the mirror for spots he may have missed. “I’m not in the mood for games this morning, Grace.”
“Who said I wanted to play games?” Her chest puffed out.
“You tell me. I’m not the one who barged into your room.” John splashed his face and then patted it dry with a towel.
“My, you’re in a temper this morning.” The swinging of her shoe increased in speed.
“I’m not angry.” He reached for a comb and ran it through his hair. “Just tired.”
This was not going as planned. All the words that she wished to say were suddenly gone. Instead, she just blurted out the first thing that came to mind, “Well, I’m angry with you.”
“For what?” He turned and sat his backside against the sink, his arms folded over his chest.
“You left me alone last night.” She stood, walked to his side, and leaned a shoulder on the wall.
“Your brother was here.” John faced toward the mirror again and returned to combing his hair.
He was trying to ignore her, it would seem. Had he lost interest so fast?
“That’s not what I meant.” Her nose raised and her hand settled on her hip.
“And what do you mean?” John halted, tossed the comb on a shelf, and stepped closer. So close she could smell the clean scent of his soap. Her cheeks heated as she recalled that part of her dream. His chest was bare except for the springy dark curls that graced his chest before narrowing to a line that disappeared into his trousers. Her ears burned and she swallowed.
“I trusted you.” She settled deeper against the wall.
“Is that it? I passed another test on your list and now you are angry because I didn’t live up to your standards.”
How did he know she had a list? “Something like that.” Her lower lip stuck out and she stared at the floor.
“So what did I do to lose your trust?” John crossed his arms. A line creased his forehead.
“Daniel said you went to Roxie’s.” Grace peeked at his eyes before looking away. It never mattered that her father or brother had probably frequented there, but with John, it was a different story.
“Aye, and what has that got to do with trust?” His voice rose in anger now, which riled her even more.
“Why are you yelling?” She bit her lip to keep it from trembling.
“Because I’m tired, frustrated, and I don’t know what the hell you are doing here?”
“I can understand you being tired, but I thought that ‘kind of activity’ was supposed to ease a man’s,” she searched for the right word, “exasperations.”
He laughed and braced a hand on each side of her shoulders along the wall. “Is that what this is? You’re jealous.”
“I am not.” The tip of her chin rose. “I thought we had a business agreement.”
“Are you offering the same kind of business as they do at Roxie’s?” He leered at her chest and raised an eyebrow.
Her cheeks flamed. “Heavens, no. What kind of lady do you think I am?” The man was infuriating.
“I know what kind of lady I’d like you to be.” He wasn’t backing down.
“Be that as it may, I won’t waste my time on any man who doesn’t love me full time.” She narrowed her gaze. “Or one that spends his time in a whorehouse.”
“You think I spent the night between some woman’s thighs.” He stepped closer and the tip of his finger tapped her nose.
“Don’t be crude, John, and don’t be silly. Why, I should give two bits about whom you spend your time with.” But, she did care and it hurt like hell to think of him with someone else.
His right hand framed her jaw and his thumb slid across her lower lip. The rapid beat of her heart threatened to bring on the vapors.
“Oh, yeah,” he whispered.
Was that a question or a statement? She couldn’t decide.
“Yeah.” It was all she could manage to say before her eyelids lowered.
She jumped when his lips touched hers. His large frame pressed her smaller one against the wall. The kiss was forceful before gentling. Her knees weakened as he nipped her lips. When she kissed back, his tongue gained entrance. The kiss tasted sweet, like maple syrup. John’s arms reached around her back and held her close. Her breasts compressed against his chest. Her soft curves yielded to his hard length. Grace gasped for air when the kiss ended. His eyes shone darker than usual.
“I was there, princess, but the only pair of legs I want to be between belong to a woman who wasn’t there.”
The comment brought her crashing back to Earth. She reached an arm back to swing and he grabbed her hand before it could make contact with his face. “You’re nothing but a thug, John O’Malley.”
A smile crinkled little lines around his eyes. “Aye, but I’m your thug.” He enfolded her in a hug and swung her around. “I think you want a thug, Grace.” He released her and grinned. “A gentleman thug.”
“There is no such thing.” She placed her fists on her hips.
“Aye, there is and it is just what you need. A gentleman thug—that’s a man who will open the door and then slap your perfect arse as you pass.”
That kind of man did sound intriguing, but he didn’t need to know that. “Be that as it may, I still don’t know if I can trust you.” Her spine straightened and she gazed at an old picture of three horses in a storm hanging on the wall.
“Can I trust you, Grace?” he asked softly.

Romancing My Love by Melissa Foster

NEWLY RELEASED........
Book #9 The Bradens, Love in Bloom Series #18

After months of caring for her terminally ill mother, Rebecca Rivera is left all alone in a world she doesn’t trust—but she’s determined not to let her mother’s death define her. Losing her job, having to pummel some jerk for being too handsy, and living in her car are just temporary setbacks to an otherwise solid plan in finding her footing. Full of pride and used to being in control of her life, she’s certain she can make it on her own. The last thing Rebecca needs is a man to fix her troubles—even if that man is strikingly handsome, wealthy, and charismatic Pierce Braden.

Pierce is a powerful real estate investor on the verge of a major acquisition. As the eldest of six siblings raised by a single mother, he’s spent his life protecting those he loves. He’s used to being in charge and making things right, and although he’d give his life for his family, he treats the women he dates as expendable—until he meets sexy and stubborn Rebecca Rivera, a woman who is as strong as she is vulnerable.

Passion ignites between them, and the two share their most intimate thoughts and desires. It doesn’t take long for Pierce to realize that Rebecca is as determined not to be saved as he is to find a way into her heart. As their love grows, Rebecca must face fears she didn’t even realize she had—and Pierce must learn the hard truth that sometimes less really is more. Is the power of true love enough for Rebecca and Pierce to learn to give up control and allow their hearts to take over?

My Thoughts…

Whenever Melissa Foster starts writing about the Bradens I just sigh.     Every single one of the Braden men are steamy hot, respectful, and loving.  Pierce is no exception.  Not only is he incredibly rich, but he is modest.  He knows that he has money and can buy pretty much everything, but he does not brag or throw it in Rebecca’s face.    He wants to use it to make her life better, yet understands that she needs to be strong for herself.    The love he has for Rebecca shows what a great guy he truly is.  He is the type of guy every mom wants for her daughter and that every woman dreams of meeting.

Rebecca is strong; so incredibly strong that I was in awe of her.   Not only did she take care of her mom and give up her own life, she did so while dealing with not having any money and knowing that her mother would not live.    I loved how she turned Pierce down for his request for a date at first and then finally gave in after her pursued her a little longer.    I also loved how she knew she could open her heart to him and let him into her life and her heart.   She shared things with him that she had never shared before and knew that he would treasure her secrets and keep them safe.

Everyone dreams of finding a love like Rebecca and Pierce.   Romancing My Love is the perfect story to open your heart and let true love in.   Of course, I recommend this entire series and this book to every romance lover.

THE BRADEN COUSINS are the newest addition to the LOVE IN BLOOM series, this is the third of six books.

Waking up Joy by Tina Ann Forkner

Publication Date:  October 8, 2014 by Tule Publishing Group

When adored town spinster Joy Talley ends up in a coma after a peculiar accident, she is surprised and incensed to hear what is being said in her hospital room, including plans for her funeral. When she finally wakes, her well-‐meaning, but bossy, brothers and sisters dismiss her claims, thinking her accident has knocked her off her rocker, but Joy has never felt better, and is determined to set the past right.

Now Joy must face her darkest secret and risk reopening wounds caused by an old flame who rejected her more than twenty years ago. But taking risks brings change, as well as a new, younger man into Joy’s life, making her feel like a teenager again. Suddenly Joy’s once humdrum life is anything but boring and routine and the future beckons, exhilarating and bright.

My Thoughts…

You always hear that when a person is in a coma they can still hear you talk.  Joy is proof that this is true, at least in her case.    It seemed like Joy was able to eaves drop on her family.   It was interesting to hear what her family and friends said about her and her life when they thought she could not hear them.   I loved that when Joy “woke up” from the coma she called them out on what they said.   It was sad that some of them denied it and thought she was crazy, when they should have been honest and supported her.

The relationships between Joy and her family and Joy and Doc and Jimmy were incredible.   The sparks between Joy and Doc and Jimmy were steamy, yet understandable.   A cute younger doctor showing interest in a 40 something woman after meeting her crazy family would make anyone blush.    The history between Jimmy and Joy was mixed and definitely needed some figuring out, but the sparks and attraction were obvious from the beginning.    The relationship with her family was interesting.   There were times I wish she would have told her family to leave her alone, but I was glad that they were there to support her in their mixed up way.

Waking Up Joy is not a book for everyone.  It is a book for a chic-lit reader and someone looking for a heart tugging story.    I enjoyed this book and certainly can recommend it to my friends.

My Thoughts…

I love when a friend (Jessie Lane) recommends a book to me.   It is always a winner.   The Gifted Series is no exception.

There is so much that I loved about this entire series.   Erin Manbeck managed to write these books with great detail to description and detail.  Each book is steady in the telling of the story, yet moved at a pace that kept me entirely hooked.   I finished the first one, started the second, finished the second, and started the third.  Now I am done with book three and am curious to see what could be happening next.   As I read about Oaky, the tree in her backyard, I could picture the tree and how it protected her when she needed it most.   I could picture the safe cottage that Regan and Jake, her man, returned to.  I could feel Gram’s love and protection.  It has been quite a while since I have found a series of book that I could not wait to read the next book, knowing that they were only going to get better and better.

Each book in this series continued the story of Regan and her discovery of what her life was destine to be.  The paranormal aspects of this story were my absolute favorite parts, but the fact that she falls in love with her soul mate and then stands strong made it very real to me.   Whenever Regan started to stumble in her life, I knew Jake would be there to pick her and set her straight again.   Their relationship went beyond their paranormal lives and was what a “normal” person should always aim for and want.

I will definitely recommend this series to my friends who love the paranormal and will be looking for more from Erin Manbeck.

The Silent Sister by Diane Chamberlain

Expected publication: October 7th 2014 by St. Martin's Press

In The Silent Sister, Riley MacPherson has spent her entire life believing that her older sister Lisa committed suicide as a teenager.  Now, over twenty years later, her father has passed away and she's in New Bern, North Carolina cleaning out his house when she finds evidence to the contrary.  Lisa is alive.  Alive and living under a new identity.  But why exactly was she on the run all those years ago, and what secrets are being kept now?  As Riley works to uncover the truth, her discoveries will put into question everything she thought she knew about her family.  Riley must decide what the past means for her present, and what she will do with her newfound reality, in this engrossing mystery from international bestselling author Diane Chamberlain.

My Thoughts…

This is going to be a hard review to right, only because I don’t want to give away everything yet I want to make sure that everyone who reads my review purchases this book.    This is the one book I would recommend everyone read, the book of my year.   The Silent Sister is a mystery story, but it is a strong heart tugging story.   Told from the youngest child in the MacPherson family point of view, this story will show how everything you ever thought to be true could be wrong.

Riley was only two when when Lisa committed suicide.   She didn’t even remember her sister.   What she does know is that it tore her whole family apart.   I love that Riley follows her heart, even when she is afraid of where it is heading.   She learns more than she ever wanted to know, yet manages to stay strong and follow the leads wherever they will leave.

Diane Chamberlain’s amazing writing has left me wanting more.   I know that she is an author that I will never hesitate to read.   This is my first book by her and she has proven herself without a doubt to be an author I will read more of.

Spring Shadows (Season of Love #3) by Jennifer Gracen

Publication: October 1st 2014 by Booktrope Editions

In SPRING SHADOWS, Book Three of the series, author Jennifer Gracen brings Lydia and Sam one step closer to lasting happiness. But it isn’t all romance and roses. The realities of a long distance relationship held between Chicago and New York start to take a toll. Add in the complications posed by Sam’s overprotective brother, Lydia’s difficult ex-husband, and an unexpected tragedy, and it all threatens to tear them apart before they’ve even begun to truly be together.

Lydia and Sam must face their pasts and come to terms with old fears and insecurities. They need to focus on the things that really matter: true love, forgiveness, compassion, and fearless commitment--another leap of faith. Full of the sweetness and heartfelt emotion you’ve come to expect from the Seasons of Love series, SPRING SHADOWS shows us the power of purposeful communication, understanding, and unrelenting self-awareness, proving that true, lasting love is possible when nurtured by healing and hope.

My Thoughts…

Having read the other two books in this series I had no doubt that when Spring Shadows became available I would pick it up immediately.  Fortunately I was able to get my hands on it before it actually was released and I cannot be more thrilled with how the story between Lydia and Sam continued.   This is definitely my favorite so far.

This book is steamier, edgier, and sweeter than the first two in this series.   Sam is still amazing, showing his love and devotion to Lydia at every turn.  He has a lot more patience than most guys would when dealing with a new relationship, but understands that Lydia is everything that he has ever wanted.    But in this book he speaks his mind more often and stands his ground instead of giving in to Lydia’s whims.    Lydia is determined to make her relationship with Sam work, but is still standing in her own way.   She has doubts, understandably, that she has to work through.    She has a son that comes first in her life, as he should.    Once she starts to realize that she has to let go of some things in her life, she finds that her life straightens out and she realizes what is important to her.

With Spring Shadows the reader has to be ready for a wild ride of emotions and fun.   There is heartache, lose, love, and fights.   I cannot wait for their story to continue in the next book.

Here are the first two books in this series, all of which I highly recommend....
