My heart is a broken mess and I’m not sure how to fix it. I think Brax wants to be the one to help fix me, but I don’t know whether to give myself to someone again. I can’t risk it - I just can't. It will end up destroying me, of that I am sure.

Brax
She is broken and keeps on pushing me away, soon she will realize I am the one who will mend her heart, and no one will love her like I will, I am it for her. Together, she will fix us both.
I let her walk away once, that’s not going to happen again.

I think I have put a bit of myself in both….Krinos tends to say things without thinking, I do the same. She also rules the roost, and I do the same in my household.” Her celebrity crush is Chris Hemsworth, she loves chocolate ice cream, her biggest pet peeve is nails on a chalkboard., and she is not a fan of having her photo taken. She loves being part of the Indie Book world, and has made some amazing friends along the way. excerptIt hurts too much, way too much. I don’t know how to rid myself of this stabbing pain in my heart. He left, he just left me. It may not have been his choice, but that doesn’t mean anything. It still hurts all the same. I lay in his bed, not moving, not eating. Hell, trying not to even think. I just sleep. Doctor January by Rhoda Baxter

Published July 2, 2014 by Choc Lit

If you keep looking back, you might miss what’s standing right in front of you …

Six months after a painful break-up from Gordon, Beth’s finally getting her life back on track. She has faith in her own scientific theories and is willing to work hard to prove them. She’s even beginning to see Hibs, her dedicated lab partner, as more than just a lousy lothario in a lab-coat and goggles.

So when Gordon arrives back from America without warning and expects to be welcomed back into Beth’s arms, she’s totally thrown. She also quickly begins to see that Gordon isn’t the man she thought he was … Hibs has always held a candle for Beth, but he can only wait so long for her to realise there’s more to life than being patronised and bullied by the one who’s meant to love and protect her.

My Thoughts….

I’m not sure whether to call this a love story or a story with a life lesson to be learned.    While there is romance, I felt it was more about the mental and eventual physical abuse that a boyfriend, in this case, was causing his girlfriend.  ( Yes I know it can go the other way, girlfriend to boyfriend.)

I hated Gordon.  From before he was back in Beth’s life I could tell her was nothing but trouble.    When he finally returned my opinion did not change.  It is scary that there are many real people who are like him and have the control that he has over Beth.    I found it eye opening to myself to see all the different ways a person can lead another person to do what they want without coming out and saying it directly.

I was also sad for Beth.   She had a great life ahead of her, but could not see what was before her own eyes and break out of the deadly and serious path she was heading down.    Beth was incredibly lucky that she had great friends that kept an eye out for her and tried to warn her of what her future will hold.
Hibs, aka Dr. January, is amazing.   Not only does he support her at work, while her boss pulls her down, he supports her in her personal life.   His feelings for her are extremely obvious, but he manages to keep them in check to do what is best for Beth.

The only down part of this book was all the science.  Science is not my subject of knowledge so I found that I was sometimes lost in the scientific dialogue being held.

I will recommend this book.

Fat Girl by Leigh Carron

Years after fleeing small-town Springvale, Illinois, Deanna Chase has picked up the pieces of her shattered heart and built a new life for herself as a child advocacy lawyer. Her food addiction is quasi under control, her secrets are buried, and she has even made a tenuous peace with her plus-size body. Until…

Micah Peters—the very sexy and now famous man she fled— walks through her office door and sends Dee reeling. His demand that she help a young boy caught in a custody battle will reunite her with the past she left behind. Torn between duty and self-preservation, Dee isn’t easy to convince.

But when obligation wins, the former lovers get more than they bargained for—a searing passion that burns hotter than ever and startling revelations about what really happened the fateful night she left

My Thoughts…

Fat Girl wasn’t what I expected.   It isn’t about a “fat” girl who lives a “fat” girl life.   It is about Deanna Chase, who lives the life beating herself up about everything.   She is heavier than she thinks is socially acceptable, she lived a life in foster care never finding the family she thought she wanted, and that everyone who she ever loves will end up leaving her.    Although this wasn’t a really heavy story to read it was not a light and easy one either.   I struggled with all of Deanna’s lack of self esteem.   She had the life she wanted and didn’t know how to accept that it could be her forever.

Micah, Mick, is amazing.   I was able to see him with his character flaws, his anger and how he reacts to what he can’t control, but truly he had a lot of patience and understanding for Deanna.   Not only was he hot and sexy with eyes only for his true love, he knew how to build her up and make her a better person.  Together Mick and Deanna can rule their world and keep each other in check and live happily ever after.

Fat Girl is a book I would definitely recommend to my friends.   I am not sure I would want YA to read it, as there are heavier topics covered.

Pulled Within by Marni Mann

Bar Harbor #2
Publish Date of Septemer 12, 2014 by Booktrope Editions

Storms can't last forever…can they?

For five long years, Rae Ryan has lived in a storm over which she has no control. Little by little, everything has been taken away from her—her job, her relationship, her best friend and her home. Plagued by nightmares and a terrible family secret, she carries her scars as much on the inside as she does on the outside.

Hart Booker, another disappointment from her past, returns to Bar Harbor and shelters her from the rain. He reminds Rae that forgiveness is possible, happiness can be found on the other side of darkness, and beauty rests beneath her scars. But a sinister figure lingering in the background seems determined to pull Rae back into a past she’s been trying to outrun. Can she survive the storm and become part of the light she so desperately desires? Or is she destined to remain Pulled Within?

My Thoughts…

I read the first book in the Bar Harbor series and was extremely anxious for the second one to come out.    But, with almost any series, you never know if the following books with hold true to the first books.    Pulled Within not only lives up to Pulled Beneath, it surpasses it.   I could not put it down.   Rae tugged at my heart and won me over.   I had to know what was causing her night mares and what had happen to her brother.   Her happy ending was a must happen for me to be happy.

Pulled Within is raw and full of emotion.  I had tears, I smiled, and I even giggled a little.   I am not sure that a book has ever hit me with so many emotions and then left me wanting so much more in all my years of reading.  Marni Mann is absolutely amazing.   This series is definitely at the top of my recommend list and my must read list.     Anyone who misses these books will be sorry and will be missing out on some great reading.

I do have to mention that this is definitely an adult book.  There is explicit language, sexual abuse, drug use, and disturbing situations.

When You Make it Home by Claire Ashby

Published July 2014 by Red Adept Publishing

Meg Michaels, a bookstore owner, has already walked away from two cheating exes. She’s learned her lesson and has her mind set on success—until she gets knocked up. Embarrassed and unwilling to discuss her situation with friends and family, she wears layers to hide the pregnancy.

When Meg gets sick at a party, she’s mortified. Even worse, Theo Taylor, the guest of honor, discovers her secret. Theo, an Army medic wounded in the war, agrees not to reveal her condition, and the two forge a bond of friendship that blossoms into love.

Theo is soon filling all of Meg’s late-night cravings—and not just the pregnancy-induced ones. But can their love overcome all the obstacles that stand between them and creating a happy family?

My Thoughts…

When You Make It Home is an eye opening story that tugs are your heart strings.   I cried, sighed, shook my head, and said prayers for Meg and Theo.   The emotions were unlimited and changed many times throughout the story.

Theo is my hero.  Not only is he a wounded veteran coming home injured and fighting his own demons, but he steps up to the plate to be friends with a pregnant woman.   He scared me when he kept having to take pills to fight the phantom pain and refused to share his pain with Meg, I was worried for the path that he could be heading down and what it would mean for his relationships.   But when he starts referring to Meg’s baby as his own and taking care of both mother and baby without batting an eye I knew that he would come out on top and be the true man he was meant to be.

Meg was interesting to me.   A single mom, without a real mother figure in her life, who falls for a wounded veteran.   There were times that I wanted to shake her and say wake up, don’t let Theo leave you.   There were other times that I was hoping that she would take a step back and let someone else take care of her.   She was so incredibly independent, due to her circumstances, that she did not know how to let someone else into her life.   I didn’t always like her, but I did always want her to find her happy ever after.

I enjoyed reading Claire Ashby’s story.   I will definitely recommend this to my fellow romance readers.

Harbor Island by Carla Neggers

Harbor Island by Carla Neggers
Sharpe & Donavon #4

Emma Sharpe, former nun and granddaughter of world-renowned art detective Wendell Sharpe, is a handpicked member of a small Boston-based FBI team. For the past decade Emma and her grandfather have been trailing an elusive serial art thief. The first heist was in Ireland, where an ancient Celtic cross was stolen. Now the Sharpes receive a replica of the cross after every new theft—reminding them of their continued failure to capture their prey.

When Emma receives a message that leads her to the body of a woman on a frozen island in Boston Harbor, she finds the victim holding a small, cross-inscribed stone—one she recognizes all too well. Emma's fiancé, FBI deep-cover agent Colin Donovan, is troubled that she's gone off to the island alone, especially given the deadly turn the thief has taken. But as they dig deeper they are certain there is more to this murder than meets the eye.

As the danger escalates, Emma and Colin must also face do-or-die questions about their relationship. While there's no doubt they are in love, can they give their hearts and souls to their work and have anything left for each other? There's one thing Emma and Colin definitely agree on: before they can focus on their future, they must outwit one of the smartest, most ruthless killers they've ever encountered.

My Thoughts…

I have not read any of the other books in this series and feel that by not reading them I missed parts of this story.   There was background that I did not have and felt I needed, there were characters that I was not familiar with and if I had read the other books I would have been more familiar with them.   With that being shared, I really enjoyed Harbor Island.

Finding a good mystery book is always a plus for me.    I love a book that keeps me guessing and not giving away too much at a time.   Harbor Island did this to me.   I had guesses, which were usually wrong, and kept changing who I thought the thief and murderer was.  This kept me intrigued and reading, not able to put it down.

One of the huge plusses of this book is the locations.   The beautiful setting of Ireland and then back to Maine and Boston were where most of the story is taken place.  I could picture the quaint inns and the fancy hotels the various characters stayed and visited.  I could see the island where the cottages were located at.    When a scene plays in my mind as I read, I know that it is a book that I will not soon forget.

If you are looking for a great mystery with a great setting, Harbor Island is the perfect book for you.  I recommend it.

I'm Still Here by Kathryn R. Biel

Published September 2, 2014 by Kathryn Biel

It started out as an ordinary day for Esther Comely-Cox, if you consider simultaneously totaling your car, smashing a Ho Ho in your face and meeting a handsome doctor ordinary.

Estranged from her family over her sister's mental illness and death, Esther can't help but feel alone. And when Esther hears the voice of her twin sister who committed suicide seven years ago, she begins to question her own sanity, leading her to wonder if anything is what it seems. Searching for answers, Esther must confront her past while looking towards a new future—one in which she is finally accepted.

Through humor and heartbreak, Esther learns that blood does not mean family, that absence does not make the heart grow fonder and that silence can speak volumes.

My Thoughts…

While the romance in I’m Still Here was entertaining, I found this to be a truly heartbreaking story.   It is the story of a woman who is estranged from her whole family and blamed for her twin sister’s disappearance or suicide (depending on who you talk to).    Her sisters, brothers, and parents all blame her and refuse to have a relationship with her.

I loved Esther.  She is one of the strongest characters I have met.   I wanted to be her sister, co worker, and friend.    She managed to stand up for what she believed in, even when it went against what others thought.   I also loved her klutziness.  I have always said that I can trip of nothing at all, so I felt a kindred spiritness to her.  As the story goes on, I learned more and more about her and respected her more and more.    When she meets O.K. and he treats her how she has always wanted to be treated I was hoping that it would make her that much stronger.

Kathryn Biel is an author I have read whenever she has anything new come out and I have not been let down yet.   I am always anxious to get my hands on whatever she has going on.     She is someone I recommend checking out.
